I am a Hindu Pakhtoon from the Karlani tribe, actually majority Hindu pakhtoons are from Kakari and Karlani tribes, in my opinion. We have actually lived with our Muslim brethern, our elders believe that we are pakhtoons who refused to convert to Islam during Ghaznavi time( i think Islam is older in the Pashto areas, kpk etc, but its our belief). The confusion arises when these people called Hindkowans and Potoharis( i am talking of those who stayed Hindu) lived in Afghanistan and kpk as well. We Hindu pakhtoons look very different from these Hindu people, similar to Iranic people. Our stature is tall with pale skin, people generally confuse our brethern as muslim pathans but we are not. These Hindus lived with us in muslim-ruled Afghanistan for centuries, but we seldom married them. Although i don't speak Pukhtoo fluently( my parents and forefathers still can fluently), i can speak the Karlani dialect, Hindi/Urdu, Gujrati, Kannada, Turkish( from dramas). Some facets about our culture which we share with muslim Pakhtoons is Pashtunwali, tatooing, Attan etc, we used to do Khaie before the 19th century AD, but now we don't. Differences are obviously religion and literature, one khattak Muslim writer is admired much( i don't remember his name), apart from that, we have our own version of Shahnamah, Shirin-Forhadi etc. Our ancestors wrote Pukhtoo in perso-Arabic script and Landeh script( a variant of Kashmiri script), we call Hindu bhajans as wanuns. Also, we mainly worship a form of Durga( we call her Anasti/Anahti) but she looks very different from a typical Hindu goddess( she has traditional Afghan jewelry, wears pachkan dress with a decorative cap and veil as hair is covered, she holds a shield and spear and sits on a buck). She is the goddess of passion, heart/liver and creation.

Pashto language is now one of the most spoken languages of the world. Furthermore the impression that pakhtuns are all Muslims only has also proved wrong as there are Sikhs and Hindus who are pakhtuns by origin and ethnicity. I am v grateful to the organisers of this get together. I am not sure about the existence of ethnic Pashtun Sikh community but no one can disprove the existence of our Hindu brethren. The Sikh that live amongst us are culturally and linguistically Pashtun but by ethnicity, they are probably non Pashtuns. But anyhow they are well integrated with the larger Pashtun nation.

Mexicans for instance are now Americans bcs of naturalization. These non Muslim pakhtuns especially Sikhs hv been living here since 400 years and more . So they are as good pakhtuns as we are. 1965 when I was 10 years old, one winter night my mother told us the story of Pashtun Hindus, when she was hardly 10 years old (probably 1944) and visited Mekhtar with her father Sardar Sher Ali Khan Kakar to settle a dispute among them. She was respected and taken much care of as she was the daughter of a Kakar Chief. She told there was no difference in their language, dress, foods, songs, Attan dance and looked exactly as other Pashtuns. The only difference she noted was some utensils were yellow colored. In 1947 they were compelled by the officials to leave. They were crying and singing Pashto songs for their beloved homeland.

@@kkacharles3797 Paktian/Pakhtuns were Hindu, Zoroastrian and Buddhist. They are original inhabitants of eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, where all three religions were fluid. All three are Aryan religions. And Pakhtuns are a mixed Aryan descendant group. The artifacts and temples found in these areas, make it quite clear. It is only after Arabian defeat of Iran, that Afghanistan was then colonized.

They are not Pashtuns. They are Indians who had migrated to Afghanistan for business and trade and then started living there until parition of India, some even left during the War in Afghanistan. They are just Pashto speaking Indians, not ethnic Pashtuns. Same way speaking English doesn't make me British, speaking Pashto doesn't make one Pashtun, your blood matters. Pashtuns were not Hindus even before Islam, they were majority Zoroastrian and a minority were Buddhists.
