So I guess I've been overthinking the lessons. I just got hired and have been looking around to see where I upload a class slideshow, but it looks like the students mostly bring their work that they need help with to the class? There's not much logistical information out there for how this whole thing works. Thank you for the video!

Hi I am very new first day!! does the student upload the work or share a screen so you can prepare for what they need help with? Any newbie advice? I have a parent who wants to review expectations? Do we do that on the first call or a separate time at no charge?

@@Modeltammeracarter23 I usually do that on the first session or when I send the welcome message upon match, I’ll ask them to send me an email. A short call could accomplish the same. It’s really good to get a feel for what the student needs so no one is wasting their time! 😊

Hi, I work for Varsity Tutors as well! And so far I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the company and the process, but I’m fairly new. Do you have any tips for the material you use with students, or how you create your lessons?

I'm not sure what types of classes you are tutoring, but for me I'm almost always just going over the assigned problems the student already has in their possession. Especially for instant tutoring, you do not need to provide any external resources. Using a public library could be a good idea though, since many online teaching resources require a payment!

Hi! My first class starts in a few days and I was sent a zoom link by email for the class but it also says that the session link is shown 24 hours before. Would that mean that I would teach on Zoom or on the varsity tutors platform?

I've never been sent a zoom link, but I've also never taught full classes. I've always only used the links on the platform with 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. To be using the platform makes more sense because when you end a session, you immediately have the option to invoice your hours. I don't know how you would be paid via zoom.

Idk how relevant this is for you today but they asked me what my teaching philosophy is and what would make me a good tutor. They also ask for you to make a 10min mini lesson and it can virtually be about anything pertaining the subject you want to teach.

What is the maximum amount of weekly hours you can work?? I have a friend who started working for Varsity in August, and she is trying to work at least 15 hours a week, but she's not getting that many students and there have been days that she doesn't get any students to tutor. She's been doing mostly instant tutoring because most of the scheduled tutoring opportunities that she gets, end up going to other tutors.

@@meganparker3319 well it seems that Varsity is over hiring tutors because my friend is not getting enough hours. Almost all of the scheduled tutoring opportunities that she gets ends up going to other tutors and even with instant tutoring, she gets turned down often. The interesting part is that she always gets good feedback from the students whenever she does get to tutor students.

@@sylonisupport68 Well I think that its highly dependent on the subject. For certain subjects I tutor, like calculus and linear algebra I see at least 10 new opportunities a day with surge pricing, not including the instant opportunities. I often see emails from VT saying there especially in need of additional calculus, ACT, SAT, and statistics tutors. For other subjects, I see a lot fewer opportunities.

For K-12 private tutoring, yes. For standardized testing or group classes, it goes up to $18-$21 I believe.
