Excellent point. Don’t want a bassist to tell a guitar player which chords to play. Had that experience one time where a guitar player played a dominant 7 against a major 7 chord and had to explain he had it wrong 😆

Thanks Dan! I certainly like the details in the way you demonstrated how chords can be played. The order of playing the notes with your right hand was helpful too. Showing how to barre notes on bass is something I rarely see and glad you covered it. I had problems barring on guitar years ago, I find barring on bass seems easier for me.

Within the last year or so I have just started to learn some music theory. That has been the game changer in helping to play and understand how to make music using music theory. But I struggled to understand chords on bass, how they work, how to create those great sounds a bass can make playing chords. And like that this one video took the mystery out playin chords for me. After watching this video now I am creating and playing my own basslines based off of the notes in chords. Thank you so much Mr. Hawkins!!!!!

The absolute best way to explain what music theory is in my personal opinion is that music theory puts sound into a a way to see the frequency. Understanding chord structure made learning the fretboard so much easier. Everything in this world is built from patterns. Know the patterns and you will never find that last note lol.

I use a lot of faux power chords, and a few of these chords with the third or minor third and a fifth on many songs, it helps fill in for sound with our 3-piece band. For Knockin' on Heaven's Door I play a lot of these chords while the guitar takes a solo (plus I sing it.) I also use a ton of just octave grace notes. I also liked hearing you doing the hammer-on with both the vocal mic and amp recording; when playing them I hear the other half of the string sounding, but of course not get to the pickup and amp. A lot of folks must not capture the other half of the string, but it's quite normal to hear those odd tones when playing.

I would love to get a grate R&B Singer to sing beautifully to some bass chords at the intro of a song. And plus she could sing a small part of a melody while the bass plays it with vibrato just like the singer. Normally you would expect a keyboard player to do that, as well as a guitar player. But to me, I think it would be very special to have a bass player doing that.

Great stuff as always Dan. Could you do a lesson on how to determine what notes to play when at a non-diatonic chord? We know we can play the 7 notes from the mode when on a chord that is in the key and we can play the chord tones when on a non-diatonic chord. What if the music is on a non-diatonic chord and we want to expand beyond the chord tones, is there a method we can use other than trial and error?

For all the music I’m improvising on the spot?? Do you really think I have that much time in the day to TAB that out for you as well as create these free lessons and free PDFs?? I honestly think you have no clue what goes into making these lessons. Sorry for the rant - I don’t mean to be negative. You’ll grow as a musician if you do some of this work yourself - ESPECIALLY working things out by ear. Takes some practice but it will transform your playing.

@@doughdog7I understand your situation my friend. Tabs are nice when you're learning but tabs will destroy your long term abilities. The absolute best practice is ear training to hear the notes and play by ear. Remember that the creator of this channel makes these lessons for free so to tell someone who has been playing for decades and gives free lessons is no different than staring a gift horse in the mouth. There are many things I wish would be taught or shown but I know my place also. You have to be able to step out of body in life and enter other people's shoes to have empathy and understand their situation. If I could give you any advice it would be to get your technique rock solid. Get the scales and modes down and learn no music just pure discipline and when you have the technical aspects down you will hear something and play it with ease. I had to undo many years of playing and go back to the beginning all because I didn't focus on technique first time around. Now I am an old man who is fighting arthritis and many other ailments that make what I should already know harder to learn. Now I have technique and look back at how horrible of a bass player I was for many years thinking I was good.

You can be shorter and clearer, those who understand will understand, those who don't understand won't understand anyway.

10th? ahahahahah it's always referred to as a 3rd and never a 10th. It doesnt matter what interval you play the 3rd, it's still a 3rd.

@@OnlineBassCourses It is true. NO one has ever referred to a CHORD TONE as a 10th! It is the 3rd of the chord no matter where you play it!

@@cgrimes72 Ah... You didn't quite say that in your original comment. I thought you were referring to intervals.

@@OnlineBassCourses Why would you think that? The video clearly shows you making chords, and talking about chords, and the title is chords on the bass. Then you are referring to 10ths as you make the chord shapes. All I am saying is that when talking about chords, one never says 10ths. It's always 3rd. As far as intervals go, why would u think the discussion was about intervals? The video is clearly talking about chords! And anything outside of a THEORY CLASSS talking about intervals, one should be thinking PERFORMANCE and PERFORMANCE is dealing with chords! and actual playing and NOT THEORY.

I get so many comments that it’s quite difficult sometimes to know exactly what people are referring to (and to remember the video itself let alone the specific section!). When talking about how to voice a chord, you absolutely can say ‘this is a 10th’. Chords are made up of intervals so they’re integral to the discussion. Adding a 3rd or a 10th into a chord does matter. It’s a subtle difference but an important one. Most professional musicians will describe it this way so it’s not wrong. If you want to describe it a different way that’s absolutely fine by me. Do what works for you! Thanks for the comment, Chad! 👍🙏

This kind of playing is totally unusable in music, in band. This is only poor playing on stand alone bass without any company. Just you are doing this wrong

I think I actually mention that in the video but I doubt you made it that far. Thanks for the comment though. You can absolutely play like this if you want. It’s great for composing, having fun, learning about harmony, and a whole host of other things. 🙏👍
