a “secret” for any newbie bass players: if you start studying by transcribing a bass line through a patterns/shapes system (and not through a pentagram or a tab system) you will find out that the entire bass line of a track (especially in funk music) is simply a patterns/shapes sequence, so you don’t need to know the music theory/notes/scales to play a bass (you need to know music theory to know what you are playing of course…)

I got away with just using shapes for longer than I care to admit. I don't have a photographic memory so it was a while before I figured out a way to visualize the actual notes on the fretboard.

Yeah but then you aren't actually learning to play, you're just memorizing this one particular song. I have songs memorized on Piano, but I don't know how to play piano. If break down the theory of a song you'll understand song as you learn what chords are actually being outlined in each bar, how the song was written, the chord progression of the song, and neat little relationships between intervals. For instance, just last night I learned that a 1 - minor 6 relationship is a major 3rd if you play it backwards

A thought I had during the part of this video where you're showing how to use octaves is that it's pretty easy to find a dominant 7th from an octave. It's just two frets lower. Getting comfortable with that idea makes it easy to understand your scale backwards, by starting at the octave.

Excellent easy to play and useful patterns ! That high octave makes a good quick contrasting sound. Very nice. I am using visual diagonal patterns to find notes. For example, the octave of any note is down three strings diagonally. From the G string, the octave is up diagonally 4 strings. Makes finding them easy.

People are always happy with my bass playing as long as i hit the 1 and feature the key so the singer is comfortable. Yeah - the 6th - get some side eye sometimes, or a raised eyebrow and nod - that lets me know guitarist and/or vox have some jazz or such in their bag

You are not going too fast at all Dude, as you said, press pause as you cannot just sit there for 10 minutes for people to play it out; Plus you also have play speed control on KZbin. Again a Great instructional video. That's beautiful, I like the line of "Crazy little thing called love" by QUEEN, played on D scale A string. I like that sweet move of tones up to be repeated again on G scale on D string. On a 5 string do you like 34 scale or a 35 scale. People make a mistake on getting a 34 scale thinking it plays the same as a 35 scale. Whats your choice of scale on a 5 string?

If you will play in drop A or A standard in a professional way, 35" is a no brainer. For standard tuning 34" can work, Warwick and MM have a good B string at 34", so do many customs. I had one 35" bass, it takes time to get used to it and it can be a bit difficult to play on frets 1-4, but it's easier to play higher up.

it’s very simple: I choose a bass, and I have the scale that that bass has…you can be sure that I will NOT choose a bass model depending on the scale lenght (for example, I have a 5 strings Stingray with normal 34 scale and it’s amazing)

@@luigi.zanini As I've wrote up, if you're playing downtuned, scale length is very important. Fanned fret and 35" basses are popular in metal for a reason. I wanted to play Cradle of Filth on my Sire V7V 5 string and it sounded like garbage, A string wasn't defined.

Personally, I have one 34 (MusicMan StingRay 5) and one 34.5. I like them both and don’t really bother thinking too deeply about that stuff. If it sounds good and feels good to me, I’m in!

Work out your budget and then I’d recommend going to a shop so that you can see and feel the bass. Bottom line is there are amazing cheap choices these days! Don’t overthink it but do make sure the bass is set up well. Anything will be fine if that’s the case.
