Thankyou for that advice I have only been playing for 10months and I am 85years old and although I have progressed I don't seem able to increase my speed and dexterity what you have just said is inspirational

Great advice. I heard a professional cellist on the radio once discussing practice routines. She said she never did anything more than three times. She thought that was the optimal way to use time. Do it three times and move on to something else. Come back to it tomorrow.

I can see the logic in that for sure. Personally, I do a little more than that but I'm definitely one to take breaks, let things process and come back a little while later. There's a lot that modern musicians could learn from how classical musicians play and practice! Thanks for your comment.

Setting "Process Goals" vs. "Outcome Goals" and then trusting the process.

I've tried to split my practice into different areas. Scales and Arps, ear and transcribing, learning songs, reading from method books . The trick for me is to do 20 minute sessions doing only one thing from my categories. For example broken 3rds over each mode in a key. I try to do all keys but if I don't I'm done after 20 minutes. I then stop, log it and break. The break can either be 5 minutes or the rest of the day. I can do as many 20 minutes as I like in a day, but always do at least one.

This is a really great technique. Focussed and methodical. It's a great way to structure what you're doing! Let me know how it's working for you and thanks for commenting!
