It's also work comparing and contrasting the [subtle?] differences in the different steps between the particular sea kayak approaches shown here and some of the river/playboat kayak videos. Such as the letting the boat stabilise (~8:00) so that the roll has separated phases, whereas some have a smooth progression (~using the rotation momentum). And also how the improver should spot them and utilise them. (swept roll vs brace roll; fore-deck v sback-deck finish position; out of sequence deliberate pool practice; etc.)

Thank you SO much for this video. Throughout my learning process, by FAR the most common observation I've heard is I' was picking my head up too soon. I often thought I was sometimes doing that because I realized my roll wasn't working in the first place. I tended to dismiss those doubts in deference to much more experienced and skilled paddlers observing me, so it's good to hear my doubts validated. I think the bottom line is that being a skilled paddler is a necessary but not sufficient condition for being a good teacher. I think this happens because the head lift, being the part of the roll that occurs above water, is just the easiest to see. As they say, correlation does not equal causation!

You're very welcome! I'm really glad the video resonated with you. You're absolutely right-sometimes the most visible part of a movement isn't necessarily the root cause of the issue. It's great that you've taken the time to question and analyze your roll rather than just accepting feedback at face value. Being able to break down techniques and truly understand what's happening beneath the surface is key to both improving as a paddler and becoming a better coach. Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🚣♂️💪

A good detailed vid. However…These are rolls with set up before going over. I’ve tried going over without set up. The issue then is that in trying to move the paddle into the correct position, the initial submerged ”wrong” position, and moving it into the right position is hampered by the resistant water itself, which does unhelpful things to the blade. Especially if it is a wooden Greenland paddle that immediately tries to float (surprisingly strongly!) and messes you about, but also when the wide Europe blade brings its own resistance into the mix. Maybe a vid and words about sorting out the surprise capsize?

Simon could roll even with a vertical paddle... he’s a good actor 😂

Actually good video, not one of those that sprinkle in some bits and then invite you to buy their video course. Thank you, in the name of all sea kayakers!
