My first thought was... "Why spend that much, just go buy a Kramer Barretta Special for 199.00" But then Max started to point out the brass appointments and the big brass block. With those appointments, you're actually getting a better deal to buy the Slick guitar, and the ash body with that finish is just killer.

The sand blasted finish is more appealing on the slick guitar, but I would go for a Jackson js22 for a 180 bucks brand new.

I can't express this enough, check their clearance section for blemished guitars. Some have very unnoticeable issues. I got a LP style from them with a finish crack by the neck that I would have to point out for anyone to notice. Getting it on clearance with a 30% off event sale code I looked up online I got it for about $150. Took the money I saved an just got one of their cases for it, which are really nice too. TLDR: Check their Clearance, check online coupon codes.

Visual inspection and checking with an ohm meter pretty much all but verified they were the same. So in my opinion, Gibson's ceramic magnet humbuckers may or may not be the same units🤷‍♂️

@@waynewilcox444 They return to pitch pretty well I use the wammy on mine all of the time. works really well if you deck the back of the trem to the body and have the 6 screws up off the body about 1/8 of an inch from the body and make sure to lubricate the nut. I use the 54t to play Van Halen all the time and dont have issues with tuning when dive bombing using 9 to 46 strings. If you use your trem a lot look into highline saddles they keep the strings from sliding around on the saddles when using the trem I think they would be the 10.5 mm size to fit the 54t.

That is a *beautiful* guitar. I love its simplicity. I almost *never* use the neck pick ups in my SG and LP and I *always* have the tone dialed all the way up. I'm beginning to think all those extra controls are wasted on a guy like me, so a guitar like this might be perfect.

I use a volume and tone in 1 knob. Heres how: . Just double the value of the pot and use a LINEAR pot. The center tab goes to hot. Ground one outer tab. The other has a capacitor going to ground. Use the cap value for the original pot value, or whatever you like.....Rotation wise, CENTER is full on for V and Tone. Rotating one way is like turning down the V , the other way the Tone....As a whole it sounds around the same as a normal V & T unless you're into having the tone full off and the V just barely on.

This is for all intent of comparison, Mr. Slick's take on a Kramer Baretta. The funny thing is that even as affordable as these guitars are Slick actually uses regular production models of these for live shows. It is not like any of his road guitars are specially made; he uses the exact guitar that you and I can buy for 240 bucks. That says something when the artist whose name is on the headstock rocks the same guitar in the same format as that of retail consumers; just saying. Thanks Max for sharing another hidden gem.
@GonzGunner
@GonzGunner 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Max, great presentation on the Slick guitar! You covered all the bases very well as to pointing out how it's a lot of guitar for the money. I totally agree. Glad you explained the details of the pickup too. It reminds me of a comment Warren Haynes made several years ago, which I use as a guideline for evaluating and purchasing a pickup; "A good pickup is a good pickup. There is no such thing as a rock pickup, a country pickup, or a heavy metal pickup. And don't use a pickup that "bites your head off", its not going to make you a better player". As to "Air Wolf", my mind always goes back to Jan Michael Vincent, and his "what could have been" career. To me, he had the talent and skill to put him with the all time greats of Hollywood, but he basically hurt himself with his own scandalous behavior and substance abuse problems, which ultimately did him in.

Solid, and the brass appointments are just a 'step above'. Even ordered the same case, LOL. And it's 'friggin' ORANGE!' inside, to be sure! The only thing I've changed was to install shorted saddle screws as I lowered the action enough that the original saddle screws were scraping the side of my hand.

I got a tele style Slick from gfs many many years ago now. In fact it was from the very first run of Slick branded stuff. I still have it although it’s been heavily modded and I rarely play it. But the swamp ash body, open pore super thin finish was really really cool and is why I decided to order one back then. Mine is quite heavy for swamp ash and needed a neck shim to achieve proper action due to the design of the wraparound bridge being sunk into the body. But It’s a cool guitar. Everything about it is fully modern other than body shape.

I bought a SL57 Strat style about a year ago and I LOVE the guitar!!! Love the open pore finish, brass saddles, brass sustain block and brass tuners!!! Paid under 200$ at the time prices have gone up(thanks Biden)! Havent' done anything to the guitar just added dark brass pickup covers and dark brass volume/tone knobs!!! I'm just going to do cosmetic things to the guitar like replacing the relic screws add some string trees and black out as much of the hardware as possible, I never liked the relic look. The SL57 sounds amazing through my Bugera head and Bugera cab!!!!!!!!!!! The 2nd position sounds awesome for rhythm and I actually like the neck pickup for leads so warm and clear sounding!!!!!!! Always wanted a Strat style guitar that wasn't an actual Strat and I think I found it!

Well you, Darrell Braun and Phillip McKnight giving Slick the Seal of Approval goes a long way. About this model in particular it sounds amazing and it has the looks but I think this is the ONE model we need a Floyd version of. Guitar Fetish makes a clone of the famous Gotoh 1996T - arguably one of the best Licensed Floyds - that they could "age" and a Slick Lead Pickup which is high gain. They could sell it for 30$+ and have a very decent axe for budget conscious EVH fans. Amazing review man, 10/10.

What perfect timing for this vid! I bought the same exact model in Crimson Ash a couple weeks ago and absolutely love it!; it has become my current go-to axe. Thank you Max for featuring Earl Slicks line of guitars, otherwise I never would have known of them. This guitar is killer!; especially for what you're paying. The body looks and feels incredible; love the deep texture/sanded stain work- and no worry about fingerprints! I am super impressed with the fit/finish of the neck and fingerboard (please not: the rosewood on my SL54's fingerboard is lighter than Max's). Frets are good; crowned and rounded nicely, however they certainly can be further polished. Neck is satin-smooth and fast; neck relief arrived spot-on, and has been stable thus far. I was able to get the action down to 3/64 without any dead notes/buzzing. I love the pickup; this vintage style aged humbucker can still be aggressive and very harmonic-rich for my playstyle. Also, you can achieve a nice range of tonal qualities with the volume knob alone . All the brass hardware feels solid and weighty: tuners are smooth, volume pot is smooth, brass vintage saddles are way cool, and the brass block in the tremolo is the cherry on top. For the downsides: The largest weak-point for me is the nut. The edges are very sharp and you certainly will feel it while on the first fret. Also the string slots need refinement; the slot spacing is fine, but excess material needs to be filed out (fortunately the guitar holds tune well and no broken strings thus far). I'll certainly remedy these when the time comes to change strings. Secondly, the screw-in tremolo arm has that cheap clunky slop like most other budget strats; so heavy trem users may want to consider a bridge swap or some alternate modifications. (The guitar still sustaines really well, however) Lastly: My guitar did come with a minor ding in the back-center of the neck. Fortunately, the neck is so smooth and the dent is in a spot where my palm never feels it; so it's only a minor nit-pick. It seems like it may have happened prior to shipping because my box was undamaged upon arrival (was packaged very well) Overall I'm super stoked over this axe. If you don't want to fork you the cash for the equivalent Charvel (which, according to Earl, released 2 years after his original single hum superstrat), or a high-end Kramer Baretta, this is a no-brainer. Plus the Slick lineup of guitars have so much character, all while playing/sounding great. Highly recommend!!!🤘🎸

How does the neck feel on it? Is there any fret buzz on any of the frets? Are any of the frets dented. The reason why I asked these questions is I bought a fretlight guitar and it had those issues with it. I returned it and they sent me a second one with the same exact issues.
@Droops24
@Droops24 2 жыл бұрын
@@christophert7251 The neck feels great to me. I would say it's a thin C profile. Smooth satin back. It's certainly impresses me for a Chinese made neck. Fretboard is very nice, no issues with poor inlays/side markers (all sanded flush). No visible glue squeeze-out. None of frets on mine are dented, however I did do a fret rocker test and there are spots that have high frets (although very slight) The guitar shipped with fairly low action (5/64-4/64). As I mentioned, I have the action set a bit lower to to my preferred height of 3/64 and I have only one remaining buzz (D string, 11th fret), which I can only hear unplugged. Overall, super happy with it. Sorry to hear about your Fretlight's. I never played one, but them sending you another lemon has deterred me. As for budget guitars, I certainly love my new Slick Sl54T and my Harley Benton Cst-24; best budget guitar's I own.

I know the spirit of the channel is "deals" and "lower cost" guitars but I'm seeing you wear a Breitling Superocean 42 so I'm curious what high end guitars you're into as well haha

Like all the SLIK guitars you’ve looked at, I want to buy this one too. I LOVE the aesthetic of the SLIK sanded down line. Ugh… that fuggin’ red and black with brass… gonna separate me from more of my money I suspect! 🤘😆🤘

Very glad you made this video. I've been in the market for a single pickup guitar and I was torn between this model and the Kramer Beretta. I think it's hard decision to make because I feel I'll be happy with either one.

Last Summer I was looking for a guitar with P90s. I ended up deciding on the Fender Telecaster Noventa. It’s got a single bridge pickup. It has quickly become my favorite guitar of the whole collection. (It’s the coral colored version with a maple neck.) I would at least pick it up and try it if you see one in the wild. They may be more than you’re looking to spend, but worth every penny IMO.

I have two Slick SL52 guitars in sunburst and "black ash" (natural with black filler pigment). The pups really do have character. I also have a SL57 (s-style) in surf green and a SL60 in yellow (like an LP Special with two P90s--now those are hot pups!). I had a SL51 (t-style) in butterscotch (IRL, orange) that I gave away. The SL60 with those great P90s is my favorite. GFS also sells Xaviere guitars, somewhat more traditional than the Slicks. I would really like to see Max demo a couple of those. If you subscribe to GFS, they will regularly send coupons for guitars, cases, parts, etc., ranging from 10-25% off some items. I got 15% off each of my Slicks, bringing the price down to about $219 each at that time.

Man slick have did it again another killer as weapon dude and the finish is super cool!!! This has high end features on a budgeted guitar, and man , with all the new things that guitar companies are giving players these days they are not needed at all if you can't make a single himbucker do what you want it to do then you need more practice!!!!!! It was good enough for the master of all Edward Van Halen it will be good enough for you and everyone else, no thrills just bad assadry !!!!!

You really should give the harley benton 8 string fanfret guitar a try! They are dirt cheap (200$) and I don’t remember you ever trying an 8 string of a fanfret guitar in the past, so it would make a really interesting video. Loved the video man, thank you for making my day every time you upload!🤘🤘

I have a Charvel Jackson Strat'ish; from the 80's made in Japan Nearly the same as your Slick. 1 humbucker 1 knob 22 frets, Difference being the Floyd Rose 1st gen and locking nut on the C J, Great guitar But I really miss a tone knob, But once you get your pedals figured out? It's a lot of Fun.Of course todays modeling amps allow a vast tone variance as well.

I don't like a wide open pickup, even just the little resistance from having the tone on 10 makes pickups sound smoother (and to me, better).
I have 60 GUITARS, Here's My TOP 6!
