That Moog does sound glorious. Nice honest review and enjoyed the music. I snagged a Seekers Voice Spectra on a whim some years back and it transpired that it's a superb analogue vocoder. Unfortunately they have become incredibly hard to find. The old Roland SVC-350 is another nice one and the Roland Jupiter-X/Xm has a deep vocoder section. There's the MicroFreak too. But nice suggestions from you too, many ways to vocode in the 2020s.

I guess for tight budgets, there's Behringer's VC340 vocoder / string / voice / ensemble. Their take on Roland's VP-330, the keyboard cousin of the Roland SVC-350. For a Behringer, they got the aesthetic more right than they usually do. I quite like the look and feel, simplicity, compactness and sturdiness of it. There's XILS V+ for a software emulation. For the Korg VC10, FBVC is an emulation by Full Bucket Music.

Pro tip - how to get a moog vocoder for free in three simple steps: 1. Open Guitar Center credit card and buy the vocoder 2. Pay nothing on the loan 3. When they will start to constantly call you from random numbers, just answer them through your new vocoder. They will think it’s robot and won’t call you further. Easy.

8:40 Man I love my Mininova. It as my first decent synth, and every time I look at the Hydrasynth, Modal Argon/Cobalt, or some other gear, I first go back to my Mininova to see if there's anything missing that warrants my GAS. So far, I always end up falling in love with it over again, especially with patch design via the VST. I haven't messed with the vocoder much though, and now I wonder whether there can be some cool patches that can be made for modulating external signals/voice. Hmmm. (If I get anything, it'll probably be an Arturia MKII keyboard mainly for Spectrasonics Omnisphere/Ableton. I ultimately upgraded my CPU to the Ryzen 5950x in lieu of some expensive synth because I already have the software. And being a super computer nerd, I am super interested in DIY computerized DSP. ***Also queue 1010Music's new Lemondrop and Fireball synths!! :D ***.)

It's pretty funny. I listen to this, and other videos of people using this Vocoder, and I think: "that is BY FAR the nicest-sounding vocoder out there", but then I think: "no way in hell am I spending $5k on that". Because it would totally be a gimmick piece for me. But, you know, if you were really wanting to focus on THAT sound, I can totally see how this would be a "reasonable" purchase for someone. Then again, I've bought some weird stuff that other people would probably consider vastly over-priced, so I guess it takes all kinds.

Can't believe you managed to restrain yourself from doing that big cross-all-the-wires robot voice in this video. Excellent video! Also, that's an excellent tip about using a compressor on the mic signal before sending it to the vocoder for a smoother tone. I did that years ago. I had my condenser mic running to a preamp, then to a compressor. I then sent that processed signal to a DAW, which may have had some additional added processing done to the signal (I don't quite remember), then bussed that signal to my Mininova. The results were amazing!!! The voice was very clear and intelligible. In fact, it could probably be used as a lead vocal in a song. The difference is night and day compared to plugging a regular mic straight into the vocoder (Mininova). I agree, the Mininova has a very nice vocoder, which was the reason I bought it. BTW, I feel ya concerning your mentality towards ultra expensive gear. It can definitely make you feel a certain way towards it (extremely careful) and you would certainly treat your most expensive piece differently compared to other gear...not that some of the other gear isn't expensive as well...but not quite as expensive as that most expensive piece which may cost over $4000 or more. It's the simple thought of wanting to keep it mint and not wanting to get a single scratch on it, let along break it, knowing it cannot be easily replaced or cheaply fixed. Yeah, I'm definitely with you on that! Synths like the Polybrute and Prophet 10 come to mind here. I don't own a Moog One, but I would certainly feel that way about it if I did!!!!

Excellent video as always! I don't think I'll ever own a piece of gear that's 5000S (But if I do > It would be the DSI Prophet X). That being said, as an "investment" for the (already) rich ones out there > This would be a great deal since those Moog units sell for double the price after they discontinue them (like in 3-5 years)... Just look at the insane prices people are asking on Reverb for the Moog pedals. Anyway, it sounds amazing regardless!

I'm looking to design and build a vocoder inspired by the Bode / Moog 7702 schematic, which I'm in the process of reverse engineering. I could easily end up spending more than $5k before I'm finished, of course - but it's not like you embark on projects like this as a way to acquire equipment, and certainly not to save money.

I'm lucky enough to have a spectravox vocoder, although with 10 bands I find it limiting for actual vocals as they are not as intelligible through it. My favorite thing to use it for is to run random stuff through it, like you did in the intro. It's great as an effect to run a drum machine in, with chords on the carrier. You get this kind of pitched modulation sounding effect that can be really inspiring. I highly recommend using vocoders with other stuff than the human voice because that way they immediately lose the gimmicky vibe they can often have:)

Great video. One question - did you find anything interesting / musically useful if you cross patched the bands? I tried this in some digital software vocoders and I didn't really get anything particularly interesting. Aw dude, I love vocoder. Even more so when it’s you using it. Lol perfect circuit’s awesome. I used to get that nervous thing when handling ridiculously expensive gear in the studio. I think it’s actually a LOT worse when it’s NOT yours. Worth it? If you produce an album every year with that sound, yes, IMO. If you are just going to use it every once in a while though, no way. That’s the strange thing about expensive gear, if you are too nervous or don’t have the demand to use it heavily, you shouldn’t even think about it. I personally suffered that more than a few times. Finally get an expensive piece, barely use it and then sell it, because I just wasn’t getting enough use to justify the cost. So, if you go expensive, USE THE SH!T out of it. Don’t let worry over dinging it up stop you. IMO, the most sad thing in the audio world is stupidly expensive gear THAT ALMOST NEVER GETS USED. These amazing pieces of gear were designed/built to make music, not sit on shelf for bragging rights.

Wait for the Behringer clone. I own tons of Moog equipment, but this is way out of my budget for a single effect. Sticking with JD-Xi or my Electro Harmonix V256 pedal. Wouldn’t mind getting that Spectravox though just to complete my triple M32, DFAM, Subharm setup. I was actually at Moogfest 2019 when they had the workshop for it, but it was still too expensive for me to justify building it (and not even knowing what you are building until the event started).

Or they can finally just widely release the spectravox. That would solve the issue since it’s already a fleshed out product.

@@NoirEtBlancVie I’m sure they will eventually. The other workshop exclusives were.
