0:43: it’s not exactly about ‘replacement’. It’s more about “these were never available at a price I could afford at that time”. In any event, it’s close enough in sound and function that anyone who can utilize one can utilize the other.

It's 1333€ now. What would you say on Astrolab vs Mod-x 6 vs Fantom 06? Keybeds... Mod-X and 06 don't have aftertouch. They're all around 1200-1350€.

I reckon it was a generational thing. In today's music tech world alot of companies pride themselves on NOT being too menu divey if at all. Nice ergonomics, clean, clear and aesthetically pleasing user interfaces, Dave Smith did NOT come from that world. So i think its a case of appreciate it for what it is and for the price as many have mentioned too many other interesting options. Still considering one tho......

I have a Pro Tools MIX system from 2001 that has the Access Virus Indigo plug in that runs on the DSPs on the PCI. It's the exact same DSP as the hardware version. That is the only reason I keep that system going.

A terrific piece of kit, but an odd size power socket, unclear knob markings and a power hungry and unfriendly battery consumption knock it down to a 4/5.

Totally does! I always hate when I do this too... cheap can = problems a lot... I rag on a lot of people for showing off new gear to people and convincing them to buy it, but honestly, it's somewhat wiser vs possibly something older that just causes headaches.

@ if only you could get brand new space echo! Luckily there are people restoring them to 100%. I’d still say, if it works 50% of the time and does ‘something’ then it’s cool, if you have space for it

Unfortunately a rather crappy synthesizer, pads often sound somehow like toilet flushes or rather tinny etc.. Everything else is also too artificial and cheap. But even more amazing are the clueless KZbin commentators. Pseudo musicians. Talentless.

Hey there’s just also that element of experimenting and going on a fun musical quest. For a lot of us there is a certain allure of vintage gear, as you said, and exploring is fun, albeit annoying at times. Just sell it and enjoy having gone down the rabbit hole.

Just for the record the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 was a *5-voice polyphonic* analog synth with digital control (e.g., presets as well as x-mod) that was introduced at the 1978 NAMM. So it predated the Sub37 by 35 years or so wrt being the first analog with digital control. Just sayin' I actually bought both within the first year of their production, and i love them both! Totally different machines, but wow to both!

Thank you for this. Always fun to see someone’s GOAT list. For me… Drum Machine: Luma-1 the Dave Smith endorsed recreation of his LM1 but more reliable and flexible. VSTi: u-he Diva (amazing recreation of classic analog synths) Audio Plugin: Sandman Pro (versatile, creative, different) Poly Synth: John Bowen Solaris: the right mix of analog and digital with deep modulation options, but this one is tough because the Hartmann Neuron is a close contender as well Guitar Pedal: Love your choice of the Moogerfooger. I love all of those and that Phaser is tough to beat. I think I would choose the Moog MKPH 12-stage rack mount phaser. Not a pedal, so not technically a fit here, but if you love the MoogerFooger, you’re going to adore the MKPH. The MKPH and Roland PH-830 are my two ATF phasers. That said, overall guitar pedal, I really like the old Univibe combination phaser/tremelo for the unique sounds it creates. Outboard Gear: So tough because there are so many amazing choices: Tough, tough choice here for desert island between Manley Massive Passive EQ, Pultec EQP-1A EQ and UA 1176. I’d have to tip the scale to the Manley Massive Passive, but the Overstayer and Thermionic Culture Vulture should also not be overlooked. This is the hardest section for me, but in the end Manley Massive Passive (not the Mastering one, the Standard one).

Owned a Virus C when I was 20 years old, sold it 3 years later, regretted it for 10 years... Bought a desktop TI and C in 2023, and in February 2024 they stopped selling the TI2 at music stores. So happy I got my hands on this synth, love it. They still can be found on Ebay and other marketplaces, but I wouldn't wait for 5-10 years, because by then they will be quite rare I guess.

Roger Linn was originally a guitarist and recording engineer who worked for Leon Russell. It was during his time with Leon that he designed the Linn LM-1. I had a friend who was an engineer for Leon during that time who had stories about Roger and his initial prototype that sounded awful... and everyone laughed at him. However, he had the last laugh. I also worked with the late, great Roger Nichols back in the late 90s. He told me that both he and Roger Linn took a machine code programming class together, both with the idea of making a drum machine... one for high fidelity drums (Nichols) and the other for mass producing a drum machine for sale (Linn). The thought of two guys with the same first name taking a machine code programming class together with a similar end goal in mind still blows me away. Nichols could remember the month, day, year, hour, minute, and second that he first pushed record on a machine to record the output of Wendell. He also said, "and remember, there was no MIDI then so we had to put trigger pulses on tape ourselves." Talk about the work that these two men put in on their ideas! My hat's off to both of them. However, Roger Linn deserves way more credit for all that he continues to bring to the music world. Cheers!

My favorite thing about vintage hardware is that I can find rare stuff for cheap because someone doesn't know what they have, and then I can resell it online for a lot more to someone who doesn't know what they want.

Access transitions from synth to a guitar focus, while the inverse is happening in the music industry. Maybe he felt guilty for contributing to the death of rock.

I got my 501 for $70 back in the 90's, would sure as heck do it again for that price. Modern prices, nah. I did get a new tape a few years ago. My spliced tape was not as smooth as the replacement I bought. Here's my modern pedal replacement: Earthquaker Avalanche Run into Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water.

synths definitely weren't in a lull in 2012. Starting in 2009-2010 the resurgence of new analog synths had started, there was a growing synth youtube ecosystem, eurorack was exploding, MOST new music had synths in the production, bands like Chromatics, Little Dragon, Flying Lotus, Cut Copy, Neon Indian, Com Truise and so on were starting to headline festivals. BUT, it was before everyone priced gear like they were a legit brick and mortar shop with a return policy. Reverb really changed that perspective. It used to be common for used synths to sell for half of retail, in fact it was the norm. That only shifted dramatically in the pandemic.

I got an RE-301 Chorus Echo back in the late 90s for $50. It was in a"junk" pile at a local music store. It was the best $50 I ever spent. It sounded amazing and was so much fun. Sold it for nearly 10x that amount about 5 years later. I miss it, but don't miss the maintenance. Modern digital recreations are good enough for me.

Funny thing: after years of encountering tape echo units of various types (the Roland REs, the horrible little Univox, Multivox's rebadged Roland, WEM's Copy Cat, Maestro EC3, and a few others), I didn't go for any of these. I got a Dynacord Echocord Super 76 instead. For one thing, it's as much a "known quantity" as the Rolands, thanks to it being used by loads of Krautrock artists. And it allows one specific thing that all of the others except the Echoplex can't do: glitch the tape! The Echocords and the Echoplexes only use a single playback head. But they have them on sliding mechanisms, which is about as close as you'll get to being able to GRAB the tape...well, except for the Copy Cat, where you can literally do that with the risk of ruining the loop. The Dynacords, however, maintain the tape path when you're going bug-nuts with the time slider, making loop damage much less likely. As a result, the Dynacords are more like tape delay + spring instruments; they even have a tone stack, plus dual speed. Are they more reliable? I think so, actually. About the only thing more smashproof would be Maestro's Echoplex models, which were designed primarily as live effects...tape echo in the studio at that time was mainly done with a spare 2-track, maybe with a Varispeed. Not saying they're as reliable as a solid state pedal, no. But if you want to cover, say, the intro to Kraftwerk's "Ruckzuck"...yeah, nothing else nails the feel.

I just picked one of these up last week as well. Same exact model the 150. I think it’s great. It did have some issues and all of the knobs and jacks needed to be cleaned/deoxidized. The preamp alone make it worth it. It can make my digital hardware sound analog. I will say that I personally repair hardware so I’m not worried about the issues because I know I can personally fix them.

Ha! Ha! I don't understand the lust for old gear - not because much wasn't great butfor the headaches and repair and maintenance bills - if you can get them fixed at all. I had an original RE501 back in the day - good fun at the time but sold it along with my Roland 100m system. Quite happy now with software versions - and no one who listens to the music knows the difference 😊

Great video. Care and maintenance of vintage gear is its own hobby. It can be a lot of fun to learn how to fix old stuff, but that can be a big distraction if your goal isn't to become a skilled gear tech.
