His body language during this number is also incredible. He perfectly conveys how nervous Charles is while trying to remember the words. It’s that combination of stiffness with bursts of animation that speaks to the soul of everyone who loves singing patter songs but struggles with memorizing lyrics (okay, maybe that ‘everyone’ is just me).

I love the parts of this show that seem to be added just so that Steve Martin can be the hilarious and original comedian he is. In the first season where he's in the wheelchair drugged out of his mind and imagines he gets up and makes a long meaningful speech to Jan, only to realize he's mumbling gibberish and everyone's looking at him like he's crazy. Then the white room incidents. President McKinley the fish. And this song.

I don't think this OMITB episode gets enough credit - it's one of the most well-crafted episodes you're ever likely to see. Here, you have a Broadway-worthy song, delivered in a perfectly-acted performance by Steve Martin (where he nails the number but still manages to convey the awkwardness of someone deeply unsure of his ability to pull it off). Later, you have Meryl Streep's increasingly impassioned performance on stage serving double duty in conveying both her nanny character's feelings as well as Loretta's own personal pain, with the music precisely synced to what's happening off-stage. The talent on this show - both on-camera and behind the scenes - is pretty much unmatched on any other series currently in production.

I think of all the phenomenal acting Steve Martin has ever done, this was by far the best over the top craziness. The whole series is so weird yet so oddly hilarious at the same time. Martin Short is actually at his funniest in this show as well, and I have always loved Selena Gomez she can be pretty funny but I started noticing a couple seasons in that her comedic responses started becoming more hilarious as well. She is learning their style and it’s so great (not saying she needed to learn anything , she is great.. but when you spend that much time working with people , their experience starts to rub off on you

I love that everyone in this scene has every reason to be full of doubt about Charles performance. The producer and her son have ulterior motives and have zero faith in the play despite their involvement. Putnam and the other actors on stage have seen Charles bomb, badly, several times trying to rehearse this performance, and hasn't done well at all up until this moment. The writer in the audience has the lowest expectations of all, having witnessed Putnam's very long and very hard fall from grace over a number of failed productions and years of absence from the industry, she's expecting this to be a real stinker. When Charles actually nails it and the quality of the writing of the song actually shines through, it genuinely takes everyone in the theatre by surprise, even Putnam. Probably the best moment in the series.

After all the fuss that surrounded Charles getting through this song, this flawless execution was genuinely one of the best moments in the season for me. Like 2:09 tag yourself I'm the girl on the side, absolutely relieved, floored, and wowed

It so nice that Charles wanted so hard to find the killer and help Maybel and Oliver that despite his anxiety he just nailed the song!🎉 Also great so see the full version with the end here!

I don’t get the appeal of that Jeremy Allen White dude (who just won) at all. Meanwhile Steve easily wins us over with how fantastic he is. I think he’s far more deserving of the awards.
