This is depressing. I’m not poor. My parents both worked hard and paid their way through college, both making six figures eventually. They saved as much as possible and did everything the smart way. We barely shopped and vacations were usually a few days long or only one in years. My sister got a full ride to law school. I got almost all in scholarships. My mom died and her retirement/life insurance was amazing. We have what seems like so much money, yet it doesn’t matter. Houses are still way out of price range. Eating out is very occasional. Decor/clothes shopping never happens. I am very privileged, yet I think we all need to see just how different upper middle class is compared to rich. It’s depressing to think that my mom saved her entire life to give us a better life, and she not only didn’t live to see it, but the money still is hardly enough for her goals. Money may not buy happiness, but it buys experiences, education, and food. Money is important, and anyone who says it isn’t either knows they don’t/won’t have it or has it and thinks it’s the norm.

In my country the ambulance service is part of the universal healthcare no co pay. But the patients need to file in a diagnosis from the doctor after. When its an accident, no problem. When you feel unwell you better first call an emergency doctor and HE calls the ambulance if needed. If you used the ambulance for no reason, you will pay the time of the guys inside and for the distance. It might be that an ambulance was called for an epileptic episode that is already finished when the ambulance arrives, better get yourself driven to the hospital for exam, the health insurance will pay the ambulance then. If you send the ambulance back without using it you might pay yourself after a tarif. Maybe you will be convicted for paying even an extra fee if you are a complete asshole and call the ambulance for a quick trip to the shopping mall - that is considered a crime.

@Kraken I hate to be picky, but Russia under Soviet rule wasn't "Third World". Whilst I'm not denying that conditions in the USSR were horrific, the terms First World and Third World actually come from the Cold War. First World was Western Capitalism, Communism was the Second World and Third World referred to countries outside these designations. Obviously since then these terms have come to have their own meanings as we now know them, but I personally don't think under these definitions you could describe the USSR as a "third world country"

Brand new laptop was delivered with all the windows/whatever hardware I needed. I just accepted the computer, tipped the guy, and we went back to our dorm. I found out that wasn’t normal from my roommate who was like WTF was that😂 I was so self sufficient and normal to her that she just never realized my parents had money. It was probably also because I didn’t have money. There were a lot of things that my parents could have made happen for me but over the years but there were only a few super important things that were provided by them. Nothing crazy like houses lol. Comparatively tame but good advice - get an umbrella policy as soon as you can. Most are fairly cheap, about $300 per year. You will need to also bump up your car insurance to the max (300k liability) which is also worthwhile. The policies are typically to cover $1M and kick in after any other insurance, which is why they are cheap. In short, if you are sued for something (your fault or not), it doesn't matter much where it happened, you have both 1M worth of protection, AND lawers that want to make sure the least amount possible is paid out and that it is over as fast as possible. Compare that with finding your own lawyers, and of course, their interest is in dragging it out as long as possible to keep you paying for years. There is something to be said for aligned interests and umbrella insurance does just that. Keep in mind also that just because you aren't rich now doesn't mean you can't be sued for your savings, investment and FUTURE wages and income as garnishments. That will ruin your life. Umbrella, worth it.

Most rich people I’ve met are very hard workers who would have no trouble going back to a middle-class lifestyle. The difference between them and the average worker is they are able to work hard mentally as well as physically, and they are willing to do it for years. It’s one thing to put in a 10-hour shift to keep your job. It’s another thing to put your entire life savings on the line and work 80 hour weeks coding or selling for months on end without any promise of a reward because you have an idea that you think could make you some money. That or go hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt while going to school for 10 years to become a doctor that works 60-80 hour weeks even after graduating and doing a residency. It’s not easy and takes a lot of mental stamina and forward thinking which is why most people don’t do it, and most people aren’t wealthy. It’s not because we are more noble than them.

From what I've seen, rich value simplicity and saving time over things and possessions. For example, buying two identical cars with identical specifications from nearest dealership. Instructs them to deliver the other to Italy, so when he visits his second home there, he doesn't have to learn how to use a different infotainment etc on a rental. Of course registration, insurance, services at local dealership are also handled by someone else. Not even that expensive cars, like BMW 3-series or something. Also doesn't know anything about servicing or maintaining: dealership picks up the car for annual service from his home, leaves replacement car, and brings his car back when it's ready. Car is always perfectly clean and detailed, and I doubt he knows how to even use a self-service car wash. Same with changing winter tyres or whatever, it all just happens like clockwork. And what about when you want to host a party? Just tell your event host who you want to invite and a general idea what activities you want. House is rearranged for entertaining, food is prepared according to everyones diets and allergies, fireworks starts at the perfect moment... And you can just enjoy the evening without even knowing what's going on in the background.
