Your night time insulation has to be the back bone of the kit, unless a fire can be sustained all night, which may also compromise your location. I also know my goose down quilts are effective in low temps, and a whole lot lighter, but not as durable, and certainly not cheap. Thanx for watching...bex

Good tips Bex, cracking idea improving zips, cannot abide kit with poor zips or stitching. There is a lot of brand snobbery about sleeping bags but as you say everyone has a sleep temperature, it really is personal choice and a bit of nous. All best.

A very good point you make about different peoples physiology impacting more on whether they sleep cold or hot than a bag. Another thing I have found is that women feel the cold more than men.

Sleeping bag manufactures usually have doss bags for women. Often identical cut templates, just with more insulation, and unfortunately in pink, other wise I would buy the ladies bags, for the extra insulation as a cold sleeper...b

Regarding the spare zipper slider: I'ver read somewhere that the zipper is "loose" at the top to make opening the bag faster in case of emergency by just pulling the slider off and letting the zipper to open. If it is true, it is very easy to loose the slider and then it is a good idea to have a spare one :) Othervise, great video! I'm currently looking for a new sleeping bag and I want a military one. I like the brittish stuff (not a UK citizen) so this is almost exactly what I was looking for.

I think you have read incorrect or misleading info. The facts are this. The (brake away zip) in which you speak, where the zip slider can be pulled off the teeth at the head end, is found on the Wiggys sleeping bag range, and not the UK military zippers. All UK sleeping bags are fitted with (crash zips) where the zip can be forced open from the top by pulling on both parts of the bag, from top to bottom. The British crash bags have a metal stopper end, to prevent the slider coming off at the top, this is just factual. If you wish to see the stopper end and crash ability I can personalize photos or video and send it to your email if it helps.....Also see wiggys sleeping bags on youtube by jerry wigutow (owner and founder of Wiggys) which has the brake away sliders....

Got to agree with your choice of sleeping bags. Always wanted a buffalo but couldn’t decide which one a superbag of the outer4. Use a 90 pattern mainly. I know people complain about the weight but I don’t care my first priority of any camp is a good night sleep. Also like it, never tried the new version only seen it at high prices, but definitely would like the 2 buffalo. I remember mid 1980’s never heard of bivi bags and just sleeping under a basha, on a rollmat which was on top of another basha. 2 people under and rarely got soaked.

Top Video Bex. I looked at trying to make a sleep system with a snugpak softie elite 1 at 900 gramms & a snugpak softie elite 3 at 1. 7kgs plus a British Army bivi bag. around 950 gramms, but I am leaning towards a snugpak softie elite 4 at just under 2kgs its rated at - 10 comfort but I will take that with a pinch of salt. I had a Royal Marine Artcic Sleeping Bag, it was the warmest bag I have had to date, but it was very heavy Mate. You have to buy and carry a bag or bags that works for you Mate. ATB Reeco

I had a surplus bag years ago and after zip disintegration I stitched an inch overlap up to the knees then robbed buttons and tape from the danish cookie tin in the kitchen. Sewed a 4" long tape with a button on the end on the 'out' side flap and a 3-4" tape on the 'Inside' (matching the sewn overlap) *Tapes are sewn inside the bag, I say in/out to differentiate the edges* Repeat every 8-10" up to shoulder. Stick your legs in and grab a buttoned tape, take the other one and halfhitch the buttoned tape around the other one, repeat to required comfort level. When you want to egress simply find a button and pull. Lasted me a few years including being homeless in coastal Cumbria in woodland.

Sounds well engineered. During the time I was homeless, I didn't have a bag for the first few months, and slept very well in my clothes, adding more clothes in the colder times, I taped poly bags together to improvise a makeshift bivvy bag, the cold wind would have been my down fall. Now my Hobo pack contains sleeping bags and a free standing tent along with a sheep skin to insulate the bag from the ground. Keeping warm and dry is the easy bit really, others who have never been homeless won't realise the loneliness of it all, and keeping those dark thoughts of ending it all at bay, with six foot of rope. I tried to lead a good life, but fast found that a lawless approach to gathering food and clothing worked too, worst thing they could do is the police gave me a night in the cells, with a hot drink a meal with some warm blankets....Hope things worked out out for you....bex

I would buy another 90 pat arctic again, but only if it was super grade, unused. Found using it with two bivvy bags was far warmer, one on the out side, and bring the other bivvy in with you.....#best kip ever...bex

the 90 pattern is foolproof and robust, imo its the best bargain bag available. I have a soft spot for the old 58 pattern down bags, but finding one in decent condition is pretty tough as most are old and well worn now, last couple i had were thin .... i looked at get one refilled but it was silly money. I had 3 snugpak bags ... their comfy enough, but not robust same as most of their products. I recently bought 2 sleeping bags ... after going for a while without owning one, because i came to the conclusion in winter it was the easiest and most efficient sleep system. (i picked up a current lightweight patrol bag, and a chunky french police sleeping bag)

A cheap way to refill the 58 bag is to kill a couple of seagulls....lol The quills on the 58 always pierced me in the night keeping me awake. Have to agree a doss bag is for cold weather. Recon I could sleep in my ECW jacket rest of the year. A sub zero bag I am really giving a lot of consideration to, is Wiggys Antartic..... Also fishermen/anglers who spend all winter night fishing, I see using NGT fleece lined 5 season bed chair type bags. Both my options are bulky and heavier than most people would agree with, but I have little else in the pack other than shelter and a doss bag. Best tip just for you and I, is to look toward Anglers and deer hunters, people who actually use the kit in foul weather, rather than prepping survival channels.... Mil spec kit is just a cheaper and lighter way to go for the main stream preppers however....The way I'm heading with my kit (keep warm dry and well fed, for as long as I can, regardless of weight, mass or price) Might be the only one with that notion of course....atb bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor catching and killing the seagulls is the easy part, stuffing them into the bag requires specialist sewing skills, lol ..... i know somebody who reconditioned his 58 pattern buying a large amount of down and getting a seamstress to open and re-stuff it, while the end results were good, as i recall it cost him in excess of £70 (you are right by the way its not true down, but feathers) I have looked at Carp fishing bivi bags and 5 season sleeping bags ... even bought one as a present for a relative, they look amazing .... but are to cumbersome and really more suited for car camping. I saw some local fishermen hauling their gear out and they were using carts, ... made stop and wonder for a moment but i usually go off the tracks, so not practical for me.

Although some of my kit is minimal, often views are unaware of all the camera gear it takes to film youtube videos, with tripods cameras, spare batteries and lighting, mic packs. And your totally right in what you said they don't know what is going on with your personal life i have the British army modulour system all two bags and the liner. Its an massive system. People need realise that its a dame site cheater that the carinthia defence 4. I enjoy every video you make the time to make theses videos. These days I prefer to just roll the sleeping bag while ifs still inside the bivvy, and sit the whole thing on top of my pack (no compression) The buffalo fills about half of my 50 litre pack loose filled. People do get silly ideas, with out any foundation to their claims.... lol The buffalo into 50 L is on this channel too...atb bex

The first couple of years we had the Carinthia set plus hooped bivy ...later on the issued the Fecsa clones till now....still good stuff ...almost the same as the Brit without a spare zipper and mesh inside pockets . I'm ex Dutch infantry and using both systems for survival/bushcraft.

IMHO this is a better way to use this bag, roomier, and the hood works as a face shield. Using a bag like this, is how to get a great nights sleep even if/when the zipper fails, and the extra material can be tucked under your body like a quilt, or draped loose like a duvet. This is only applicable with a centre zip bag of course....# £30, worth it....bex

Great video again Bex I've got the Arctic sleeping bag bit heavy but its my go to sleeping bag, like you I'm a cold sleeper paired with a Bivvy bag it keeps me warm sometimes to warm. In the summer i just use it as a over quilt. Quick question where did you get your army smock from in your previous video?

Your pack becomes a whole lot lighter with only a sleeping bag in it. Add bivvy bag, insulating pad, a basha and a cook set, you would still be well under 9 kilos. The killer is putting a mere 9 kilo content in to a bergen weighing 4.5 kilos empty....Wish I had a super grade pat 90, mine is as good as dead now...lol

Will do. But in short Bergens are never washed. We allow it to dry, and remove dirt with a stiff brush. Civilian rucks I personally sponge down with dish soap, hose off to rinse then line dry...b

The apologies are mine, it was my misunderstanding. Down quilts & sleeping bags I personally use baby shampoo, and massage it it the bath tub, rinse with cool water not cold, and tumble dry it on the lowest heat with half dozen tennis balls to prevent feathers clumping for an hour or two. Synthetic sleeping bags, 40 degrees in a machine, drip dry on the line, and tumble it for half hour or so. Remember with every wash will degrade your bags life span. Mil-spec bags take about 12-20 washes before needing replacing. The life spam can be extended by using a sleeping bag liner, and only washing the liner instead, I personally find liners twist up while sleeping. Last option with synthetics, never wash them unless covered in blood or mud, and replace every five years, by that time better bags will come on the market. My last mil-spec bag brand new was £30, and about £70 to civi street. My best tip for you, never buy a used military bag, there is no telling how many washes the previous owner gave it. Buy new and don't get in the bag with muddy boots and clothes as squaddies need to (another reason to buy new) and ensure the lowest limit (survival rating) is at least 10 degrees below expected temperature, example expected low temp -10 your bag needs to be -20 extreme lower limit. Hi, there, recently found your channel and been working my way through your uploads, good information. If you have time I've got a few questions, I have the 58 pattern bag but looking for an upgrade, there seems to be a few different issue bags advertised but with a variety of names, sometimes visually different but referred by different names e.g. 90 pattern/95 pattern, Arctic (synthetic) and Arctic mk2 (Down/Feather) Royal Marine Arctic etc etc , then some are listed which look the same but with again a variety of different names, pretty confusing and I'll put that don to sellers not naming them correctly. I'd like the more recent modular Fecsa system which seem to say 'Modular' on the sewn in label. Could you shed some light on the various types that were issued after the 58 pattern and how many were designed to be used as double bags (not counting a liner as a bag) On the subject of Pertex/pile, back in the late 80's Survival Aids (Cumbria) sold a pertex/pile bag system with shoulder zips so you could get your arms out, nice set-up, Survival Aids had a nice range of kit back them just post Falklands, 58 Patt drop pouches in various forms, arctic smocks and bivy bags in Gore-Tex which was just coming onto the market.They also sold Lundhags boots which I always liked the look of but were out of my price range as was most of the kit Survival Aids sold :-)

Here's a quick run-thru..... 58 pattern Arctic bag with full hood (3kilos) was issued 1958 - 1990, and was a feathered fill bag, used by all regiments including RM (Royal Marines). Often the quills fell over time, rendering it useless. It was a single bag used with a choice of 2 water proof coverings (bivvy bags) full nylon or nylon and rubber base..... 90 Pattern 1990-2015 "Cold Weather bag" (nick named the arctic) but was actually only rated to -8C, and was a synthetic fill bag, weighing approx 2.8 kilos, and has a face hole rather than a real hood. Issued as a single bag, to be used with a gore-tex bivvy bag... UK modular system "Facsa" Carinthia Clone, a medium weight 3 season bag, Summer is not included with this rating, as a second separate bag is used for summer. Both bags have hollow fill synthetic fill, the 3 season is rated to a comfort of -18C and the summer bag a comfort of +10C. Combining both bags gives an artic rated value, when used in conjunction with a Gore-tex bivvy bag..... Carinthia modulated bags (Austrian made). Same as the fecsa bags, but has more modularity, for example Defence 4 has a rating of -15C while the defence 6 has a rating of -18C but weighs a kilo more. Carinthia has a better build quality, and uses G-loft hollow fill synthetic fibres, including a layer of aluminium flex called thermaflect, and comes at a much greater cost to the buyer when compared to the "Fecsa" clone version. Also to be used in conjunction with a Gore-tex bivvy bag..... Taking in to account all the above bags are to be used wearing (BDU) full battle dress uniform. No one person will have the same favourite of the above sleeping bags, but from a point of view of a cold sleeper, such as myself, the "fecsa" 3 season and bivvy at +3C and bivvy bag, has been exceptional for me, although I question the quality of the zipper.... Later in the series I will look at the Carinthia Defence 4 in comparison to the "fecsa"...all the best bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor Thanks for that Bex, I'd like a Buffalo system bag but a bit expensive, I can get a new medium/medium Fecsa which can go in a goretex bivy bag so I'll start with that but might try something different for an inner bag. I don't have a problem sleeping in BDU or softie coat and trousers, I have a pair of the tent boots that you showed in one of your videos, bought them after suffering cold feet in a German sleeved sleeping bag in sub zero temp some years ago. I also looked at the Dutch M90 some years ago. Modern bags can achieve a similar R value using modern insulating materials, which in turn affords lighter and more compact options. The pack is the Brandit Aviator. Although I ordered the 80 litre, I received the 100 Litre, and love it. Not as tough as an infantry bergen, but 1.5 kilos lighter and much roomier, and so comfy to use. I often put 2 Fecsa medium weight bags together on bitter nights, total 4.5 kg & 50 litres mass. I use a large outer and medium inner. Just guessing here, but maybe two bags the same size, the outer would compress the inner, and devalue its insulating properties. (No air gap) to insulate. Worth buying the large medium weight bag to add to your Medium weight bag imo...bex

Watched this video a couple times and I know now what was confusing me....Your Army Modular sleeping bag like mine does not have FESCA written inside on the label.....Yet my Dutch Army sleep system does have FESCA written inside on both parts of the sleep system...Can you please explain to me why one has and one hasnt but both classed as FESCA.....Thank You............

Fecsa is a Spanish company who manufacture these bags. Nato then order changes/modifications to a standard bag before despatching, such as design of the inner drying pockets etc. These changes are requisitioned and a separate label is required, UK post modded bags will have an NSN (Nato stock number) printed on their own label. Unmodified bags, are sent out with the manufactures label to countries who did NOT request modifications be made. I think Austria and Germany issued standard Carinthia defence 4 bags to troops, Dutch ordered unmodified Fecsa (Carinthia clone bags) and UK ordered modified Fecsa bags. In essence Dutch and UK bags are identical, made by the same company, other than a couple of very small changes prior to being issued. The Carinthia def 4 is the superior bag by far imo, but costs more to purchase....b

Bex have you ever had the Dutch army ecws sleeping bag I'm lead to believe it's the only surplus bag better than the British army arctic

Not used one mate, I know its only a hollow fill fiber insulation and at 5 kg and 35 litres, not sure of its lower limits. My go to is the UK MSS at just 2 kilos for the medium and 20 litres, and the fill is apex climashild insulation with thermafect . Used with a bivvy took me down to -7C just in my shorts and was sweating (I am a cold sleeper)... I think the Dutch M90 is too out dated for practical modern use and vastly over priced too heavy and too bulky imho (but there is a fan base) and each to their own.... Remember army doss bags are rated by temperature only if the occupant is wearing full ECW combat ready clothing and a bivvy bag... If you are gonna spend M90 money research Carinthia Def 6 first. I can only imagine the snugpak fan boys, have never used a mil spec bag. The Fecsa is not a bad replacement for the 90, I just hate coiled zips. Might stitch in a proper neck and shoulder baffle tho....bex
