I bought a brand new Russian Army (Ratnik) hooped bivvy for £90 off eBay and I'm really pleased with it. It's a double hooped system (like the Snugpak Stratosphere) that comes with two separate mesh vent options at the head end. It even comes with a white cover for stealth camping in the snow.

Great video with a lot of good comparisons. I have tried a few different types of bivvy bag and personally found that the British military ones were a bit claustrophobic. I now have the USGI Bivvy bag, with the side zip, and found it a lot better for my needs while camping.

I didn't have good success with my USGI MSS. I use the Brit bivvy, but turned over so the hood makes a face shield, as the coldest part of bivvy camping is breathing in cold air that the body has to heat up using calories to do so, while simultaneously dropping blood pressure. Now a buff or head over to cover my mouth does the trick, toasty all night. Thanx for watching....bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor years when i was in the us army, had a field exercise in winter. was odd man out in my platoon. so what i did was put my standard us army sleeping bag on my sleeping pad. crawled inside, than pulled my canvas shelter half on top of my bag. this gave me the warm air space inside a covered top.

I Love my bivi bags ! I have the Dutch army hooped made by Fecsca.. I changed the zip on the side but the top zip with bug net is too complicated for my sewing skills. I love it ! I struggle with it sometimes size wise ( zipping up my sleeping bag etc ) but its massive compared to my other bivi bags, Its just a case of lying there and star watching. Of course I could always use the velcro ad pop connectors. Great video Bex (as always mate )

I picked up a French army bivvy bag the other day, new un-issued, on ebay which was 60€ and which is also made by Fresca.. It is similar material to your Dutch one, but in the Central European camo.. it doesn't have the hoop and looks a bit narrower than the Dutch, but still more than ample room. Not used it yet, but will try this year... It comes with a weird pocket/hood and flap which can be used to pack it away... this is quite big and heavy and has buckles...I cut it off as it serves not real purpose as a hood, and adds a lot of extra bulk and weight. I would in 99% of occasions use a tarp anyway. It is nice quality even if it now weighs in well over 1kg.. The zip is the chunky plastic toothed type so not as fragile as the spiral sort...

Anybody know anything about Universal NATO Issue Military Bivvy Bags? The good, the bad or the ugly? I've seen one in Olive Green "Gore-Tex" for GBP42. Interestingly, there is a 3/4 length zip that runs down the middle of the topside, which should make getting in an out easier. There's also a built-in stuff sack that the bag folds up into, which I guess could double as a pillow. At 1.2kg, they’re a bit heavier than regular army bivvys. But they look roomy. Any insight would be welcome. Cheers

Great video and comparisons. Only got to it now :) As I am going to have a field training in late November or December put my eyes on a Dutch bivvy and wonder how low in temperature I can go with Carinthia Tropen and a Dutch bivvy with foldable foam mat? Thanks once again for your great videos!

So far I am not a fan of bivvy's & therefore don't have much experience with them, though I do see a weight/emergency advantage in that type of system. I tried a SOL emergency which I found very wet and uncomfortable. Yes it did keep me warm, bit no I didn't sleep much in it. Anyway it started to rip fairly quickly, so I got SOL Escape hoping it may be a little less wet and a bit more robust. I haven't slept in it yet, so I guess I should try it out sometime soon. I don't expect it to keep rain off, so I got a small DD Tarp-S. My thinking is to use the tarp for wind & rain protection. I think I'll try using the SOL Escape as a ground sheet for as long as I am warm enough and only get in it when it's too cold to sleep on top. Hopefully, minimising time inside the Bivvy & thereby minimising condensation. I am not aware of any other Bivvy as light and compact as the SOL ones, apart from the simple plastic bag types. Anyway, I guess I'll find out how that goes. I also have a Woobie blanket it could be used as a liner inside a Bivvy but it's a lot of bulk & weight for a single use thing. I am considering some modifications to make this more versatile. My intention is to use it as a double layer tabard so it can be worn as a long puffy outer garment, which would be nice on cold mornings & evenings. To do this, I would pit some press studs along the long edges so they can be folded in the middle to form a long tube. It could then be a bivvy liner bag, or a double layer strip. Now, making a 30cm cut across the middle layer & taping that cut of course, I then have a head hole in the middle, where the edges have the slit longways but the middle layer has it across. Thins means that slits around the neck are at right angle to each other, so you have at least 1 layer continuous covering the other layers slit, minimising heat loss at the neck. Then just put a belt around the waist so the front & back overlap at the sides, just like a tabard. This would keep the core warm but the arms would be a little exposed but you'd be wearing long sleave tops if it was that cold. Don't know if that explanation is clear, but the idea is to take this instead of a puffy jacket. It could be used as a blanket/quilt, a sleeping bag, a bivvy liner, a single layer poncho, a double layer tabard. Sure it's going to look a bit weird in public but for solo wilderness, I think it may prove quite versatile and enhance the bivvy sleeping system as well. Probably best if it's not camo if encountering other people. Anyway, I'm going to give it a go and see, I even have some 2 way zips to close the neck slit right up when used as a blanket of sleeping bag.

I have the Dutch Fecsca in large but find it just too short for me at 6ft, and very claustrophobic. Also got the British Army special forces one man shelter and find it a bit better than the Dutch, but still like a body bag. Not as yet tried a regular bivvy bag so something for the future. Plenty of great advice as usual. Happy new year Bex

as far as the issue bags go, on exercise i would use just a Bivi bag and roll mat spring/summer/autumn ... even up in the Brecon beacons, and just sleep in my clothes. After carrying sleeping bags was made compulsory (late 90s) i would put the sleeping bag in and use it as a mattress in all but the most coldest times of the year. IMO the issue bags are the dogs bollocks ... i tried some expensive ultralight Bivi bags but they all had more condensation. Best Bivi bag i have used is the US army MSS outer, because of the easy access/zip

I only managed +5C with issue Bivvy NO sleeping bag wearing softies as seen on the spring camp video, some time ago. The chill came from below, not the top section (convection fail), so will double up on foam pads, maybe push another 5-10 degrees. I am tempted to try the Savotta mat, but is only rated 3 season, (I know you don't do air pads) so have experimented with wrapping my HDF foam pad in a wool blanket envelope, with good success to freeze point to 8-9 hours. Used in conjunction with my silver backed reflector showed little improvement either. The weight of the wool blanket is be off set by not carrying a sleeping bag. Just thought I would share these findings with you, in case you wanted to experiment with replicating it (obviously using a ground sheet, as the wool blanket would freeze to the ground, if used directly) I am in the process of cutting and sewing a wool blanket envelope to fit the foam pad. Although I am filming the process, I may not publish it as a youtube video, hence me giving you a heads up on my research so far...Have a great new year....bex

@@bexbugoutsurvivor I recently dabbled with using a self inflating Matt again, it failed after a couple of trips, both via slow leak but I lost body heat straight through it, even on one occasion sleeping in a sheepskin parka (my legs were cold where ever they touched the Matt). I have on several occasions used a wool blanket as a sleeping Matt, folded right I found I could have 3 layers of wool. I used a poncho liner over the top as a blanket, it worked as a system. Have pondered with the idea of a canvas/wool/fleece bedroll set up, but have not fleshed it out ... maybe a wool and goretex bivi bag bedroll would be more suitable, (need to put some thought into it)

Sometimes I stick my pad in the bivvi and sometimes I stick it underneath. Depends on the temps, the weather the likeliness of my pad getting damaged by the terrain. I just do what works best for me in that particular situation. I've got one of those British MTP bivvies, it's a a love hate relationship, I love the rugged waterproofness of it, but that drawstring toggle setup 🤦🏻‍♂️ I think like you mentioned, the addition of a short zip would make it so much more practical 👍🏼

I too combine an air pad with a foam mat. Previously the foam pad acted as a puncture protector for the air pad. But I have had better success with upping the R value by switching the foam pad on top of the air pad, albeit leaving the air pad vulnerable to puncture.....kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXLbl2xsYqmNh9E

I often purchase kit from over seas, and I just need to bite the bullet and pay the import tax. Regarding those horrible reflective sheets, tape one to your tarp (open front A frame configuration) and get a long fire in front of you, you will be comfy for the night without a sleeping bag.
