My first concert I went to was Tyler the Creator’s CMIYGL tour in Worcester, MA. He thought he was in Boston and had a 5 minute convo with the guy who told him he was actually in Worcester. The production and energy of the concert was insane, full blown spectacle. He played a bunch of classics from all his albums, including SMUCKERS (one of my absolute favorite songs of his), and he was playing off the crowd so well. By the end, he was saying “the energy here tonight was wild, and I don’t really say that at all my shows. Y’all were great” and the whole arena went nuts. Best first concert I could’ve asked for. Edit: 2:16 That was the concert! He was arguing with the whole crowd where he was.

I saw Tyler’s set at Lollapalooza 2021 and everything was executed perfectly. The stage design and techniques, the different costumes changes between the bellhop, Baudelaire and Igor. The setlist with Tylers best songs without being too long, and Tyler’s energy. His fucking energy with his screaming and dancing. The crowd was turnt as hell and there was a crazy ass moshpit during New Magic Wand

My first concert was the DONDA Listening Party in Chicago. I was shocked on how amazing the whole thing was. If you want spectacular and extravagant live performances, for me that always comes to mind is Pink Floyd's The Wall Tour (1980-1981). Featuring giant inflatable puppets of characters from the album, a(n almost full-size ) model plane chrashing on stage, animated segments, and of course. The titular wall being built brick by brick through the show, eventually fully blocking the audiance's view of the band behind it. It then finally gets torn down at the end. Look up some footage of it, it's insane!

Last October I went to go see this avant-garde metal trio called Imperial Triumphant in my home town. If I were to guess, there probably weren't more than 80 people total attending it. Yet for the 50 minutes it lasted, I and nearly everyone else were completely transfixed by their presence. At points there were some decent attempts at moshing, but more than anything now one could deny how menacing and enthralling they were while performing; it demanded full attention. From their creepy gold masks, to the insane jazz drumming and blast beats, the crowd being doused with a champagne bottle they brought and the bassist sliding that same bottle across the fretboard, the whole experience was otherworldly, despite not even being 10 feet away from the stage. And to think, just an hour prior I had met all the members of the band, who were all kind enough to sign my poster. Hell, the frontman, Zach, was running the merch stand all by himself.

I went to the CMIYGL show in Detroit, and idk if anything will be able to top that. Not only was the performance the most beautiful thing i’ve ever seen live, but a ton of weird things happened there as well. Me and a couple of my friends just straight up stole some better seats than what we had bought, and we were somehow lucky enough to have a row to ourselves. We then realized that right behind us was Demetrius Harmon from vine, and literally right next to us was Babyface Ray. At the end, me and my friend kept blowing kisses to Tyler to try and get his attention, and he looked at us and blew one back. Best concert ever.

I went to a Denzel Curry concert on May 15th with Zay as an opener, and it was my first ever concert I actually went to. He performed around an hour, and included songs from Taboo, MMESYF, ZUU, Unlocked and Imperial. Some of my favorite moments from the concert were the entire crowd singing the hook of Black Balloons, him performing the fast part of Ultimate without a beat to back his rapping up, and when he noticed me in the crowd. I made the Taboo album cover from beads about 5 months ago and held it up during the concert. During Troubles, he pointed at random people in the crowd and noticed me holding it up, so he smiled down while pointing at me for a few seconds. The best part happened after the concert, however. I gave the security manager the album cover, who replied saying that he'd bring him out again. After 10 minutes of waiting, the manager told me to come with him so I ran backstage with him. Denzel had already received it, shook my hand, asked me: "Did you make that? That's cool." and also thanked me in English and German. Then I gave him the tickets but no one had a pen. A woman gave one to him but that didn't work well, so he said 'I'll be right back', sprinted into a nearby room and then came back within a literal second saying :'Alright, I found a pen!' After all of that, he signed the tickets, we shook hands again, he hugged me and I left the backstage area. Being there was amazing.

My first (and so far only) concert was Cake and Ben Folds in Boston. I was like 13, I don't remember what the venue was, although I do remember the opener was some band called Twin Peaks. Ben's part was pretty chill, but I remember that Cake gave some guy a tree. Like, he came up on stage and they gave him a tree. Or maybe they just gave him ownership of a tree not on the stage, I don't remember. So that was pretty fun. I'm going to see a They Might Be Giants concert in Portland later this year, hope that doesn't get postponed because Flansburg breaks even more ribs. On the subject of TMBG, I can't help but bring up this one concert in the 90s where the stage apparently collapsed with them on it. Just thought I'd mention that.

I saw Tool live in Louisville this year. It was amazing! We had pretty low seats and so I could hear everything just fine.. unfortunately before the show I had eaten some subpar pizza and my stomach was killing me. But I refused to go to the bathroom and miss this show that I had been waiting months for. So instead, I just sat down for 3 hours.. yeah. But the light show was great, and the crowd was *mostly* nice. We ended up leaving early cause my stomach aches had came back and I felt like I was gonna throw up. So we left in the middle of the second to last song. But it was an amazing experience and I really want to see them again.

I got to see The Protomen live about 10-ish years ago and they had a small venue, so they asked people to come onstage and be the chorus for some of the Act 1 songs as long as they knew the words and you better believe I got up there and had a great time. Love those dudes!

First concert I ever went to was a Rav concert and it was phenomenal. It was at a small venue and you were like, 5 feet away from the stage even in the back. Concert was mind blowing and I got to meet the artist.

Went to see Coldplay last month at State Farm Stadium and it was really fun. Before that, I went to two Trans Siberian Orchestra in 2019 and 2021 and were great too. Can't wait to see The Weeknd in 2 months!

Rammstein love is the most extravagant and over the top show i've ever seen. 10/10 would get fried by flamethrowers in the front row again and again

My favorite concert experience has to be seeing Phish on 10/23/21 in San Diego. It was my 4th time seeing them, and I had just traveled from my hometown of Phoenix where they played the night before (first time since 2003), and this was middle show before going up to LA to see them the day after. I could go on and on and on and on about how much this show meant to me, and I will do exactly that. Pre-show, the main talk around the community was because of the name of the venue, the North Island Credit Union Amphitheater. There just so happens to be a Phish song called NICU, and so there was a whole debate on whether or not they would play it or if it was way too obvious and all that shit. Little did we know how important that would be. Another thing worth mentioning is that I was in a box with about 6 other people. So Phish gets on, and they open with Fluffhead, which already probably should have been a sign of greatness, because Fluffhead is one of their most difficult and beloved songs. It wasn't a flawless performance of it, but 38 years into the band's existence we'll take a solid rendition. But then, during the last section of the song, they keep chugging along, past the point where they can end it normally. If you know anything about Phish, this might not seem that crazy, but this isn't supposed to happen in Fluffhead. They groove along for a few minutes until eventually go straight into the thing we should have all seen coming, NICU. Then NICU does the exact same thing Fluff did, go way beyond past the end of the song into the unknown, all while frequently returning to the NICU melody that (spoiler alert) we would all know very well by the end. After it had gotten to the point that it had certified itself as the best NICU ever played (this isn't supposed to happen in NICU either), the jam faded into the second ever Bye Bye Foot since 1997, a much welcome breather. Then they fired up an amazing Tube, getting out of the funk and getting into the blissful major key jamming they've gotten down to a science at this point (with some more NICU teases thrown in for good measure), a return to the former before the drop into the end of the song. Then they cruise through a great Slave To The Traffic Light (just an incredibly beautiful song), the slow version of Llama, and then ending the 1st set with Rise/Come Together, a song I usually fucking despise but in all honestly didn't matter to me that much in the moment, and listening back on recording it still doesn't really bother me. Oh yeah, and then a final NICU tease at the very end. Setbreak happens, then the 2nd set immediately got down to business with No Men In No Man's Land, which out of the five major jam pieces of this show, is definitely the least notable, but it's still very good and I love it when Phish gets a bit into spooky ambience. Smooth transition into Free, which like NICU and Tube, was one of the longest versions ever. This jam has a very similar structure to the Tube, with some (you guessed it) NICU teases, as they build off idea after idea before returning to the song. Joy took up the 2nd set ballad spot (no complaints, it's one of my favorite Phish ballads), and then they bust into Sand, which is usually a jam vehicle but this time the jam just serves as a nicely played into to Piper. This Piper is easily the most famous and beloved jam of the show, and the masses are exactly right. This motherfucking just keeps building and building into a crazy climax, before collapsing into a ginormous, ugly wall of evil sound. I will not over-exaggerate this, this thing was fucking LOUD at the show. It's probably my all-time favorite concert moment. Out of the depths comes Scents And Subtle Sounds. Perfect call, amazing song, and this version is just pure bliss. Perfect end to the second set. Then they go back on for the encore, and they play Lonely Trip, and allow me to add in some personal details. This song originated from a Trey solo album before it started being played with Phish last year. It immediately became my favorite song that debuted in 2021. They had just played it in Eugene on 10/20, and because that was the show before Phoenix, I thought that I wouldn't see it and it was off the table. Then they play it during the encore of the greatest concert I've ever seen, and I almost start crying out of happiness. Anyway, after that, they thank the audience, then Trey goes into greeting the other band members which then sets up an NICU pun, pretty adorable. Then the show ends with the perfect choice, Trey holding his guitar above his head at the end of First Tube. The next night at the Forum was probably a more fun experience (that show is on the complete opposite side of the Phish spectrum as this one), and I saw the band 3 times at the famed Deer Creek Music Center in Indiana earlier this month, and that was probably more fun too. But as for the quality of the music that was performed, this absolutely takes the crown. Jams out of songs that don't usually go that far, a rare one, incredible improvisational masterpieces, fun stage antics, all there. I don't think I'll ever see a concert as good as 10/23/21. And that's okay. That show was just too perfect.

I go to mainly metal and punk shows, and a lot of small underground shows in tiny venues, and I feel like the attitude towards openers varies so much from genre to genre. If a big or mid-sized metal tour is happening, there’s anywhere from 2-4 smaller opening bands that get taken on the tour. There’s tons of shows I’ve gone to just because of the openers, without even being a fan of the headliner. And contrasting the things I’ve seen at punk and metal shows versus shows in different genres, people in heavier music seem to give the openers so much more respect than people at a pop, folk, or indie show.
