How I make simple scenic bases for Bolt Action

Hello and welcome back to the channel! In this video I’m going to be showing you how I go about simple scenic bases that tie my individual teams together in my Bolt Action armies. The video is slightly longer than I would normally make as instead of just talking through the basing technique, I will be showing you how I go about making the bases and the materials that I use to achieve the effect.
In the video, I will be basing a Fallschirmjager medium machine gun team so that it ties into the rest of my German Bolt Action army. If you have seen any of my previous videos, I prefer to paint my armies to a tabletop standard but always think that a well based army can look fantastic on the tabletop. Hopefully the video will provide some hints and tips on making your own scenic bases for Bolt Action. If you find the video helpful, be sure to let me know!

That's awesome thank you and apologies for the delay in responding! The majority of the cork I use is from cork table mats and it is just over half an inch thick 😀👍

Hey Rob. Yes the cork that I use is mostly cork table mats. These can be picked up for not a lot of money and you normally get between 4 and 6 in a pack. It's also easy to 'halve' them if you want to make them a little bit thinner 😊

what size is the round and square base thanks

Hey Dion - the round base is one of the standard bases from Warlord Games and is 60mm in diameter. The square base is made from laser cut MDF and is 100mm x 100mm :)

Thanks Lawrence and welcome to the world of Bolt Action! In response to your question, no this cover is purely for making my miniatures and bases look interesting. To benefit from cover in the game, you need to use the scenery and cover that is on the tabletop 😀👍

Did I miss the part where you were painting the basing materials after you glued them on? 🤔

Hey Chris, thanks for your comment. It's been a while since I watched that video so I'll have to have a catch up! But if it helps, I'll outline how I go about painting the basing material. For the base in the example I use a more brown colour (Vallejo Burnt Umber is my standard go to brown) and I tend to water it quite heavily to allow it to really soak into the grit and the cork. When this is dry, I drybrush the base using the original colour with a small dab of Sunny Skintone. For the last highlight I add a touch of Ivory and apply this to the extreme edges of walls etc. For more urban basing, like my Stalingrad Germans, I tend to use a mix of Burnt Umber, Dark Rubber and Olive green as a base colour and then apply highlights in the same manner as the previous example. Hope that helps ☺

Top stuff! Glad it helps Chris. I guess you could use any colour that suited your base or where the army is based but with cork, I always use of drybrushing 😊
