Nancy shows how to do the free motion quilting in this eighth tutorial for the Great Basics quilt. Jump back to the beginning and watch the other videos in this series to create your own Great Basics quilt. In the last video, Nancy prepared for the free motion quilting by sewing straight lines to stabilize the quilt. She used her walking foot with invisible thread on her sewing machine to do the stabilizing quilting.
For the free motion quilting, Nancy uses the free motion foot. This foot has a spring to bounce up and down over the fabric while moving the quilt to sew the free motion designs. She recommends switching to a colored thread. She uses Superior Threads So Fine polyester thread on the top and pre-wound Superior SuperBOBs The Bottom Line Bobbins for the bottom. Schmetz's Top Stitch needles have a larger hole and shaft in the front so the thread breaks less often.
The book has examples of how to free motion quilt the nine patch block. She shows how she does it on her example of the Great Basics quilt in the pink colorway. Next she also shows how to free motion quilt the setting triangles; moving from one triangle to the next. There are additional design options in the book to free motion quilt the triangles.
Nancy moves to the setting square blocks. She does meandering free motion quilting in one of the blocks. The meandering design is a great option for a crib or twin size quilt and easy to do yourself. Another option for these blocks is to sew half circles. Nancy takes her Bohin chalk pencil and draws lines with her ruler from one corner to the other to find the center of a setting square block. This design creates four petals in the block.
Nancy starts at the bottom of the border and works her way backwards as she free motion quilts. She finds it easier to quilt into the empty space and she doesn't run into an area where she has already quilted. Take out the basting pins before starting. She free motions sews a loop design on one border. Another option is to sew "pebbles" or "olives" in the next border. The "pebbles" or "olives" can be different sizes. Either designs are great options to fill the border. The Great Basics book shows the designs to reference for your quilt.
Once the quilt is all quilted, a sleeve, label and binding can be added. Subscribe and bop the bell to be notify when this next video is available.
