As a UK citizen, the idea of annual reregistration is a weird one. Once a vehicle has been assigned a Registration Number, it has it for life, unless the owner decides to swap it for a personalised number.

In canada the driver is issued a registration. And he can apply that registration to any vehicle he wants (one at a time) ive personally owned 20 cars with one registration. The renewal is to ensure you pay tickets. If the auto renew comes up and you have an unpaid traffic or parking ticket the renewal will be held and youll receive a letter saying your tags are expired untill you oay the ticket.

In England, the AlphaNumeric registration plate stays with the same car, and doesn't need registering again. You can Buy a Private plate and change the cars number and then that doesn't need to be registered ever again! People try to find plate numbers that mean somethingto them, mostly not successfully, such as, cars nick names, Scoobie for a Subaru, SE16 CBL, for a football team, but no queeuing up at our equivalent to the US DMV.

When you apply for your renewal sticker (either a 1 or 2 year period) you needed to list the policy number and insurance company name. I don't know if this was ever checked/verified, but that's a different issue. One thing regular (1 or 2 year) registration protocols did was to keep an accurate track of the increasing mileage of the car. This helps to reduce the amount of odometer fraud as there is a good history of the mileage over time. (it's typically not the long term owner who commits odometer fraud, but rather flippers on the used market once that car is traded in and it goes through a few hands or a couple of auto auctions.) I think the stickers were not that onerous of a process, it raised funds from those that are actually using the service (road network)

At one point I had 4 vehicles with me listed as the owner because the scrap yards can't be bothered to do that paperwork. Took years for them to fall off the list when I'd get on the website to pay the registration for the 1 vehicle I actually had. Don't know if it works the same way in Canada but having registration fees be auto-payed here in the states would be infuriating. Once they take your money you won't see it again anytime soon if ever.

Automatic re-registration means uphill battles getting your money back when they bill you twice, or a week early every year, or bill you on a day when you don't have the cash in your account. It better be effin free. Vehicle Registration should be a one-time registration fee, that vehicle is yours until you unregister it. All that fee does is pay for DMV salaries, which are a total waste. Those people should be paid a negative wage lol
