Hands down She got the shaft from Mercury records I actually liked her foray into disco .. She lacked promotion and I suspect she resisted being sexualized Every fan needs to get a copy of the Its my party 5 CD set I'm not too keen on her only biography as the author left out a lot of things. Like her love of golf. She had her own cart with her name on it. I was hoping I'd actually learn more about her personal likes etc First half is ok but the last half is filler and agenda. It does have some great color pictures and a discography in the bac She had an amazing life. Too bad the author used the platform to indict America.. My lai had nothing to do with Lesley but the author choose to focus on the negative of the decade and ignored the fact it was the first time TV had shows in prime time for teens. Or that the first half of the decade featured strong women artists including African Americans American politics had little to do with Leley that lived a private life. Her fall from grace was due to a heartless industry and that they gave songs to other artists Like Groovy kind of love and Wedding bell blues

I grew up very closeted. As a early 2000s soul, when I was introduced to Lesley Gore, I absolutely love her music. "You Don't Own Me" is a beautiful song, which represents how you can stand up to people who put you down. Just like how I did to my bullies and people who were homophobic towards me. This woman right here changed my life. And her songs motivated me yo come out the closet, and reveal I am in fact LGBTQ. She is without a doubt the best 60s singer. Fight me. Thank you, Lesley.

To be fair Hollywood is still filled with closeted stars Phobic means fear Fear has little to do with those that object. The entire Islamic world objects so I take offense to her biographer to insist your only opposition is coming from American Christians I personally don't care who people sleep with 😀😀 My objection is it being thrust to the forefront of every issue I can go all day without talking about my sex life.. I'm sorry you had problems , but try to broaden your outlook too. Its ok for everybody to have an opinion. EXAMPLE not everybody is into bondage or adult diapers 🤣🤣 Am I a bigot because I don't like those fetishes? Only if I try to stop you and we are not stopping you from sleeping with anybody.. 😀😀 I mentioned current day closet persons in Hollywood... They know even in this modern age fans will drop them as many fans live vicariously thru their Favorite stars Like action film stars Or fans that lust for stars they think are like minded.. Recently Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira came out. She lost fans but not me. I always suspected she was based o her friends but as I say I'm still a fan and glad she is Happy. It's not Like I was going to marry her🤣🤣 I have Loved Lesley since the 60s and still do So we straights are not as bad as you might think I donate to charities recycle and support wild fife programs ... Perhaps instead of us all pushing our sex lives we all work to find common ground. Good luck to you😀😀

OK you got the same come out of the closet but I’m a tell you right now just because someone is a rumor doesn’t make it true and they need to come out when they’re ready to come out and that when people say they should and she can’t come out now because she passed away but at the same time like I said just because people say they are don’t mean they are don’t believe everything you hear nothing the same as anything bad with it no it’s not because I don’t know why people make a big deal about it and who they love is none of nobodies business and I don’t think people should come out the closet at all or whatever because that’s your business you know you don’t have to be afraid to show who you love male or female I don’t matter

What POSSIBLE difference could it make to her singing ability? Elton John is gay, no one seems to care, Barry Manilow, although he has never admitted it publicly (I don't think he has) is rumoured to be gay and countless others. I guess for Lesley with her American Sweetheart girl-next-door image, it may have been more difficult for some people to accept, but gay people are just people. I does not affect vocal talent, if it did trust me no one would be on Broadway.

I'm only 14 years old, but i absolutely love music like this and the period of time when Lesley and other singers started their career and became "trending". Sometimes i thought of myself: i'm living in the wrong generation. But now i say the opposite, because at least i can listen to every masterpiece of that time whenever i want to:) I'm really sad because half of those singers are gone and i can't meet them, or at least go to one of their concerts or something. This is one of the reasons why i'm afraid of getting older. (i'm sorry if i texted some things wrong)

Buddy, you can like a generation without living in it. No one appreciates their own current generation. Countless teenagers love the fashion and energy of the 20th century, you’re not special. You aren’t more intelligent because you appreciate a time you know nothing about and see it through your romanticized lenses

@1959buddyh - WHAT do you want her to look like - 23? She's a great performer, she hasn't had everything lifted and snipped and injected and to me she looks like an attractive mature woman who is a GREAT performer. At least she looks natural and comes across as well adjusted, intelligent and extremely musically talented. To say that someone "looks horrible now" is a worthless comment. I hope some Lesley fans out there will give me a thumbs up for saying this.

Ms. Gore was born Lesley Sue Goldstein on May 2, 1946, in Brooklyn. She grew up in Tenafly, N.J., eager to become a singer. She had just turned 16, a junior in high school, when her vocal coach had her make some piano-and-voice recordings. Those demos, with a youthful brightness in her voice, reached the producer Quincy Jones, who was then an A&R man at Mercury Records. He became her producer and mentor

It always blows my mind hearing these singers and performers reminiscence on how the music industry was back then, it seems just so much more authentic and genuine. Back then, if you really could sing and had talent it showed. You weren't given auto tune, or lip syncing throughout an entire performance, or the entire song being created with a computer and guy with a switchboard, it was all real, and it showed. Now, everything is so heavily "Photoshopped" and tuned to the peak of perfection, it broadcasts an unrealistic image on what you need to be if you're ever going to be a professional performer. It's disheartening hearing a seasoned legend say if they were trying to get a start in today's music industry, they probably wouldn't ever get in.

@@Jack.Strait She was talking just about musicians at first, during the bit about amazing new talent... I'm not convinced about today's singers (although maybe it's because of the crap songs that their voices don't impress me...?). I mean, why do we need autotune now?
@UpsideDown853
@UpsideDown853 4 жыл бұрын
Dude, she literally was talking about how it was hard for women back in the day and you're here talking about: "oh the good old days where things were authentic." No? Needing to keep up with the boys, isn't being authentic. It's doing what you have to because you love singing. AS SHE SAID. Also, can we stop hating on autotune? I don't favor it by any means, but at the end of the day it's still a tool. People just use whatever sounds they can to make something new or express what they feel. In a very technological world, I think it fits to incorporate into music what people 'feel' around them. If you hate it, don't listen to it. It might not suit you because it represents a different experience. That's fine.

What puzzles me is why haven't any of todays artists,like Girls Aloud,Pussycat Dolls ,Gabriella Cilmi etc..covered her songs.They lend themselves so well to pop music in 2010.Shit..I'd love to hear Amy Winehouse cover her stuff. Huge talent and she seems like a really nice person as well.Thats always a bonus

I remember Leslie Gore in the early/mid 60's on TV and radio when I was 7, 8 and 9 yrs old ... I loved it.. So for like 50 yrs. I didn't pay much attention to Leslie Gore, and didn't realize that she still performed all those years...till now... Now Im 61 and I still never ever seen anyone who sang like Leslie Gore. And there have been tons of killer woman singers in rock and pop, (and country) over the years.. This girl was just a 16/17 year old teenager back then and she's got total control right out of the box. The FIRST real girl of the ROCK era, along with Ronnie Specter.. Hit after hit in the mid sixties right from the word go.. A real pioneer for woman in Rock, and Rock Music in general.. A True Superstar beyond Superstardom along with The Beatles, The Stones, and Bob Dylan. I never noticed all this when I was a kid (especially with all the great music around in the 60's). But now that I'm older, and watching all her performances from over the years, here on You Tube, it's like WTF....God Bless you Leslie Gore...frankfromthe70's

@Davy, I always thought that too, in fact back in the day I would confuse the two of them sometimes.

What fantastic taste in singers she had. No idea she was a jazz buff!

Lesley, thank God for that convergence of events, with your having a good vocal coach and having Quincy Jones within earshot. Lucky for all of us. If only they still made records with large groups of skilled musicians and professional background singers.

@AndrewKoala Yes, Lesley is a very warm, friendly, generous person. After each of her concerts, she comes out to the lobby and meets her fans. She takes the time to talk with them, have photos taken...no matter how many fans are there....she chats with everyone...no matter how tired she may be.

@Tunz909 Bear Family Records has a 5-cd box set of all of Lesley's songs recorded for Mercury Records. Now out of print, it does show up on ebay from time to time. It contains her foreign releases (French, German, Italian) as well as the different versions of some songs. Well worth the price if you are a die-hard fan of Lesley's.
