Suggested update: once you get under the light, take the mesh tray to the sink turn it upside down (Root side up) and flush with gentle water stream for about a minute. This will get all seed hulls and funky mold spores off your grow. Better than H2O2.

A few pro tips for growing on dehydrator mats: #1. If you're growing smaller seeds all you need to do is double the mats to keep them from falling through. It's that simple. #2. Adding food grade Epsom salt to the water boosts germination and growth. Ratio is 1 tablespoon to 1 gallon of water. #3. The best way to prevent fungus and mold is before it starts. For the first spraying of the seed use a combination of food grade hydrogen peroxide 3% and water. Ratio is 1z FGHP to 20oz water. Best to just keep it in a separate spray bottle for the initial spray. After that just spray with regular - preferably distilled - water.

Great Video! "For the smallest seeds use a 27x25 thread count per inch dehydrator screen" (according to Brent from "Hydroponic Gardening and More with Brent" ) also on KZbin... He uses a 15 x11 thread count per inch screen for most seeds (esp Brassicas) ... but the 27x25 for lettuces, amaranth, mustard ect... Glad to have found a solution for a reusable medium! Thanks for showing how easy it is to clean... God bless!

I love it! I love it! I love it! You have made my day. You have made my YEAR! This is what I have been aiming for. I do both sprouts and microgreens and have thought for a while that maybe a hybrid approach would work well. (I am new at indoor growing.) And that is exactly what you did. You treated it like sprouts for the first four days (typically, rinse two or three times a day), then treated it like microgreens. Bravo times ten. Wish I could give it a hundred thumbs up. I think if I had very small seeds, I would put a layer of cheesecloth on top of the dehydrator screen. I would have to sacrifice that after one grow, but most seeds wouldn't need it. Question: do you use 3% hydrogen peroxide? Have you tried 12%? I would love more videos growing on screen for sure.

Looking at timestamp 3:30, the roots are a mix of normal white and fuzzy white. The fuzzy roots are air roots - air roots pull oxygen from the air. When you added so much water to the bottom tray, many of those air roots ended up underwater where they can't work and die. If left very long, you would see obvious root rot. I think just those few days was enough to encourage the mold.

Congrats on hitting the 50K mark! Your videos have taught me a lot and motivated me to experiment. I have been experimenting with those Amazon trays and using screens on them. Sango Radish seeds seem to be large enough to grow directly on the white mesh tray with no intermediate medium. But as you said, small seeds like broccoli would fall through so a screen with smaller holes is ideal. So far so good. Would love to see more experiments with the screens using more difficult seeds like possibly cilantro and fennel?

What I like about using mesh (I'm doing an experiment now with growing parsley (very small seed) on a woven placemat, is being able to eat the whole product - including the roots. According to some research, the roots may contain value that does not exist in the rest of the plant.

Are reusable mats really worth the extra labor/time? Seems to me that it takes far longer in labor than say $.50 cents in media like coir or potting soil to have to clean them.....asuming you do a good job of keeping such media off your sprouts and then not have to spend time cleaning them. Plus composting the root systems is also useful and not entirely a waste of money. Coir or the like could even be more cost effective if such compost is used to grow other things in a garden.....

K Baker....We were dealing with mold for over 1 year. We tried EVERYTHING! Then I purchased an Ozo-Pod 10 from Roving Blue - produces ozone from water - not air. Set to a timer, we now have ozone available anytime.....and.....no mold! You need the test kit to get the ozone solution down.....but it is all quite simple. Improves germination and growth rate. It also enabled us to secure a wheatgrass account and the wheatgrass juice tastes just great! We eat the wheatgrass raw throughout the day and it too taste great (at 3-4"). We surely threw out close to a 1000 flats of wheatgrass trying to find a solution and we found it.....so simple!
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 4 жыл бұрын
@@cwn03 wow.... super interesting. We're going to have to look at that. Are you creating a reservoir of water with the Ozo-Pod 10, then using that to water with? Do you have to use it immediately after producing the ozone?
@cwn03
@cwn03 4 жыл бұрын
@@OnTheGrow @On The Grow Yes....our ozone rez (15 gals) is separate from our nute rez.....we switch back and forth as needed - we are still learning. The timer maintains the desired ozone level. There is a time frame to use up the ozone solution. Believe me, there is nothing complicated about it. The OzoPod & test kit run about $240 - that's the hard part - but for us - it's like winning the lotto with the wheatgrass account we were able to secure.

FWIW: I have used those exact trays for a few months now, and I don't put any where near that much water (I water twice a day) in the bottom and I don't use H202. The only time I've had trouble with mold is when I try to get more than one harvest from one planting. Exception: one other time I had cilantro in Coco Coir that I think I kept waaay too wet, because I did get mold that time as well.

Thank you for sharing! Yeah, it seems like there are about 8 different varieties of these same trays that all have different dimensions. That’s the issue with so many people importing and selling from different random manufacturers... If you roots can make it down into the reservior, there is no need for so much water! But as you can see in our situation, all the roots weren’t reaching, so we had to get the water to touch the medium otherwise the crop would dry out... We are still practicing with them :) Thanks again for sharing!

As I read in a comment below, once the roots are into the mesh, you can reverse it and clean the hulls, so the risks of moisture are greatly dinished. And after your harvest, you can put the roots aside, rinse them and eat the raw or as a green smoothie, so it's zero waste. Roots are as good as the rest, what do you think of that?

How do you like this grow medium compared to the stainless mesh?
@RavenWillowZ
@RavenWillowZ 3 жыл бұрын
The mesh screens that came with my Excalibur Dehydrator are not as flexible as what appears in this video. I do not see a link to these mats in your description. Please post.

We are actually releasing a new video on reusable grow mediums next week! We strongly suggest using a 304 grade stainless steel mesh and we will put some links in the video when we post it. The reason we don’t love the dehydrator mesh is that once you cut it, it can harbor bacteria in the cloth part of it. I think we have them still listed on our storefront through under grow mediums : www.amazon.com/shop/onthegrowfarms

When you say to mix 2 tablespoons of 3% H202 to a liter of water, the dilution is well below 3%. I'm new at this so please forgive me but I sprayed 3% (35% diluted 12:1 water : HP) onto the seeds. Is that to strong or just over kill?

Did you say to mist the food safe hydrogen peroxide directly on the microgreens to prevent mold?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the seed hulls will generally start to mold a bit, which is natural because they start decomposing when the sprouts emerge in the moist environment. H202 breaks down into harmless water and oxygen molecules after killing off most potential pathogens.

Would broccoli be too small for this screen?
@OnTheGrow

We had mustard in this which is similar in size of seed and 99% stayed in the mesh traps :) We are going to experiment with 304 stainless steel mesh screens too so that we can get finer mesh for smaller seeds.

Thank you!! The Dehydrator mat doesn't retain any water, and allows the roots to pass through very easily, whereas the micro mat retains a lot of water, yet the roots can't really get through...
