In cold winter conditions staying insulated from the ground is crucial. If you are prepared you will bring an insulated mattress of some kind. If you are not or something happens to your gear you may need to improvise. Building a raised bushcraft bed is an excellent option to protect you from the ice cold ground. Add some heated rocks from the fire and it really steps it up a notch.

The details may sometimes seem normal and somewhat mundane to you or others. To someone somewhere, those details that we have acquired over time and hardship are worth their weight in gold. Survival, "self-preservation," is the highest law.🔥

Wasn't expecting that! From the thumbnail i thought you were going the Jeremiah Johnson route I like this better in that you can refresh the heat throughout the night. With buried coals its highly unlikelyyoull get the right amount to last the night, the right amount of soil on top.( to much and you dont feel the heat, t o little and you get a rude awakening). At least the first few times. Im gonna have to try it this winter, thanks!.

Great idea with the heat retaining rocks, same thing folks did who had fireplace but nothing in bedrooms so they heated and took them in bed with them My experience with heating rocks is to not use rocks possibly saturated with water as they can explode, steam is powerful

I tried it out and came to this conclusion. Hot stones under the bed get cold too quickly. The best thing was to dig a trench and make a big fire with stones in it, when it burns down then shovel at least 15 cm of earth over the hot stones .....otherwise you'll burn your ass :-), it holts the hole night

I always have a multi-tool on me regardless. If I was building a shelter in the ground like you, I'd want the shovel, bonus if I didn't have to carry the extra weight (conveyance). More than likely, I'd just have to find a way to get by with a multi-tool and fixed knife and construct an improvised digging implement out of a stout stick.
@larrywright907
@larrywright907 7 ай бұрын
a bit of wire wrapped around each rock, would facilitate easy in and out of fire as well as easy in and out of beneath bed frame! still wouldn't go out without a digging implement, multi tool and a bit of wire(snares, rock moving, etc). good info on staying warm in cold temps, -35 to -46 might be a bit much though!

In the book Robinson Crusoe he had a hard time making himself a shovel ; it's hard to recreate in nature , but you could always just use a digging stick . A knife or multi-tool which has a saw and a blade could be used to fashion a digging stick along with a wide range of other things ; I think the multi-tool would be a better choice between the two [ especially if it's a Leatherman ] .

The book Robinson Crusoe was inspired by the true story of a fellow named Selkirk who was truly marooned for a long period on an Island that had in turn been named Selkirk Island ; which has since been dubbed Robinson Crusoe Island . Making a wooden shovel would be laborious if you were limited in availability of tools , and compared to a metal one it would be highly inefficient .@@user-McGiver
