My granddad, born in 1908 in New Jersey, USA, said he owned an Indian motorcycle when he was teenager. Probably looked a lot like some of these wonderful racing bikes. One of his favorite stories was having his brakes fail while descending a steep hill in his hometown. To stop his bike, he ended up crashing into a big, thorny blackberry bush. He laughed when he told this story. RIP, grandpa, you're greatly missed.

Reminds me of a kid in elementary school, mid 60’s we all called Fat Pete. Obnoxious mouthpiece broke his chain at the top of a hill, went squealing like a pig through cross traffic and launched about 20’ into the blackberries! It took the fire department to extricate his fat sorry ass out of that Venus fly trap. But his YAP never missed a beat!🤣🤣🇨🇦

You never know, Ken Fox might even give you a ride round the Wall on the handlebars! I have his private number if you need it, and I can share with you through the usual messaging system. 😉

As a kid my dad took me to Tiffan Ohio for an annual Indian motorcycle show . We drove all the way from Chicago to Ohio on an Indian Chief 1948 , 80 cu , bored and stoked . It had a " buddy seat " , which is by no means comfortable . My butt still hurts at 58 . They would have a projector playing vintage films of wood tracks , and hill climbing . I wonder if it's still active ? This was back in1978ish . After , we would go to Write & Patterson AFB museum in Dayton Ohio . I sure miss my father . It was one subject we shared in common . Antique motorcycles and planes . We even had a 1939 Waco UPF-7 and an old Sparrow Hawk biplane , converted into a low wing . Both won prizes at Oshkosh airshow , in the antique category . He was something my dad .

I love the style of these bikes. Huge inspiration for me personally. I made one in very similar style from an old bicycle and a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine. I was 14 years old when I built it. I was clocked going 70 mph in a 35 from a highway patrol. The officer was so intrigued he let me go telling me to go home slowly. I rode it to school for 4 years. It was my first motorcycle I’ve ever built and ridden. Prototyping stage was interesting . I’ve gotten the thing 80mph here and there complete with stock bicycle brakes, forks , tires, and wheels. Talk about excitement. Bicycle tires are completely worn out in 200 miles. Let alone the chain popping off the sprocket, locking the rear wheel and skidding about missing bushes, ditches, and barbed wire fences. Creativity is so important, it’s life itself. Keep riding for life.

The splinters were said to be caused by acud being used to clean the pul off the boards, which would make the wood splinter. Wonderful bike - 8 valve V twin with the heads and cylinders each cast as a single piece. Get your head around that ! No exhaust pipes - flames come straight out of the head so the rider had to have really thick leathers. No brakes and external total loss lubrication (pump it yourself with a plunger attached to the side of the tank. Frame like a bicycle on steroids and skinny tires doing about 100 mph. terrifying sport !

I love the old board track racing and the bikes. I wanted Craig Jones to build me a Royal Enfield bike based upon a board tracker, & styled like an Indian Scout Wall Of Death bike with pics of already converted Enfields as a guideline.. But he always made excuses for everything I asked of him. Maybe he wasn't experienced enough to make a flat tanker with downtube of frame over the top of the tank etc, and an authentic fully & working leaf spring fork.. But anyway, that's all behind me now and being a Christian, I have forgotten about this bad communication, as his Mother was unknowingly to me ill at this time, and I was on medication that wasn't agreeing with my way of thinking. I've got my dream bobber now, which ironically has one of his rigid conversions! A great and very interesting upload Paul. As usual, your productions are absolutely Top Notch, and well worthy of TV broadcast. Well done!

Thanks for the doco! Did you know that many of these tracks were designed so the riders or drivers could drive around a full lap without using the steering mechanism? It is known as the Searle Spiral Easement Curve and enabled enormous speeds at the time. Faster than any conventional track, which in turn led to carnage on a regular basis…

I grew up near Altoona. There was a cool old duffer, Mr. Miller, on my paper route (around 1980). He would tell me stories of going to the board track and watching the carnage of the racing there. I wish I was old enough at the time to appreciate his first hand accounts.
