Well, he "sold" them, instead of hiding it. And "someone" must have told the tax authorities. Maybe the ex-wife, maybe the "friend". As a former tax accountant I can confirm that in many places if you don't sell assets at market value, you will often still get taxed as if you did ("non-arms length transaction").
