Definition isn't all encompassing, dictionaries are interested in the history of words and their uses, the literal semantics. Linguistics is much broader and what pushes evolution in language. To have linguistic intelligence is to effectively understand what someone is trying to say. Like the other guy said, no one cares (if someone uses a term while meaning otherwise) but at least be right when no one cares.

Adventure Time is my favorite show of all time and I've watched it multiple times, it was refreshing and fun to experience somebody watching these episodes for the first time.
