@@bobert8125 in the case of freediving, you can go as deep as you want, so long as you can hold your breath. A lot of fishers that hunt scallops, muscles, and bottom feeders freedive because of the ability to ascend and descend quickly. Tank diving is much more complex. You can stay under for significantly longer, but there’s a process in getting down to lower depths. With any gas mixture, it’s recommended that you equalize your pressure every 5-10ft you descend (by plugging your nose and blowing air out through your ears). Most recreational divers use an air mixture, which is 79% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. This can only sustain you above depths of 130ft (40m) though, as the mixture is highly toxic - the nitrogen becomes narcotic - at depths below 184ft (56m). Extended/repetitive divers use a mixture called Nitrox (up to 40% oxygen), but still cannot go below 184ft. Technical/deep divers use a Trimix of oxygen (21%), nitrogen (44%), and helium (35%), allowing them to descend to 197ft (60m). Any deeper requires a Hypoxic Trimix, in which most of the nitrogen (20%) and oxygen (10%) is replaced with helium (70%). Hypoxic mixtures allow divers to descend to 328ft (100m). Both of these mixtures require extensive training and are hardly ever available to recreational divers.
