I just posted my OP-1f for sale the other day. I passionately hate the workflow and sequencers. The final straw for me was realizing that the OP-1f refuses to be sequenced by my Oxi One, so I can't even workaround the garbage internal sequencers. This OP-XY looks way closer to what I wish the OP-1f was, but at this point, I'm not giving TE another dime.

@@LainDoesNotExist I’m confident in my skill with other gear that I enjoy using more. I’m definitely not a keyboard player, so I can cop to that skill issue. But you can’t tell me that the TE sequencers follow the same logic of more professional sequencers like Elektron. My time is limited, and I don’t aspire to git gud at everything. There are other issues that have nothing to do with my skill- like, the Field straight up not working with a device like the Oxi One (over Bluetooth MIDI or USB-C). A $2000 device should be able to play nice with other gear, especially 2+ years after release. Cruise the forums, and you’ll see cute comments like “the field doesn’t like to recieve clock from other devices,” as if that were even kind of acceptable for a premium device. Have emailed both TE and Oxi about this, no fix in sight.

Good video. If anyone is interested in this, for the same amount of money you can get a Digitakt, SQ64, and pretty much any boutique synthesizer that you like the sound of, and you will have so much more capability and still have all the portability. I am sure that this is a wonderful instrument and if money was no object, I would get one in a heartbeat. But for most of us, I think, our money is really important consideration, and we live in a time where there are so many amazing options that something at this price point is out of reach. I mean, you can buy a MacBook Pro for this price and most people given the choice couldn’t even consider this. But I love the video and I always love the quality of your production.

After this video, I’m actually tempted to get one now. But can anyone offer some honest and viable alternatives? A single box with a screen, sampling, arranging, better synth engines and glitch effects. Digitakt 2 comes to mind but I don’t like Elektron’s workflow. I’ve used OP-1 several times and I enjoy the workflow, and the better synth engines than XY. Deluge is vastly more powerful in sequencing, but again the workflow is a bummer and internal engines are weak. I don’t exactly need a sound design tool, but an arranger with a quick/smooth workflow.

OP-WTF If they don't port at least some of these features into the OP-1f, a $2,000 device, I'd advocate against investing in this ecosystem. It's one thing to sell a product WAY above market price and advertise "many more features to come in the form of updates". But to drop an even more expensive product in place of those updates the consumer was promised, is a decidedly anticonsumer practice.

I’m so over 64 step limits in high end groove boxes. Elektron finally moved past it, everyone needs to. 128 is a lot more flexible. I know you can slow the rate of the patterns into even divisions but then you run into the problem where each step is 2x or 4x longer and you need to start over either removing quantization or nudging steps off the grid if you want any of the in-between steps

Just about everything about the XY is extremely well executed. If you asked me, I'd agree with most of the decisions made. Re-using the milled aluminium case of the OP-1? Clever! Only having to change the interface PCB while keeping the screen, volume LED's, speaker, battery? Perfect! Page view, screen. Built-in MIDI and analog interface, improved engine, sequencer, tracks? Yes! However, dropping the visual aspect of the OP-Z feels like a cop-out. I LOVED the DMX compatiblity. It was such a unique feature. I would have liked integration with the OP-Z iphone app to ensure continuity. And that price is just something else. The OP-Z was a very competitive choice in its segment thanks to the comparatively low price. I understand that the pricing isn't taken out of thin air and this thing is undoubtedly expensive to make, but it really is prohibively expensive compared to the OP-1. The OP-1 doesn't really have competitors in the same way the OP-XY has, and I think it would have been a catch for only slightly less money. At this MSRP however, there are simply far better ways to spend your cash if you want to get grooving.

This is definitely not hate and won't complain about the price, just a thought here. I love the interface and the sheer power, it's really the one box I'd want to turn into a workhorse but wonder if TE or any company will make a similar device that's not so miniature. I always thought it wouldn't be far-fetched for TE to have larger versions of the OP-1, OP-Z, etc. Understanding perfectly they enjoy the miniaturization part and it's a big part of the idea, I still wonder if there's a market for bigger versions of these instruments. I wish I could pay TE for doing it. Just porting that technology and badass design into bigger boxes. You could even have a version that's bigger but still fits in a backpack and then a third version with full-size keys. How awesome would that be? For people who like some sort of integrated keyboard controller, for similar power the choice is currently between OP-XY and MPC Key 37, which is pretty cool too but completely different in terms of workflow and design intention. It does look good. The price? Its hard to swallow. It's not out of my budget, but I have a hard time buying something when I feel like the company is grossly overcharging, which is exactly what is happening here. I'm tempted though.

I watched one of your OP1 Field posts where you said that TE had told you they are committed to updating the Field for at least 10 years. Do you think this is still true now that they've brought out the XY?

the screen is in color, as can be seen from the red numbers that appear at the beginning. I think TE wanted to keep the grayscale because the machine is black.

My favourite thing about TE is how angry people get at their prices, it's like people think they're entitled to cheap stuff. It's a real insult to their ego because they can't afford a piece of gear, even though literally every other segment of music tech and hell, every kind of commodity. has their high end luxury side. Get over yourselves. Good stuff, well made, well design AND small, cost money.

No it's not quality or the design, it's just inflated prices. TE overvalue thier items and it appeals to a particular audience and that's fair enough, just don't pretend it's the rright value for everyone.

This isn't a luxury item. It's a silly, barely usable thing for influencers who produce no music to fleece people like you. I can easily afford it, but I won't ever buy it; it offers nothing for this price.

Wished they'd skipped using the OP-1 case and made it slightly larger, that would have killed. Still prohibitively expensive for most at 3 or 4 times the price of an MPC Key 61 for instance.

Yeah it's expensive AF but the interface is just badass. The brain and step components and sound engines are killer. There's never been this complete and slick a sampling groovebox. But still so damn small. This power deserves a larger box, at least another version of it in a bigger case.

07:50 I always loved the saturated colors of the OG-1. The OP-1f felt like a step down with it's dull and depressing color theme. The black/white theme feels a bit less depressing and more stylistically coherent, but I sure miss the colors a ton

@ you hit it spot on. I originally was an OP 1 field hater because of the price and all of its limitations. The thing is you kinda need to be a good musician to be good at the OP 1 which I now appreciate after buying the OP 1 field recently. I already have a DAW and midi keyboard to do all the fancy stuff. I have no regrets. Trying to sell my op z now so I can upgrade 😎

Most people in the comments should *never* look up prices for instruments. It will *blow* their minds. Sarcasm aside, Thanks for the Overview! Much appreciated! I absolutely love my OP-Z to this day, despite its flaws in build quality over time. And while the op1f didn't really tempt me to upgrade over my op1, this one does more so. I had planned to get the TP7 in abit, but seems like priorities have just shifted a bit.
