the craziest part is the hardware doesn’t even try to justify the price. just regular (aka cheap) converters if not bad ones like the akais, nothing special said about the sound quality (sounds cheap digital as hell as the ops ? ). boutique item for hipster producers to post videos and never release a single good song made on it. too much money on marketing and aesthetic designs and no money on sound.

Honestly I think for people looking for a portable, hands on solution an iPad is so hard to beat. I bought a second hand 3rd gen 12.9" pro for £500 about 5 years ago. Setting aside the fact that it's basically a computer and can do general productivity and entertainment things, it's also a DAW, with an entire AU ecosystem, a groovebox, a drum machine, a synth, a sampler, either as an external audio source in my studio or as its own standalone sketchpad/idea starter. The only thing it's missing is physical controls, and you can solve that with a USB-C hub + any controller you fancy. And an audio interface if you want to record your voice or instruments. But yeah, 2300 would get you a brand new PC laptop (or a refurb'd MBP) plus a Maschine+ and a full DAW of your choice. So you can work fully portable and then finish the songs off at your computer. I've seen some cool videos with the XY, and it sounds good. But ultimately they just amount to fun little jams. If it were 500, it'd shift so many units. But I feel like they're choosing to paywall it behind a brand tax.

On paper the Ipad is hard to beat - until you try and make music on it! And then dealing with dongles, camera connection kits, having to tap glass, battery flaking out, 3rd party audio routing apps. Nah
@PaulOrtiz17 күн бұрын
@@197979jones tbh I've not had any trouble with that. I have a low profile USB C hub (kinda sits flush against the side of the iPad) with headphone out, HDMI, a USB type A and a type C for charging. I use it with a knockoff keyboard + trackpad case, got the pen as well which is nice for note editing. No audio routing apps required anymore as 99% of them are AUv3. So you just run it all in Logic, Cubasis, etc. As many instances as you like (or until you run out of juice!). Back when it was inter-app audio it was indeed an absolute nightmare. Put me off iOS music for years!
@197979jones17 күн бұрын
@@PaulOrtiz Thats fair enough. The most fun i had with an ipad was with the OXI ONE sequencer. It connects beautfully with the ipad via bluetooth. OXI gives the tactile element (as well as being a great sequencer) and basically the ipad just becomes a very efficient sound module. Then just route/record the OXI to the DAW on ipad

I appreciate the reality check here; all the people who got one for free are understandably quite excited, heck I would be. But in reality it is not something that is going to be for everyone, it has many limitations (4 bars, 8 tracks, 8gb mem, etc), but does some unique interesting things plus has the portability (and style) factors. But it's definitely important to take some time to actually think of options, and unless you have a ton of excess money and portability is a must. I don't remember if you mentioned but you could also get the Digitone 2 and Digitakt 2 brand new and still have an extra almost $500, for another example.. Anyway, I do like to joke about TE when they release stuff like this, but I fully understand the hype and I think it's quite cool myself, even if I would never get one.

I own the Deluge, love the Deluge. But the Deluge's synths just don't sound very good. And nobody quite knows why. Rephazer has some great multisample libraries that are a labor of love. And Boards Of Deluge has pushed that thing as far as it will go. But it still has this very particular washed out thin sound. It's hard to get like a great supersaw out of it, for example. Does it have something to do with the reverb? Something to do with the filters? I don't know. But it's real.

The amazing thing with the OP-XY is not being contained within its eco system. It embraces other FX units/pedals etc. Its pretty nuts you can send individual (or multiple) tracks from the OP-XY to other FX units and then route it back into the OP-XY. Achiving that with a laptop would require an extra bulky mixer, a bulky interface, wires etc. That feature alone makes it a brilliant piece of kit to compose with.

For instance I have trouble getting the synth sounds I want from my M8, but I love how portable it is, so sending the MIDI notes to a VST when I am ready to use it for a track is something I do a lot.

I think the TE hate has been brewing for a while due to a confluence of poor decisions. The poor build quality on several of their products was frustrating. If you ever have had to deal with their customer service, extremely frustrating. And then the price tag on the field series us just prohibitively expensive for many. A lot of people got started on pocket operators or an op-1 or op-z. Watching this company go this direction is supremely frustrating. It would be one thing if the products were just bad. But the idea of a beefy op-z with a built in screen and without the build quality issues seems like a piece of kit i could really use. But i just can't justify the cost. I need to invest in a PA system for some shows i want to host. I'll probably spend less on a solid PA system than the cost of a new OP-XY. And thats ridiculous. I also worry that other companies will follow this pricing model if its successful. And that would be a huge bummer.

I love gear, and have alot of it. Too much actually. The question is not in the gear but in the artist. With electronic music, anyone can practically play any gear. This is unlike traditional instruments - I can play the bass, but cannot play the bassoon. All of that being said, I make my best music when I can focus in on one instrument and really play it. The OP XY might work for me, but I just bought the Move, and the DN-2. Both of which scratch a different itch, but in many ways serve the same interest. And my beloved SP 404 mk2 (or should I say both of them - I'm an SP bigamist). For the OP XY I may want to go there, but then again, I can wait for the market to stabilize. few people realize that Teenage Engineering, as a small manufacturer from Sweden, has high prices for very high quality components from the manufacturers themselves, which are still increasing. In addition, there is the tax system in Sweden which simply robs them.
@LiamKillen27 күн бұрын
I'm also aware that each piece is custom made which also really increases the price. That being said same goes for OP-1 F which is pretty much the exact same design - but less expensive. It's still overpriced IMO

I think it's pretty obvious that you can buy a gang load of synths that can do way more than an OP-XY for the same amount or less. But none of that fits in your bag or large trench coat pocket like the OP series. Price is the price. Take it or leave it. In the case of the OP series, you can easily take it with you. I get that it's expensive AF. But I also think it's pretty sad people project and target their frustrations at those who have the means to buy it - with full intention of making music with it, not just to flex that they own it. This is what I think really makes it hard for me to get on board with a lot of the hate videos that dismiss anyone who buys the more expensive OP products as "hipsters" or people with more money than brains. Just focus on why you hate the product and don't project it as personal attacks.
@LiamKillenАй бұрын
Yeah I get your point here for sure. If it’s fun and you can afford it- why not buy it? 🤷♂️ It looks like I’ll have access to borrow one pretty soon lol - can’t wait to try it out

If I were just starting out, instead of being retired, - and had £1899, I'd sooner buy, MPCLive2 = £850 MiniFreak = £450 Mackie CR-1402vlz4 = £400 dbx 166A = £100 secondhand - (just to get some of that tightness, knock and thwack, via that familiar dbx action) - I have many dbx units from 118 units to 160A units, and still the 166A is a personal favourite, - especially regarding drums. The trick to using the cheaper dbx units, is to follow them with a much smoother VCA compressor like an old Drawmer DL241/251 - leaving around £100 for some cables, etc

New Mac Book Air M3, $1499. Ableton Live 12 suite, $749. Still $51 bucks cheaper than this. I actually love the TE design philosophy and the hand drawn design work they start out with. I wish they would make an ipad app for this...

@ u should test one, a lot of Pro Techno / House performers which u aim prefer BB instead of all other groove boxes, to me BB is the only modern Groovebox that i finish tracks so i sold all the rest. I like this TE how it looks e features compered to OP1 (which sounds awful and sterile) but for no reason in the world it justifies that amount of money no metter how much money i have it is SILLY to gift them to TE. A BlackBox + Akai S900 + Boomstar for the price of this TE and you have more Portability and especially Character in creating unique sounds.

@@LiamKillen Let me try and be more helpful/constructive: if you don't feel like you're the target market, then please just say so and why. That's what you're trying to say by saying "it's just marketing" but without the why. You even hint at the "why" when you snark about making music on a plane. To that point, I've never gotten the impression that you make music on your commute or on vacation or after work on the couch. Maybe (just maybe) a lot of your views are that kind of person and they'd appreciate that honesty.

Instead of buying their TX-6 ultra mini micro mixer you could purchase 1010music’s Bluebox, Blackbox and a nice small Audio Interface. The best value from TE is their PO series. Even with their shortcomings they are a complete bang for your buck. I am actually pulling for Behringer to bootleg their stuff.

Funny story, I am a day one purchaser of the op-xy (coming in on monday). I have had and used the op-1 for about 3 years and this has been my entry into a lot of small synthy stuff. I designed cases for the korg nts series and the pocket operators. The pocket operators made me fall in love with a sequencer workflow. Last week i decided to add both a digitone 2 and a digitakt 2 to my shopping basket to see how it felt and that day the XY came out. I 100% agree with the video and all the comments, probably the Takt combo is a more potent combination of devices, but having used a lot of teenage engineering stuff live, it feels this device is perfectly catered to me. I now plan on selling my original op-1 as I feel, hopefully with the effects on the XY being competent and functional, the sequencer based workflow of the XY, I can start letting go of gear that has now become redundant. I plan on using the multi-use port primarily as an secondary our so i can use external effects per track and plan on using the NTS-3 koass pad as a multi-effect for this purpose. This would mean a full live-setup that can fit in my slingbag, which is something I really really like as a one-bag travel/frequent flyer kind of person. Absolutely no hate for anyone that would prefer to spend their money elsewhere however❤
