The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a 1,000 mm metre gauge railway in Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908. The railway is operated by the Southern Railway and is the only rack railway in India. The railway relies on its fleet of steam locomotives.

I did this train ride in Feb 2003 as the first thing as part of my 45 days journey. It was not this crowded. No online booking in those days. I just walked in and bought the ticket. I am not surprised that it takes lot of planning these days to ride this train since there are lot of Vloggers travelling these days. LOL

In 1969 I saw my mother for the last time in this train. As said earlier my birth place is coonoor Nilgiris. Now I am in Maharashtra working for Railways cruising in various trains. But Nilgiri train is unique.

Hi Ajay: Excellent video of the toy train from Mettuppalayam to Ooty. We took a similar train (rack & pinion system) in Switzerland when we went from Wengen to Jungfraujoch (over 11,300 feet elevation) by train in 2012.

I have travelled from Coimbatore to Ooty by bus. It was a long time ago. Was supposed to visit in April 2020, unfortunately couldn't make it due to Covid 19 ( Non issue of Indian visa), God willing hope to visit in the near future. I love the place.

Nice video. Did a completely unplanned and unreserved journey in this train between Coonoor and Mettupalayam in Mar 2021. Ended up travelling in First Class with a Second Class Ticket 😂. The views were out of the world. But ended up sweating a lot as we reached Mettupalayam due to the engine's heat.

Hi, try Vizag to Araku vistadome train. I went there twice in Childhood and college days. At that time there was no vistadome train. Then itself it was superb. Now it should be really wonderful. It goes through so many tunnels with beautiful views similar to this one but a different experience.

Dear Ajay I had travelled in toy train several times to & fro Mettupalayam to Ooty 4 years ago. Really It's a pleasant journey for nature lovers. Only Disappointed that Toy Train fare hike from Rs.30/- to Rs.295/- for II class and Rs.195/- to Rs.565/- for I class Reservation. No unreserved coaches.Great Demand after COVID-19.

I had, travelled by this train by paying just Rs13. During 70s it used to almost vacant and the railways was planning to close it. The first class, gives a 360 ° view A, notable feature is there are 4 guards and control brakes of each coach. When the driver gives whistle all of them has to show green flag and the train will move up only if all thr guards show the flags
