Great video, I’ve been trying not to buy an OP-1 for over a year but there’s nothing else I could take on a walk with me in the woods with such richness. I’m def a love player rather than a sequencer. You’re reminding me why I want one 😂 thanks

Nice overview. Also really excellent presentation and style. Having owned both I can tell it is comprehensive. Goes to show the density of the OP-1. As I write this, the comment section has not yet completely deteriorated into the usual … „but it costs money!“. My hot take on those: I know perfectly well what I can buy for 2k. Yet there is a bunch of people who feel the need to explain it over and over again. That is not at all about teenage engineering, the OP-1, or people who like or use their stuff. Frankly, I don‘t know what that is about. But it is tiresome. Anyway - thanks for sharing an excellent video.

Not sure if this is a super unpopular opinion, but I actually prefer the lack of numerical information on most of the original OP-1's synth engines. It forces you to use your ears, and to be honest, I have no idea what the numbers mean anyway
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
Great comment. I think there's two schools of thought, those that want to play the instrument just like a piano and not worry about the inner workings. And the other approach is the synth programmer, who wants to engineer the device into producing specific sounds. The OP1 seems more about the feel and playing the device than the later.
@dangermouse8466
@dangermouse8466 Жыл бұрын
@@OllieLoops HI! That's a beautiful looking synthesiser. Are you planning on having the ability to lay down more tracks? Also, being a pianist, would it be possible to have full size keys and also the number of keys being greater than what you have there because I find it annoying to have to switch octaves. Thanks.

If it had the ability to save multiple songs and an "undo" button that let's you recover if you made a careless mistake it would be a perfect machine.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops Жыл бұрын
Undo would make this a perfect machine!
@darwiniandude
@darwiniandude Жыл бұрын
While I get people asking for undo, rember you can lift and then drop back a tape section before you record. Lift and drop is like being in Word on the computer and doing Edit|Cut (Control/Command X) and Edit|Paste (Control/Command V) then you make all your changes - as a copy is left on the clipboard still if you don't like it, select the text and do Edit|Paste (Control/Command V) again to get your original back. It basically is an undo buffer. In OP-1 terms, Lift the tape, Drop back to the same place, then record your overdub. If the timing of your playing is wrong, go back to the start and press Drop again. You then have the original recording back in place without your overdub. OP-1 Field has unlimited length Lift and Drop now I believe, and remember Shift+Lift or Shift+Drop does all four tracks at once, on both models. Sure it requires pre-emptively Lift and Drop before a recording to give yourself that backup undo buffer, but this is a work around we used to use in 1990 with the original Photoshop. It had undo, but only one single layer of Undo, and sometimes it didn't work. Cut/Copy to clipboard gave an extra level on Undo in that way.
@allegro_manontroppo
@allegro_manontroppo Жыл бұрын
@@darwiniandude ok, but it's unnecessarily complicated, while composing it's easy to forget or make a mistake by randomly pressing a key, a dedicated "undo" would be enough to solve the problem.

Les Paul did NOT INVENT the solid-body electric guitar (ref. e.g. Rickenbacker "Pan", btw, he didn't design the Les Paul guitar, either). Still, he was one of the most important visionaries of modern pop & recording alright - I'm excited to see which TE-inventions will have become industry-standard in a few decades...
