Opel Big Button M- The Best Phone For Vision Impaired?

Whilst definitely not the latest mobile phone on the market, the Opel Big Button M might be the best in its class for its target audience- those who are visually impaired and having trouble with modern touchscreen phones.
Yes, it does lack almost all the bells and whistles of any smartphone, this phone has something that the others lack- physical buttons to easily make phone calls.
If you are somebody who is in the market for a big button phone, this may just be the one you need to check out.

I used to have a flip phone. They were great and the battery lasted forever. I just can’t handle the texting with these phones. The new flip phones also look great

We bought the same phone but when my husband rings me her can’t hear even with the phone up near he’s ear the sound is low even though he pressed the he volume up

This has been very helpful as I am hoping to get one for my mum who is visually and hearing impaired. She loves the big buttons she has on her phone now but it is 3G, so searching for one that is easy to use and similar to her old phone. One question, did you happen to check out the camera? I know it is not a very good camera, but my mum would love to be able to receive photos, even if they are small x x Thanks for the review!

Thank you for your support. Look, if you view the phone as what it is and who it’s designed for, it’s ok. It isn’t an iPhone, that’s for sure. It’s not that intuitive but if she’s used to using the old Nokia phones then it will be quite familiar. The camera is crap as to be expected but for snap shots it’s ok. I think it really depends on how much sight your mum has. My Dad has almost zero vision and it’s not that easy for him to use, but still much easier than a phone with a touchscreen

Derek is right; it has a terrible camera compared to smartphones. Your Mum can still receive photos however, as the Opel phone supports MMS text messages; meaning that someone can send a text message with an attached photo. The Opel phone would receive the text & photo and you can then save the photo to the Gallery.

It was really hit and miss really. I don't have the phone now- my Dad has it, but my biggest worry was the fact that he can't see, and wouldn't be able to unlock the screen with multiple button presses. From memory there is something in the menu setting that allows you to do that, but when I tested it, it didn't always work. My Dad actually had a day where he pressed the wrong button, and disabled his phone until somebody with vision was able to help him undo what he did. I'm sorry I'm not of much help, but this is not the perfect phone, but at least it doesn't have a touch screen that gets pressed all of the time. Best wishes.

*_How to disable the Lock Screen..._* - Go to the Menu - Go to Settings - OK - Scroll down to Security - OK - Scroll down to Lock Screen (Press OK to toggle on/off) - If you also want to turn off the annoying Auto-Lock, you can select the 'Auto keypad lock'; then choose 'Off'.

@@steveh7216 I found this to be a bit hit & miss when I tested it before giving to my Dad. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. Not so good for a person who is visually impaired

My Dad has the phone now so I can’t. But let me just say from my experience with it that it’s not intuitive like an iPhone. It’s clunky like the old Nokias. The menus involve multiple clicks using the four directional button. Think a cordless phone that you use at home rather than a smartphone

@@rubix6095 definitely. My Dad who is pretty much completely blind, manages to use it. He had trouble one time when he didn’t realise he turned it off, but somebody was able to help him out. It’s much better than touchscreens for him because he would always press the wrong thing

The manual does not explain everything, and is in fact confusing.

The phone is in fact not simple to use and is confusing. People who want to buy phones like this should be able to get a product which is simple. Many folks don't want to spend hours trying to figure out how things work. They just want things that work simply, straight out of the box without tinkering. Surely somebody could come up with a better user-friendly experience than this, but I think there is not a huge market and hence nobody wants to put in the effort.
