Yasuke came over to Japan around 1580 as a slave to Jesuit missionaries who worked as both missionaries and chroniclers of the ongoing civil war. Oda Nobunaga took an interest in him on account of his size, strength and "ink-black" skin, and made him a retainer. 15 months later, Nobunaga died when Akechi Mitsuhide betrayed him, and history has it that Mitsuhide spared Yasuke on account of being "an animal who knows nothing". What happened to Yasuke after this is vague, but it is suggested that he might have returned to his old Jesuit acquaintances. Generally, Africans in Japan would've been pretty much non-existent outside of performing slave labor for merchants and monks, and any person who knew about the existence of people with dark skin would've likely had their opinions and knowledge of them influenced by the views of the slave owners. It is written that so many people wanted to see this black man that fighting broke out in the capital and several people were killed or injured. It is also written that Yasuke understood very little, if any Japanese, but he could perform tricks, which entertained Nobunaga. Much of the intricacies of Yasuke's relationship with the Japanese is lost to time, but it's likely that Yasuke was little more than a glorified circus curiosity, in the same vein that people of color were put on exhibitions in Europe. He didn't speak much, if any Japanese, and the amount of training he could've gotten as a samurai is extremely limited considering he was only employed for 15 months before his new lord died. He's popular in pop culture, but I don't think he's nearly as empowering of a character as people want him to be.

@SleepyFen
@SleepyFen 4 ай бұрын
@@samwallaceart288 basically people like to imagine a black samurai, but it's all fiction. I don't have an issue with featuring Yasuke in a game, but assassin's creed at least used to pride itself on somewhat authentic portrayals of historical settings, using fictional protagonists to explore and interact with historical figures to make the plot of the secret war somewhat grounded in reality. But so far it doesn't look like they're not even trying to make an effort to portray Yasuke faithfully. If they don't like the fact that Yasuke was likely just a curiosity to be shown off by the nobility of Japan at the time, then they shouldn't have used him. He was most likely about as far from a color swapped version of the "white savior" cliché as you can possibly get.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the Twilight Zone airplane episode is loosely based on a short story by Roald Dahl called "The Gremlins," about an RAF pilot who has his plane chewed up by gremlins. Disney bought the rights to it in the 1940s, but the feature never made it past preproduction stage.

They remade the Shatner Twilight Zone Episode in the Twilight Zone Movie and the part was played by John Lithgow. Later, Shatner played The Big Giant Head on the Third Rock from the Sun. He came to visit but landed in the wrong state and had to take a plane the rest of the way. When he got there they asked him how was the trip and he said, "It was horrifying. I saw a man out on the wing," to which Jon Lithgow replied, "The same thing happened to me!"

I agree with MauLer and Drinker that modern day movies are shattering the mystique that made characters so fascinating. Look at those Clint Eastwood westerns, where his past was almost always mysterious and unexplained. Do you care what made him "The Good" in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"? Do you care what made the other two main characters what they were? The movie drops some hints here and there, but hints is all they are. Only Tuco's character is explained in more detail and in my opinion that didn't make much of a difference to his character. Good storytelling can make you ignore those things and in my opinion it's only the greedy attempt to squeeze more money out of a successful movie to "gifts" us sequels and prequels that reveal more of the character(s).

For me, what makes a character fascinating is a sense of agency, well defined and consistent character traits and motivations that drive the plot, put them at odds with an antagonist, and generate interesting conflict. Alot of classic hero's journies can feature blank slates who are constantly dragged through the adventure with little input. Conversely, a character like Tony Soprano is almost predictable because we know him so well. Yet this is the most interesting type of character to see tested by intense conflict because they are often forced to struggle against themselves.

That superchat about Texan/Floridian Hollywood comment doesn't take into account how much my beloved homestate and slightly less beloved neighbor have been overrun by people fleeing California and then trying to "fix" the state they moved to because they miss California. Like, we Texans have a joke about Central Texas/Austin area being Southern South California. A Texas Hollywood would be born in Austin (because it thinks it's the music and entertainment capitol of the world; spoilers, no), and it would be exactly the same but on a smaller budget and with less recognizable actors.

Japanese wanting to see themselves represented in a game that emulates feudal japan... is racist. Ok then. Yasuke IS an historical figure (and shirley deserves a movie Last samurai style), however if you're making a game in Japan, you try to make characters based on notorious figures of japanese history, and Yasuke was not a prominent samurai.

Kirk from the start of Star Trek to The Undiscovered Country gets massive character development too. Sisko gets the most directly in his own series though. Picard gets some after his Assimilation, and later in the movies/season 3 of Picard. Janeway stays a tyrant the whole time. Archer remains Duchess until season 4. So it's a tie between Sisko and Kirk, and Sisko actually looks up to James T. Kirk...

Meet Joe Black, which someone in chat mentioned, stars Anthony Hopkins, who I love to see in anything, and it's not a bad movie, but to be honest it's so slowly paced he's most of what keeps it afloat. Brad Pitt helps, as a quirky fish out of water Grim Reaper, but there's not enough of that. It's worth seeing, but I'd argue it's something you're going to want to pause frequently to take a break. The writing and characters seem fine, and it's interesting, but it could have been tightened or trimmed a bit, especially considering the run time.

Given current events, I'd like to see a one off low budget Iron Man movie similar to 2022 'The Batman' concept (better executed). Have Terrance E. Howard play Tony Stark. He appears to be uniquely qualified to understand Mr. Stark's character. Choose the best available actors for Pepper Pots and Col Rhodes, pay no regard to the actor's race. Most of the production as long been done for Iron Man, so they can do a good version at a lower budget.

There is no precedent for kissing for them. Putting their heads together felt more natural for me, even as i watching it. I still appreciate his perspective, though.

007 has the unfair advantage of having the main theme and a different intro for every movie. Star Wars has Duel of Heroes, Duel of Fates, Main Theme, Love Theme, Across the Stars, Imperial March, and some other i am sure i am forgeting. Indiana Jones only have its main theme. Lord of the Rings is mostly bangers. Gondor Theme, Rohan Theme, The Shire one, Isengard Theme, the Charge Theme, the Arwen one, the Nazguls one, the Ring one, etc. Just tons of them, all of them with lots of personality. Star Trek have its intro, perhaps maybe a couple more that are very characteristics.
