Open BMW trunk / boot without / dead battery

How to open BMW E90 trunk/ boot due to battery dead or disconnected.
Pardon me but the piece that needed to be broken to make a hole was rather carbon fiber and not foam.

There should be a positive terminal in the hood that you can attach a jump box to and activate the trunk release. Information courtesy of USA BMW dealership. 👍

This can happen even with no battery issues like when the trunk lock mechanism is faulty or for some reason the car registers the trunk as open even though it's closed(Coding can solve this). FYI there is no manual unlock with the key from outside on the E90 LCI in South Africa

I have tried numerous times using a battery and jump-started via positive terminal under the hood to no avail- I too removed the battery to get a new one and tried but got no power at all -- not a trace of current- this was the only option for me. Does anybody know why no current can be delivered enough to pop the trunk?

Look in the cubby hole. There is a boot lock switch on the right. It's pretty small. That might do it . I eventually found it after pulling my hair out and having multiple specialists including a BMW dealership look at it. BMW wanted to charge me R1400 just to diagnose it.

So many ridiculous comments here. It's very simple.... You CAN NOT OPEN THE TRUNK WITHOUT POWER... Unless you cut a hole... Period. There's no "Key hole' ,,, jumping it will NOT work if the battery is not connected. We dont have the European "Ski hole"... I came to this conclusion, but decided to check the internet to see if anyone else did it first. I really appreciate this video. Apparently, I'm not the only one dealing with this. I've read 100 comments from people saying "Just use the key" or "Just Jump it" as if people didn't try that already -_- The hole is the Only way. This video makes me feel better about cutting a hole in my Bimmer. You sir, are a pioneer. Thanks.

Haha - I like your sassy comment lol! For the record though, I have a buddy that has a 323i that has a key hole slotted near the number plate. Guess some do come with this oh so special option. But for the rest of us...

@@Speeedeee true,,, but nobody comes to the internet before looking at their car. So the people saying "Just jump it" or "Just use the key" are basically being jerks on purpose. You clearly mention and wrote down "Disconnected battery" and people still say Jump it. I'm just stressed from having to deal with this awful BMW engineering in the first place, then I come here and see the comment section is full of Captain Obvious quotes :( Anyways,,, thanks again for having the only actual solution to this problem. Theres 10 other videos of people saying "Use the Key / Jump it" as if We are all dumb and didn't think of those things already.

You simply need to connect your car to another car battery with jumping cables. Once you do that you open the trunk. This solution on this video is just desperate.

That works if you have a dead battery or if you have only removed the battery and not the distributor box that BMW installed on top of the battery - and which some people remove for easier access.

That recommendation to attach a jump to the positive terminal and negative terminal in the bonnet did not work (as suggested by so many below) probably because I removed the battery. The car remained totally dead despite jumping as suggested below. Broomstick blessings

Did you try using jumper cables from the bonnet to power the system. I'm trying to resolve the same problem on a 1 series cabriolet and it's so far been impossible to get into the boot.

Well the reason I was unable to do the same is because the Battery was already disconnected. Had it been connected, the jumpers could have worked, but in my case there was nothing the jumpers could give power to.

I managed to resolve the issue by insulating the wire doing to the release mechanism and supplying it with 12v. It was a grey wire with a thin green stripe. I accessed it from a panel below the glove compartment. Did you try the jumper lead method. It seems to work on an e90 even with the battery disconnected.

Why not just put a jump pack or leads from another car to the terminals under the bonnet then press the release button?

Speeedeee001, thank you very much. I was about to remove the back seat again this being my second time getting locked out of my trunk with a dead battery. I decided to look on youtube and I think your suggestion was the best option. I have since fed a string through the hole to the pull handle located in the trunk with a pull handle on the other end located within the car through my new hole.

I recently saw a Video that shows there is a tab in the glove box , with trunk symbol to lock or unlock trunk the trunk. I moved the tab to unlock, then used my Key part of the keyfob to unlock the trunk. I had no power to the car, my negative terminal was disconnected.

I crushed the vent elbow during install. I unplug the cables, closes the trunk and went to store. Then I realize there is no way to open the trunk. There is no keyhole, jump start through hood didnt do anything. Your video was the only way. THANKS !!!!. Although now there is a dollar coin size inside my truck. I guess no more trunk bodies for me.

I have a BMW E90 320 and took the battery out to replace. Closed the boot not knowing of the issues about to arise. When I returned I realized the issue. Called AA R800 later they couldn’t fix it. They suggested a lock Smith. Hours later my dad sent me your video and 10 minutes later problem solved. THANK YOU for sharing this solution. It saved my day!!!

On a BMW F30 series, lift the hood using manual level located in front footwell. Connect a jump start kit or cable from another battery/car. Positive to Positive terminal under red plastic, negative to metal pin sticking out behind headlight. The car should then have sufficient power to open the trunk using the remote key or push lever.

That would work - if the battery is still connected to the terminals. If the battery was disconnected, you would have a problem.

Negative terminal was disconnected because I removed the alternator. What happens Is the car is getting its juice directly for the Jumper.

You can open the hood from the front by removing the front grill and after u open the hood you can jump the system by another car and open your car

All you have to do is connect your battery to the under hood lump start locations using a set of jumper cables. Then just open the trunk and install the battery.

I just wanted to help others out that have the same problem. If you can get into the car meaning the car is unlocked then just remove the rear seats it's pretty easy and takes about 5 minutes. Google rear seat removal. You'll need a t45 socket

Don't cut the hole as suggested!!! I had taken my battery out to replace it and went to the auto store so I closed the trunk on my 09 328i. All you have to do is remove the key from the key fob and look up to the right of the trunk handle. There's a key lock, turn it all the way to the left and trunk will open.

Newer BMWs don't have key locks on the trunks. You can only open the trunk by activating the electric relay or pull the child safety unlock (luckily this is mechanical, doesn't need battery power).

There is no key lock, if you listened to him in the beginning there is perhaps a difference in the Eu models vs the rest of the world, seeing that its a RHS drive and not EU i assume its a place like South Africa
