Thanks for the great video. On November 2, 2017, at the age of 80, I was assaulted in my own driveway by two young men in broad daylight. They found out very quickly that they had bitten off more than they could chew. There's nothing more dangerous than a pist off old man with a gun. From that day forward however, I seldom carried concealed. The gun on my side for all to see is like a sign on my fence that says, “Beware of this old Dog, he bites”. People look at me a little weird, but they leave me alone. Recently, a high-ranking officer from the local Police Department, registered his disapproval of my open carry policy and claimed a bad person would see me as an opportunity for a free gun. I will not be drawn into that argument, Officer. I don't care about your opinion. The only question the police should ask is, is it legal? In Rhode Island open carry is legal with the proper permit but, in all my years I have never met another person exercising that right. About the statement that I could be viewed as an opportunity for a free gun, such a decision could be hazardous for one's health. I can assure you it would not end well. There is no database available with statistics of things that never happened. The deterrent theory cannot be proved or disproved. - I open carry. “A Free people claim their rights, as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate.” - Thomas Jefferson

I wish I could like this video twice. I open-carry a sidearm when hunting or camping, and in the areas where I do that few would bat an eye if I wandered into a gas station wearing a pistol, but I don't. For a thousand reasons, which you pretty much covered. And yeah, Roy, if I see someone open-carrying in an inappropriate venue I watch them carefully.

When Texas went open carry, I had a custom holster, belt, and mag carrier made to celebrate the event just because I could. I thought I would celebrate the occasion. I thought "What the hell, I'll give it a try." I open carried in Afghanistan but that was a very different circumstance. But the law in Texas is written so that businesses can choose if, and how you may carry in their establishment. So the day the law went into effect, I strapped on my new custom rig and went about my business. I went to the grocery store where I knew concealed carry was OK, but being a law abiding citizen I checked the signage at the door. No open carry. I went back to my car and put my gun in the car. After leaving the grocery I put my gun back on and went to the bank where concealed carry was legal at the time. I checked the signage on the door and no open carry. I went to my car and put the gun in the car. Walmart, the same situation. So my celebration of the event was short lived. I decided that legal or not, smart or stupid, this whole open carry thing just wasn't working for me. I do like the fact that theoretically, I have the option, and if I'm concealed and happen to be spotted or for some reason my gun shows, I won't go to jail for it. Generally speaking I think you guys are correct and from a practical standpoint in Texas, you really can't open carry and go freely about your business anyway. Just like when Texas went Constitutional Carry, you can't legally carry what you want, how you want, wherever you want. Businesses can choose to allow open or concealed, licensed or constitutional carry. So practically in Texas, if you really want to exercise your right to carry as much as possible, you need to carry concealed and have a license to carry.

I started out being a supporter of Open Carry but after seeing a few examples as you mentioned, I completely agree. The few times I've seen it now, it's as you say. I see someone looking to draw attention to themselves and acting in a manner that they're trying to prove a point. One in particular, it made me laugh, guy got off a chopper with a beat up old 1911 in a huge old green canvas holster that looked like it was going to fall off his belt, it was so ratty. I feel the same about folks that put gun manufacturer stickers on their vehicle... why not just put a sticker on the car that says "I own at least one gun, why not take a chance and break in and see if I happened to leave it in there tonight?" Great video!

I have to agree and disagree. The only reason I would say yes to open carry is to avoid unintentionally showing my weapon. For example, I find inside the waistband very uncomfortable, and I would rather have my weapon then leave it home, and I also ride a motorcycle. Normally my attire covers my weapon fine, but sometimes my shirt may flap up or my jacket might rise up briefly exposing my weapon momentary. In many states, including my own, I can be arrested for that. I look at it as a way to keep me legal to carry my otherwise legal weapon. It would also avoid me from being arrested if someone complained they think I am carrying (printing) either pocket or waistband.

Generally, most people just ignore open carry here, but the other xx% get distressed. This can result in calls to police, or angry folks doing dumb stuff. I maintain a large property so I have lots of tools (machetes, axes, pruning saws, etc. on my belt as needed)…..But even a small belt knife gets folks in stores distressed. Not sure that a ‘cheap’ gun is relevant, but I’d agree a good retention holster is very desirable. Cheers.

I was always taught "ACTION is always faster than RE-ACTION". For that reason alone concealed carry is always the best way to carry. Even if you carry concealed you are still at a disadvantage because you are having to respond to a threat that is or has already taken place.

I feel that all concealed carry should be a federal crime with a minimum 10 years. This way I can make the determination of who is armed and do I trust them with a gun. I know quite a few people with concealed carry permits that I wouldn't trust with a sharpened stick. If I know who has a gun and I have any doubts I can choose to leave the area. When everyone can conceal now every drunk, fool, idiot or incompetent can be armed.

Eighteen minutes in, Brent said the magic word: norm(s). Societal norms of the place and time determine whether or not open carry is smart. If, after the wars, we live in a world similar to the American frontier; men will be considered sneaky and ill-intentioned if they appear in public without a visible weapon. Study Center guys who maintain the necessary ratings are always visibly armed in and about Center properties--it's required. And, too, it's about how many men in a public place are openly armed. If a majority are openly carrying, the sight of a holstered gun is no longer out of the norm or alarming. Ever been in a busy police station? Which leads to this observation: uniformed police always appear in public openly armed; the little animal looking for an easy mark to mug always carries concealed.

The fact it makes you a target for people who want a gun but can't get one legally is the biggest knock against it. If police with the level 3 retention holsters can get their piece stolen, I'm willing to bet it could happen to almost anyone, and it's a *completely unnecessary risk*.

Gawd, how I enjoy Guncranks! You guys are a riot - and bring up a lot of salient points as well. Saw an open carrier in the supermarket a couple weeks back - nice 1911 in (what looked to be) a decent holster. I also noted he was left-handed; nice to know as well. We had a pleasant chat. But he had no idea I was carrying, nor did anyone else. This wasn't a high-crime area, but I left the deli, and came back a bit later after the 'potential target' had moved on. And this is AZ, where the freeway rest stop has a sign saying "Welcome to Arizona - Now Learn to Shoot!"

Let’s all support gun control then. FL can’t get OC restored and MD and CT are about to lose the ability and people that hate open carry can’t care less. I don’t want to open carry myself. The only reason I’d ever open carry is because open carry is more comfortable than concealed carry. But I want open carry to be legal so that if my shirt rides up and someone can see my gun for a half a minute until I pull my shirt back down I’m not breaking the law. I do have a CWP even though I don’t need one since I live in Florida.

In many old west towns open carry was prohibited. And there have been various sorts of laws covering pretty much all facets of carry. For me, it just makes sense to keep every option available for self-defense and one of those is not allowing a suspect/threat to know my capabilities to fight back. Until they hear the really loud noise … Roy

I live in a small town and I see this in Walmart. As they say in the video my first thought is if I was going to rob this place they would be first.. open carry is "look at me, I'm a special boy, I'm a badass" what makes it even more ridiculous is there has been at least one occasion of an active shooter a person was caught fleeing the scene who was carrying a gun and it wasn't the shooter 😅 a lot of those open carry guys think that their Wyatt Earp, but in reality I'd say 90% of them are Johnny Tyler.

I agree completely here. # 1 rule: Do Not Advertise!! As for open carry being a deterrent,I've read several stories about the famous old west bank robbers shooting the obvious threat first. And the gangsters of the roaring 20's did exactly the same thing. I ran across one open carry person that was carrying a well know striker fired 9mm and he stated that he would be my protector if something happened. He had no clue whatsoever that I was carrying concealed at the time and could probably have gotten the drop on him.

Im so srr, there is just somthing thats counter intuitiv about this video and its advice. Please correct me if im wrong. But saying that you shouldnt open carry for the main reason of making yourself a target seems like a "grey" area. Hear me out. The rules around open carry laws is to say that it is legal to do so as long as the wep is seen from 3/4 sides of your person. This would imply that to some degree, even criminals are aforded (by law) some measure of warning before commiting sed crime, Via the aformentioned visible indicator, hence the requiered visibility of sed wep. So this would lead one to believ that it would almost be incriminating for the average person who carries a gun CC to pull a gun at all on a unsuspecting robbing unless the situation was very specific and indeed the robber or crook or criminal presented an clear and visible threat to you or somone else, OR if they have a CCW card or the state does not require one. I mean look at what kyle ritten house went through and that was open carry, a clear threat to his life and on camera and the dude still almost went to prison. So what would happen to someone else if they decide to plink the thug holding up waffle house in the back of the dome when he looks away. But see, theft does not fall into this catagory of (clear threat), nor does simply brandishing a wep. So wouldnt you be opening yourself up to a possible lawsuit if you did happen to get the drop on a bag guy and put one in the back of his head when he turned away to empty the register, not knowing that you had a gun? Or would you have to legally say somthing like, "hey, bad guy! drop it!" Cuz if thats the case i feel like it kinda defeats the point of the bad guy "not knowing" in the first place. Does that make sense?

I carry all the time even at home, but I keep my gun covered even at home. However, that said, when I cross the state line just south of my hometown, I can't get a permit. It's a shall issue state - if you are a resident - but so far, they aren't issuing permits to out-of-staters, but we can carry openly. Come to Connecticut and see why OpenCarry is important. The legislators in this state is trying to make open carry illegal. In their bills HB6667 & HB6816, they are trying to remove the open-carry and if you are printing at all or even showing partly, they are going to make it a felony. Those who do open carry here are also using high-retention holsters. Not every state is the same.

it isnt stupid to open carry, as army veteran i dont think calling us stupid is warranted any more then calling a concealed carrier stupid as well because you do have those also, with open or concealed carry both have pros and cons, concealed carry only people often use whats called "straw dummy" arguments, this is where you pick out only worst examples of a opposing side but offer no real world evidence to support the claims, often those who say open carry is stupid are going off feelings mostly and no facts to support the claims like a sample of 50,000 open carriers vs 50,000 concealed carriers and the defense incident results. first lets start with the pure facts for both 1.) situational awareness, open carry does require more but that doesnt mean its unachievable, as a consealed carry person you could be not paying attention also, i see concealed carriers who are on cell phones and not paying attention taking for granted that just because gun is hidden somehow it means they wont be a target. ok lets talk about target selection, 2.) target selection, you can be targeted just as much as a concealed carrier as a open carrier, now its good you have a gun but a crimminal may think your unarmed and attack you despite being a concealed carrier, open carry is usually a deturant, criminals usually wait till you leave the area because its easier to rob a place with no resistance from a open carrier, ist based on the "risk vs reward" even criminals are smart and take the path of less risk to get what they want, for example if i got only 5 bucks on me and shopping at a dollar store, for a criminal to target me and shoot me for 5 bucks or rob the place the reward isnt that great for the risk taken so they simply wait untill you leave, now if say i was a cash machine guy whoes job it was to clear cash machies then the risk to a criminal may be more being he gets something out of it, but even then those guys are open carry so they can draw and shoot quicker. 3.) draw speed, given a open carrier or concealed carrier are equally situationally aware at the same level the open carry method you can draw and shoot much faster were getting to holster concealed carry your beind the curve and criminals are not all dumb, they are fully aware that every place they go someones packing. 4.) element of suprise, its true that conceal carriers have had the element of suprise on thier side but as we see now millions of new carriers who conceal carry the criminals know meaning the element of suprise is not what it was decades ago and you as a citizen can be a element of suprise to the bad guy, you think the bad guy watches a good guy but a good guy has eyes and watches a bad guy just as much, if your not paying attention it will not be a advantage as a concealed carrier any more then open carrier. 5.) they will grab your gun, this is where conceal carry only people often use a straw dummy argument gving a example of a guy in the hood with sweat pants and gun hanging out back end of back pocket at a gas station store check out counter, well he is a idiot and doesnt represent the way we open carriers carry, first of all we avoid the hood and stay out of places we should be unless absolutely necessary, we have good belts and a good retension holster, a good retension holster a gun can not be pulled from side ways but straight up, we have situational awareness and bending over to pick something up we first look around us so that argument for a gun grab isnt relevant if a person is paying attention and keeps distance from people. 6.) the myth that open carriers are targeted more then concealed carriers, concealed carriers are targeted more because bad guys assume they dont have a gun, now its good that the concealed carrier has a gun but if concealed carriers were attacked less then open carriers you wouldnt have thousands of incidences where concealed carriers were attacked giving their defense stories on how they were attacked and sometimes couldnt get the gun out to respond quickly enough, there are thousands of open carriers who dont get attacked that carry open or some times open every day, to get the facts you would have to have research say gathering 50,000 open carriers and 50,000 concealed carriers and look at in a study who get attacked more, we would have to leave out of the study everything but the private citizen though, we would not include law enforcement, military, or gangs since we are focused only on the average private citizen and if you have 50,000 represented on each side, in doing that i think you would see open carry is not the doom we think or stupid. 7.) places we carry, conceal carry only people tend to think us open carriers carry open every where, we dont, places can be divided up into a few categories, you have rural areas "the woods" and urban areas "the hoods" and suburbs in the middle, a saying about carry partially applies to us open carriers goes something like this "open carry for the woods, concealed carry for the hoods" however many susburbs open carry if fine for most. its a vibe you get about an area and you carry according to that but once again avoiding areas you know are trouble, this includes concealed carry to, you avoid troubled areas unless you have a reason to be there because you not invisible or have all the advantages just because you conceal carry, gangs all conceal carry and those concealed carriers get killed more then private citizen open carriers, for whites we can get away with urban open carry since their are hardly if any white gangs, but for blacks the reason why a decent black private citizen person wont open carry is because they dont want to be perceived as a gang memeber, so in some ways blacks, latinos and people other then whites have rival gangs that are at each other and in urban areas they usually conceal carry. although we have some good police officers we still have a lot that see a black man open carrying as a gang member or a threat 8.) kens and karens, if you open carry its your right, be polite but you may get called on but that doesnt have to stop you from excercising your right to open carry if you are lawfully carrying doing no harm, it may be a inconvienience to you but its also educates people that dont want you to open carry, law enforcemnt may get calls but they have to deal with it, our rights to open carry are not tread over by someones feelings, a right is a right and no persons feelings is over your rights 9.) the misconception that open carriers only carry to show off, the cranks in this video seem to imply that in opening statements even making fun of us who do want to show people our constitutional right to be proud we have the right to open carry because of our veterans, freedom is not for free nor rights, the veterans died for that. 10.) the right to bear arms, the right to bear means have on you including out in the open, if you even look at the Richmond virginia meetup 60,000 or more people "open carried" should thay have hid those rifles and pistols and go concealed, no because we dont have to hide our arms on us , some states laws allow us and some dont but that why we vote in those who are for our constitutional rights, look at a battle field be it WW2 or any war, no once hardly conceald carry except special missions. 11.) open carry once in a while even if you dont because a "polite society is a armed society" if we never open carry then citizens will never know that we are decent people getting adjusted and used to a few open carriers, open carry citizens are respected more then the police and treat people better as well, shure you have a few good cops but a private citizen these days who carries has the respect they have earned, respect is earned and not given, a badge means nothing or years on duty if you dont earn respect as other citizens who carry have got, open carry citizens are by far the best at treating people decent because the gun is in plain sight, concealed carriers often are jerks because they know they can be because no gun is showing just like off duty cops gving people the midle finger in traffic that they wouldnt do had they had a gun on hip and gear so open carry makes you conscious of treating others nice even if you dont want to, the ken or karen call also could happen if you dont, open carry once again makes you fine tune your situational awareess because you have to, concealed carry you take for granted being more relaxed on that cell phone not paying attention, calling open carriers who know how to open carry stupid i dont think is right, being a vetran i am proud to have that right to open carry and i do use that right

Man. You really laid it out for them. Very well said. Larry, Moe, and Curly like to hack on people for exercising their constitutional rights instead of offering some potentially valid advice. I open carry (a real) Colt 1860 Army everywhere I go and it rides in a nice Triple K 310 holster high on my right side. I don't always want to carry openly but I never want to leave it behind so it goes. SC has not infringed on our freedoms as far as some other states so I wear it. I get lots of looks and many compliments because it's a bit unconventional to see someone armed with an antique but it's also almost a work of art, it's very pleasing to the eye as opposed to the ugly, mean-looking Glock which can serve only one purpose in most people's minds. My Colt gets looks, an auto gets scowls.

I totally agree, guys. As a matter of fact, in light of the potential Open Carry proposal here in Florida, I recently posed this same question to the S&W Forum and got hundreds of replies. Almost all were to the effect of: open carry will not result in "The Wild West" so don't worry; open carry is stupid even if it is legal; carry concealed to give yourself options; if you own or carry a firearm get some training; etc. Great podcast, I enjoyed it. Oh, and BTW...the calendar on Roy's wall (in the background) is dated "January 2020". Unless he really likes the photo, it might be time to get a new calendar! LOL! Keep up the good work.

No open carry proposal in Florida it is concealed carry without a license as long as you are legally able to own a gun. From what I understand the plus side is anybody that can legally own a gun can now carry without taking the class, as well as officers can stop and identify without cause if they just suspect you have a weapon on you. I personally have never had a problem identifying to an officer when I am carrying.

@@mattjohnson2072 You are correct, only the constitutional carry bill passed in Florida. But Gov. DeSantis and others have been pushing for Open Carry too, and I can see that happening sometime in the near future. Since this was an "Open Carry" podcast, I just wanted to point out that Florida is moving in that direction.

I also agree that open carry is a shoot me first reality. To me canceled carry is or should be more of a deterrent because the bad guy doesn't know who has a firearm and will be less likely to try something. That's why they pick shoft targets where they are pretty sure no one has a gun. Something else I'd like to hear your opinion on is a right to carry state. Here in Ohio the Governor recently signed a bill that allows anyone to carry ( that isn't a felon that is) without a canceled carry license. I personally completely disagree with this as now you have people with absolutely no training whatsoever running around with guns, this bothers me. I also wonder how many of these people will illegally cross into another state with their gun without thinking. There is no reciprocity without a CCW and untrained individuals may not even think about this. I would be interested in hearing your opinion on this subject.

Yep & I always call out the ones I see. (Not smart on my end but something I am passionate about) I just had one at the local grocery store and his response, I will put one in your head... That's the kind of people that open carry, no training no nothing. He was completely caught off guard and scared that someone would say something to him and confront him. He really thought he was creating a shield for himself by open carrying and everyone would stay away. He needed to know, it's the opposite effect. It's so stupid so stupid. If it were so effective everyone would do it, there is a reason why it will never evolve to that it's dumb. CCW is the only way unless your supposed to be open carrying.

Anyone who thinks that carrying ONLY one way or the other is wrong is an idiot. Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages. A smart gun owner knows the difference and chooses what he/she thinks is best at the time. Try concealed carry in PHX in the summertime. Quite frankly I heard a lot of f-ing idiocy here.

I have so many thoughts about all this. I personally never openly carry but some of the comments alarm me. Some of this almost reminds me of the closet Christian mentality. I usually carry concealed but im not alarmed, offended or ashamed or anything when I see someone OC. The courts ruled years ago that protecting the people was not the police's primary job -or something to that effect and Im fine with that. I'll protect me and mine. Anyway, just discovered this channel and love the discussions. Very good presentation. We The People....

1. I’m the biggest gun guy you will ever meet 2. NO ONE supports the 2nd Amendment more than I do 3. I’ve worked retail mgt for 45 years. See open carry everyday, and my radar screen starts to bleep off the wall. You are usually correct, high point in a cheap holster. Occasionally see nice dressed rancher with a Glock, etc in a good kydex holster Being in MT it doesn’t really set off a lot of stares, but you know there are those anti gunners who are pissed. Worse is the person on the fence about gun control that gets tipped to the anti side because of it. I carry owb but with a cover garment or I use a Fanny pack. Just can’t do inside the pants. Winter in a heavy coat. Problem is the gray matter isn’t there with the people who want to make that “rights” statement and try and see they are doing more harm than good. I really think they are just trying to make a statement for their inadequacies

While open carry may not be the smartest idea, it shouldn't be illegal. Mainly because of accidentally exposing your gun while you're conceal carrying. If that happens in an open carry state, cops have no legal authority to arrest you. If you accidentally expose even a tiny part of your gun here in Illinois, or Florida, or New York, your ass is going to prison and you're going there for a long time. So you have to make sure your shirt is an XXXXL where it's not gonna lift up.

Who cares if it’s a cheap holster and a budget gun? How many times was that brought up? I’m not in that position, but if someone doesn’t have the money to buy an expensive holster & handgun… at least they are carrying! I don’t think I would open carry unless I was in the woods, but I’m not about to be against someone else doing it if they want. Don’t say you are for gun rights, and then try and hinder others. It’s your opinion. Not everyone thinks like you. Do not say you are for the second amendment , and people’s rights…but then want to hinder other peoples rights because of your opinions. Let others open carry if it’s what they like. Quit dissing people who can afford expensive things. I’m glad they are supporting the second amendment the best they can.
