Awesome sound, and I knew it was birch, . . why? sounds like the old STELLAs, . . which we know Charly Patton used, and many other bluesmen. I am convinced Robert Johnson used a Stella Birch on many of his recordings based on the 'ear test' after accidentally acquiring one, (e.g., Rambling Man, Hellhounds,) and after owning or trying Nationals, vintage Gibsons, etc, . . because these STELLAS (like this Levin) hit bottom at 12, and bc RJ had to use a Cappo, and based on the flatter , duller sound, for example on songs like Crossroads, (open A,K2) I believe he used a 14 fret guitar like a Kalamazoo at times. Not sure about the other guitars, yet. Working on it.

PS-- WHY do people get so EXCITED about Martins?? some asking over 15K for "vintage Martins" vintage as in what? Who back then or back whenever made distinctive music with a "Martin"? Eric Clapton unplugged? Is that it? I would rather have this birch Levin any day... am I missing something, or is Martin just good at marketing??
@f2detaboada6 жыл бұрын
Martins only got famous when they created the fire myth of one of their guitar stockpiles, making them "rare guitars". Funny thing is that Gibson and Taylor also used the exact same story to cover up the fact that they were running out of rosewood.
@TOMPDUDE6 жыл бұрын
@@f2detaboada Please site your sources. Where did you get your information?
@strawsparky335 жыл бұрын
@@f2detaboada you haven't played a good Gibson, Martin, or Taylor yet. Not every guitar has it, but when its the right one they feel magical when you play them. Gibson, Taylor, and Martin are great guitar makers. they most definitely overprice their instruments. I have a JC-16GTE that was custom ordered with walnut sides and an ebony fret board and left at the shop it was ordered at. Every time i pick it up, its like playing it for the first time and falling in love with it all over again. Ive played plenty of terrible Gibson's (especially acoustic Gibson's, they do not hold up to standards very well unless you're paying above 1500 for one which is ridiculous). Taylor's are generally great sounding guitars, but if they don't have the "feel" that puts it on that magical level, they all sound the same. Martins are hit and miss i feel these days, their older guitars are definitely worth a good buck or two. And setup comes to mind too. Unless you learn how to properly set up a guitar on your own, and continue to practice the repair/maintenance that comes with owning a guitar, you wont ever really get close to that feeling. Guitar is an extension of you, so how can you expect that feeling from something you pick up out of a box that is set up exactly like the other thousands of guitars made just like it? Even all the luxury Gibson electric guitars leave the factory with the same strings and set up. its up to you to make it how you like
@mattwilliams31045 жыл бұрын
I personally have never been a huge fan of Martin guitars, but I believe it is all player preference. I've come to enjoy playing Taylor acoustics more than most brands, Breedloves are also up there. My favorite guitar to play is actually the Taylor GS Mini with Koa, I just wish they would make them 100% real wood, not just the tops.

Hi Andreas, great playing. I've just picked up one of these but its a bit of an anomaly. The label says model 55 but its a natural finish with a slotted headstock. According to the serial number it was made in 1965 - years after the model was discontinued ! i was wondering what action you set them up for to play slide. Mine has an action of around 4mm at the 12th. Not sure whether to have a neck reset to lower a couple of mm or leave it as it is. it is still playable at the lower frets for fretting
@AndreasBrink15 күн бұрын
Thanks! To quote on of the old Levin employees I interviewed for my documentary film, "anything can happen in a guitar factory". I've seen many Levin guitars that doesn't have the right specs, especially from the 1940s when many types of wood were hard to import to Sweden due to the war. I like the action to be a tad higher than for normal fretting, but not a whole lot. 4mm make slide comfortable but fretting difficult and intonation of fretted notes will not be great. Neck resets are expensive and if you don't do them yourself maybe it's better to just use the guitar as it is and play within it's limits.
@AndrewHossack197215 күн бұрын
@@AndreasBrink i didnt realise that was your documentary ! i'll watch it again ! i got the guitar really cheap - so the reset may be an option ! but fretted notes on frets 1 to 7 are pretty much ok - so i'm in 2 minds atm !thanks for your advice. I'd really like a sunburst model they look great ! Which is your favourite levin model for blues and slide ?
