The poor and marginalised were unable to enjoy music and dance as forms of entertainment because traditional dance forms were reserved for kings and their courts, later zamindars and their tawaifs. They had to create their own form, which was a replica of what the caste society in the countryside thought roughly resembled the form of their masters but was enhanced by their own expectations and exposure.
