At last, someone gave me an easy way to fingerpick. I had to relearn how to play completely when I had a stroke in 2010. I did alright on the relearn with everything but fingerpicking. Never could get the hang of it with all fingers. So now im gonna try your way for a while, Chuck man. And I like the fact that you play slide with a flat pic too. Thats how I play now. Kudos, brother!!

Tuned to open G and made a slide out of a canning lid and have been messing around for days. Got the blues scale down a little bit but I never knew I only had to press down very lightly. I've been trying to learn guitar since I retired at 60 a few years ago and have progressed to knowing some open Chords by watching KZbin videos. I can even play a tune or two but have always felt there must be more than just playing on the first three frets. It has got a bit boring to be honest. Last night I watched an interview with '' Sea Sick Steve '' who said '' Tune your guitar to find a sound that sounds good to you then just play what you want'' Today I've found this video of yours and BINGO !!! My guitar sounds so much better tuned to '' G '' I can now play what I like just by '' Ear '' and will learn how to play '' Slide ''as well. You Sir are a Genius. Wish I had found you years ago. God Bless you.

One tip - tune the low E string up to G, same as 5th string. The D does not completely work that well as an open tone - this gives you a double-G, nicer heavier bottom, with 2 slightly different pitches. (Why Keith Richard's took off his 6th string). FYI, I play free improv slide, a bit different. I use a 5/8" ( or 17mm) socket, much cheaper than store-bought, or cut off a metal table leg or other tube, or use the top of a wine bottle - several ways to do this.

I've noticed that finger style guitarists, especially in the British Commonwealth, use the term clawhammer to describe a pinching motion that plucks out a melody while picking the bass line with a thumb. What Americans refer to as clawhammer is generally a banjo technique, which can also be applied to the guitar, in which the thumb is bounced on a drone string (or occasionally dropped down to play a melody note) while the other fingers and especially the pointer finger are used with downstrokes to pick out a melody.
@lilchucktheonemanskifflema22143 жыл бұрын
cheers for checking in :), enjoy the music.
@margarethouse404 Жыл бұрын
I'm trying to decode . In the video , what he does is a Pinch . That involves the thumb and a finger being piched together twords each other . Doing a Bass line , or an alternating bass with the thumb , while fingers are doing melody is indeed a thing . But it's physically impossible to do a pinch simultaneously . The thumb is already doing something else . If the fingers are picking two different strings at the same time, that's a Double Stop . Not at the same time is just regular picking .

That tip about slightly muting the strings behind with your ring finger is incredibly helpful

Nice tutorial. I'm a beginner trying to learn slide. I can't seem to find extra large finger picks. The extra large thumb pick seems to be working out ok. I tried to use a hair dryer to form the large sized finger picks, but it still hurts my fingers. I can't find the correct size on amazon. Any suggestions? Please advise.

Thanks Chuck, personally I like my really tight, i guess that are uncomfortable and after a while my fingers turn a funny colour, however, i just kind of got used to it.... I do also dip new ones in boiling water and then they are cool enough to handle i mould them / stretch them a bit... this is not advise - at your own risk. My best advise it to look at either 'acoustic blues pickers' or 'National & resonator guitar enthusiasts' pages on Facebook and as the question there... great forums and you'll get loads of great advice back. More about my music here :) lots of slide and finger picking...www.backyardmusic.co.nz/shop Cheers!

What slide do you recommend that I can get on Amazon? Do you only recommend pinkie for the slide? Steel strings better?

I don't really have any recommendations unfortunately, I know that's not very helpful, but it can be a life long journey finding you 'perfect' slide... it's a very personal thing. weight, thickness, length, glass, brass, steel, then as for strings.... I used the Dunlop brass slide that was about 55mm for years, now I make my own from wine bottles.
