Open Inguinal Hernia Surgery Post Op Day #1

Yesterday I had an open revision of a failed robotically repaired inguinal hernia done last November.. This is my post op day one report. My results may be different from yours.

6:44 Your pain scale on Day 1: 1/10. Mine, after open op, was *10/10* after the local anaesthetic wore off. It didn't get any better on Day 2. On Day 3 it reduced to 6/10. But I should have iced more. Just didn't know how effective icing is. My pain scale didn't reach 1/10 for over a week.

Thank you for your video! I had the open cut hernia operation three weeks ago but when my doctor went in to fix the hernia, she also found a Pantaloon hernia in the same area. Possibly, that is the reason I had much more pain than you in my recovery? The best thing for me was bed rest and as along as I didn't move around, I felt zero pain. Getting out of bed was another story and yes, I was black and blue and tender in the "region" too. I iced my wound for a few days also and that helped the swelling and now there's still some swelling but it goes down every day, albeit, slowly. I have been walking and in fact I got out the first day but I think that my pain-killers helped me a lot with that. The pain was worse on the second and third day but slowly got better. I still have local discomfort and my scar "glue" is still fully intact except on the perimeter edges. One thing I noticed after surgery and still notice is that my left testicle is "lower" than my right when I stand up. Throughout my life, they've both been at the same "distance" but now, the left testicle is about one inch lower than the right. Don't know if that will pull up eventually. One question I didn't ask my own doctor was a sensitive one that I wonder if anyone else experience what I "think" I did during surgery. And that is----I think I had an erection during surgery. And post op, as soon as I was in the recovery room, I was still "halfway there" if you know what I mean. Do you know if that is common during hernia surgery?? I'm not familiar with the possibility of an erection during hernia surgery. But I will tell you that the OR staff see just about everything. The room is extremely professional. Do not be embarrassed. Even if you did by now they have probably all forgotten. I hope you heal up well.

Even male babies get erections. But medical staff are used to just about anything. I'm 78 and I've long since stopped being embarrassed by bodily reactions. And I don't care if it's a female doctor checking my prostate through the rear. I'm past all that. I just want to get well, and believe me, by 78 one tends to have health issues most of the time. Getting old is a right pain in the butt!

Thank you so much for this video. I had a hernia repair (open) 22 years ago, and the post-operative pain was horrific. I had spinal anaesthetic, which completely wore off a few minutes post-surgery. I was also only offered a far weaker pain medication than oxycodone. :( Hope you're fully recovered now!

I agree about the pain. I also had open surgery, and the recovery was excruciating for days.

May I ask what was the type of hernia mesh that was used on the initial procedure?
