I had never gotten over Costner's love affair with himself, miscasting himself in films like Robin Hood(seriously?) A seriously underrated movie. I love this one and also Appaloosa. When I watch this one or Wyatt Earp or Dances with Wolves I can't help but feel Costner was born to play a cowboy in the same was I think Sam Elliot and Tom Selleck were. I feel like if they had all been born thirty years earlier, they all would have had far more successful Hollywood careers for that reason. I'm profoundly sad that the western genre has been largely abandoned.

Doesn’t it show them using more than the one pistol though? I always just assumed he changed weapons after running out of ammo. A little later in the fight, he’s seen only using his rifle, so he must’ve discarded his smaller weapons when he ran out of ammo for them. But before that, I’m sure we see Costner using dual pistols in the fight, so maybe he alternated here or there when he knew he was running out of ammo for one but still had enough in the other.
