Open Readings 2024 - DAY 1 - Prof. Jens Biegert

Jens Biegert received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Würzburg in 1994 and a Master of Science in Physics from the University of New Mexico in 1998. He completed his Ph.D. from the Technical University Munich in 2001. Following the completion of his Ph.D., Jens went on to work as a research professor at the University of New Mexico and as a professor at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO).
Currently, Biegert and his research group at ICFO are focused on utilizing mid-infrared light to capture electrons and determine the precise locations of atoms within a molecule. This groundbreaking approach, coined the “molecular selfie” by Jens, showcases the unprecedented level of control between light and matter. These discoveries have far-reaching implications for fundamental optics, as well as applications in biomedical research, materials science, and chemistry.
Jens Biegert holds a position on the board of directors at OPTICA, and he is recognized as a Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).
