For me Spider-man (PS4) and Just Cause 3. I love the traversal in both games and its something I wish other games focused on.

Something I've learned from bg3 is that I like when the quest marker is just a circle showing me the general area, and that that area is somewhere I haven't been yet, because it's all in shadow.

Damn you tease me the whole video with Outer Wilds music and yet say nothing, im devastated lol. Seriously though enjoyed the video, hope you enjoyed making it!
@DrewSunn

Because Outer Wilds is perfection, all killer zero filler. In reality it's just because Starfield doesn't have any iconic tracks like Outer Wilds does, kind of generic, and they're both space themed so I thought it fit. I haven't played it yet (plan to later this month) so maybe I'll be proven wrong on that.

BG3 actually resolves some of the issues I have with open world games really well! Such as instead of taking away markers as a whole. It rewards you exploring with books or interactions that then set you up to find pieces of treasure or side quests marked on the map. That way it feels natural but also doesnt potentially make me feel like I have to memorize every little detail to know where I am supposed to go. I love it. Great vid! This is a topic I truly think needs more attention since it is my biggest issue with games today!

Starfield, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Fallout New Vegas have "leveled zones" to prevent some of the repetition.
@DrewSunn

I need to make a video about level scaling and how much I hate it one of these days. Regardless, all of the games I mentioned certainly have ways to break up the repetition so you don't notice it happening, but when you eventually do, gee it hurts the experience.
@Mathadar
@Mathadar Жыл бұрын
@@DrewSunn Agreed. Though, all games lie to their players, trying to convince them to spend time on that, instead of real things. It doesn't stop them from being enjoying, but as you said, its when the illusion breaks, and it reminds you that its just a game, and that you should get back to real life stuff that is loses its charm. I dislike level scaling too, and was going to suggest you cover it at some point, as its the lazy way of doing it. I love how Fallout New Vegas does it, as its not level scalingin the typical way, plus it doesn't have the sort of respawning issues that other games do. Its also somewhat linear, but you can explore to your hearts content. Most of its side missions steer you back to main quest lines, which is a great way of both letting you explore, but also reminding you of the big plot casting a shadow over the whole game. The Bear, the Bull in the case of Fallout New Vegas.

I have a love hate for open worlds. I /love/ exploring, I like seeing sights and finding things, and traveling while looking at all the beauty of it, but a lot of times they're very empty. Like repetition can be fine, as long as it's not overused, like with Skyrim. Caves being caves I get that, but at least let the cave generate differently and just put different things in them! I won't mind like 10+ caves as long as they don't turn out the same which I think Minecraft at least does well. Sure the game is built like legos, but it can at least generate differently which does help with exploring (and especially mods for new biomes), and they are bringing more life into it (I remember when the oceans didn't have life, even if coral reefs are still hard to find) [also thanks for pigstep in the background]. I think Scarlet and Violet did alright, it's open world exploration for the most part (with areas blocked off by things that are part of the story, mostly to prevent you from getting in over your head) but the parts you can explore, you can just go for the most part, and the landscape does change and there are Pokémon almost all over the place, with some little things here and there, even just finding trainers in places that aren't just on the side of the path. It may not be the best, but it doesn't feel empty, not like a game where you can travel and you don't even see an animal. Sure like animals would normally avoid a person, but at least let me see them, even if like it's in a distance. Plants are great, but like gimme some funky rocks, let me see some gets, add creatures but not like a couple of creatures (especially for planets like in Starfield) but a lot, give me reptiles and mammals, birds and fish and amphibians, give me insects even if they don't do shit, I just want to see them land on a leaf or fly away, not every creature needs to have a use. Also I do hope you get to Persona 5, I'm very proud of you for being willing to step outside of your comfort zone with games, willing to try something like persona with the hesitancy that you might not enjoy it cause of how many hours it can be of fluff, but also maybe it'll open a whole new world of games that you do enjoy.

12:00 I agree. I say instead of pretty much going 50-50 between the funding of actual development and marketing. Just drop the marketing funding by a lot. Big studios don't even need advertising as people already know about them, give a statement, or post a clip or some notice on your site, maybe give some demo play time to a few youtubers and done. Focus on doing a good job and success. And use that money in the actual development, to make that big game as good as possible. Or just start a different smaller project. Instead of marketing for that big game make another smaller game or a few even. I get that it's not so easy to stray from "the recipe" as it may be a too big of a gamble. But if you make a few games instead of just one you can keep to the script with whatever you feel is biggest but also have another or a few smaller games where you can experiment. Why can't a big AAA studio have their big projects as now but with way less marketing spending. And use that money for small projects to compete with indie games studios? And you know, to elevate the gaming scene as a whole to keep innovating.

I'm not confident in saying I understand anything about video game marketing and the costs of it, I don't even understand KZbin marketing. Hi-Fi Rush was able to survive being shadow dropped, sure, and it worked out really well for them, I'd love to see more examples of this strategy over time as it clearly works (probably because of game pass) but there are also thousands of examples of games being released under everyone's noses, and people not realizing. I was super excited for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, but when it launched last month I had no idea, that was a marketing failure. Perhaps a video for another time.

The Diablo 4 "open world" is the worst I've seen yet. Everyone just does the campaign to level 50 then goes straight to Nightmare Dungeons, which are either circle or figure eight, and have a small number of "objectives". You could probably do an entire video just on the failings of D4.

Bigger caters to more than the linear and conventional gamers. A LOT of us want the option of variety and expanse. Better to have that than not. Anyone complaining that their cake is too big is missing the fact that it just means they have more time to enjoy the cake. I would also like to point out that this balances out crowding that could come from mod authors adding settlements, structures and so on down the road. Always was a problem with the cramped space of fallout and elder scrolls maps. Yes, cramped. I say that as someone who goes into walk mode and travels from city to city on foot.
@DrewSunn

A lot of the time when I'm eating that big cake I notice that all I've been doing for the last four days is eating cake and suddenly I don't feel like eating cake any more. Nothing wrong with massive games existing, I just think it's a balance, one that has been tipped on the side of quantity for much too long.

@@DrewSunn I don't think hard limiting map size would be a good idea though. They're already super tiny. And the cities end up super small so they don't break the illusion that the world space is big. I think that having a more comprehensive "fast travel" system like in Morrowind would go a long way, paired with less time crunch on the devs so they are able to finish the game systems, stories, extra quests and environmental worldbuilding. Not to the point of cluttering everything though, it is important to let wild spaces breathe.

Definitely could be an argument there, but I do agree that Rockstar is pretty good in comparison to other AAA studios when it comes to repetition, which is why I chose to leave them out of the video. At least if we ignore the multiplayer modes. RDR2 is one of my favorite games, but so is Elden Ring so 🤷‍♂️
@somnorila9913
@somnorila9913 Жыл бұрын
12:30 I suppose they do that because it's where they focused in. Like they try and polish parts that will get as many eyes on and ignore secrets parts that very few if any will get to see in their playthrough. Pretty much why games like Elden Ring or Baldur's Gate 3 got so many much praise. Their developers made a game for people to play not something resembling a game for people to buy.

I don't quite understand what you're saying here. 🤔
@somnorila9913
@somnorila9913 Жыл бұрын
@@DrewSunn The attention and polishing is concentrated on the areas people will experience during play. If statistics say most people do not finish a game then most focus will be on the beginning of the game. Games that are truly good and get praise across the board put care and attention to parts that people might not even see. As in treating with same type of polish not just the beaten path but also the areas that you may find out of luck, when you really go out and explore every nook and cranny.

8:04 Not just that alone, creativity as well. As alongside with more demands in lesser time, in a similar fashion of instilling paths and restrictions, creativity is seen as something bad. Just stick to what we know it works and don't stray away from the formula. So when it fails it's a lot more obvious. You sense the under-baked state without any alleviation from interesting workarounds.
