I can only imagine the relief this horse felt after treatment. Yes it's tender and sore till it heals further but when the animal realises the man is tending to his decaying hoof , you can see the animal relaxing into the treatment. The relief it feels must be immense. Thank you for all you are doing to alleviate the suffering of this horse.

when I watch HoofGP, he sprays the hoof with iodine and adds salycilic acid powder and wrapping. Is there no option like that for horses?

We had a pony who had an abscess after laminitis, it was a wet winter, so he was kept in, with a boot and poultice, keeping it clean in a muddy field would have been awful. Blacksmiths are the best people!
@cherylmillard206711 күн бұрын
Blacksmiths work only with metal. A farrier treats horse's hooves and shoes them.

As soon as that abscess opened, the flies just descended in a cloud. Poor thing. Just releasing that pressure must have been such a relief 😮💨 seeing them run together was nice! Thats all they really want, open space to run, no pain and lots of grass and hay. And maybe sneak an apple here and there lol😉

For those who don't know.. this is an ultra kind and gentle animal..lots of horses would have kicked the schit out of him
@anonymoose1168 ай бұрын
Nah. I had one boy that was high strung, fearful, anxious, etc - he didn't kick. Usually what you'll see is them pulling their leg away, not kicking. If kicking is a legitimate concern, you can sedate the horse with ace, give them a bit of Bute (which I'm certain this horse had for that abcess), and the horse would be relaxed and out of pain.
@chapter44448 ай бұрын
I was wondering about that. I know nothing about horses but catching a kick would be bad lol. I think that part is universal
@EstebonSosa7 ай бұрын
You obviously have never been around or owned horses. Even a wild horse knows when its being helped by a trained individual. In trained hands most horses wont kick when handled properly. Facts!

Kaolin poultice and wrapped is what we do after a abcess is relieved. Poultice every day until nothing drains anymore then horse has shoe put back on.
@dexine47238 ай бұрын
Hot salt water poultice is my fix. Works quickly, relieves the pain and you are not left with a gaping hole in the hoof that will end up packed with debris and risk more trouble.

What I would've done after I thought I'd drained all the puss, would've been to have applied a hot bread poultice on it, in a bandage of course, that would stay on til the next day, when it would be changed again. After that, the next gauze bandage would've been soaked in tea tree oil to disinfect it. That too, would've been done twice. Hopefully, after hoofing her, that would eliminate the rest of the toxins and the abscess. That poor mare. But the trick is to keep that hoof insulated from the bacteria-laden ground in a tea tree infused, antiseptic bandage until it's properly healed.

Thanks !
