For a more stable and standalone installation, I recommend openHABian on a Raspberry Pi. It's even simpler than this, because you just copy an image file onto an SD card, pop it into a Raspberry Pi and walk away for an hour - once it stops flashing, the installation is done and OpenHAB is running...openhabian also automatically installs a number of tools that are pretty much required for actually "setting up" the HA system (samba shares, tail logger, SSH consoles, etc..). It's really taken the guesswork out of initial configuration. Also, I recommend the community.openhab.org forum for anyone having issues and not finding help in the documentation. The community there is fantastic, and experts quickly respond to even the most basic questions....

On a PC or Mac, if the terminal window isn't open 24/7, then OH won't work? I see it integrates with IFTTT, what about Stringify? If using a RPi, will anything else be needed to use Z-wave or ZigBee (ie: Z-Stick, etc.)?

While I am a huge home automation nut, think I'll wait another couple of years for this to flesh out. Just the techie language (which Linux pros love so much) and install hassles will scare away n00bs. Looks very promising, though!!

Hi VidoNOLA, you can do it, its not that hard! I have a new video series I have been working on to go step by step on different stages of setting up openHAB with no console or coding needed!

I"ve been doing home automation for 30 years or more. Started out with BSR X10. Not many people I know that do home automation run it on a MAC. Just not the right platform. Therefore don't waste time demo'ing it on a MAC. Most home automation operators use either a Raspberry PI or a dedicated X86 box. So please stick to Raspberry PI setups for future videos as it makes for sense fot those doing actual home automation. Use your MAC as a browser into the Raspberry Pi OpenHab SSH server please.

Thanks for the video, the difficult part of openhab is actually configuring it, setting up rules, switches etc

Hello, I agree with you it is more challenging than say Smartthings when you first start. But, I have found that I hit a wall with Smartthings and can't accomplish what I want. (at this point it (smartthings,vera) actually become more complicated because of the additional steps/tricks etc you need to do)

I’m fixing to build a new home and I would like to automate it. I’m not wanting to use much wireless to do it. I will have a wireless network but for automation I want it wired. But I’m having trouble trying to figure out what bundle of hardware I need for audio distribution, video distribution, security, and touch screens that will all work together with openhab. Where would u recommend I start?
@yoyoTechKnows5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brad, if you can do hardwire, it's always a good option. My 2 cents, run as much cat5/6 cable as you can, and if not run conduit so you can run what you need in the future. I always recommend as big as a conduit as you can from the basement to the attic as its the hardest run in the future. I have used whole home audio systems in the past, but to be honest I would go sonos now. You can even choose to wire to some in wall speakers with the Sonos Amp if you like. The streaming/services are amazing with Sonos and you can go wrong. (Still better if you can wire them, but work well in areas you don't have cat5.) Good luck, have fun and thanks for watching! Don't forget to subscribe!

Since OpenHAB is running on your local network (huge benefit) how do you control your automation when you are off network? Are you using a VPN or is there a web interface?
@yoyoTechKnows7 жыл бұрын
Hi Steven, you can use the remote site myopenhab.org along with the mobile app that works with this. (search openhab in your app store) You can choose what you would like to expose to this site. Also, if you are more concerned about security, you could use a VPN directly to your house, and then connect with the app.

My advice is to create a video that shows the process of actually installing and adding a zigbee USB Dongle and configuring it. There is like no documentation for this. I work with a lot of open source products and it has to be one of the worst solutions. I purchased a USB dongle and the only way I could find any documentation is to search for a forum post which had the same stupid question. How to add the most basic device. Then adding drivers for it took another 15 minutes browsing the web and going through random posts. This product is for those that have absolutely nothing better to do than spending hours upon hours trying to learn it. Like giving someone a back and rather than showing them how to ride it just hand it to them and say go for it.

Interesting! There is nothing that I am aware of, but I imagine it could be done. There is a web service that allows you to synchronize and access your system remotely. Take a look at myopenhab.org for this.

Thanks so much for the great content. In one of your other videos, you use SmartThings together with OpenHAB, which confused me. You paired the Z-Wave devices in SmartThings, then setup some rules in OpenHAB. The reason I'm confused, wouldn't SmartThings and OpenHAB overlap, and OpenHAB is redundant? For example, isn't the typical method of using OpenHAB wih Z-Wave, having a Z-Wave USB-controller managed directly by OpenHAB (considering Z-Wave can only have one "master" controller). Can you explain the key benefit of an ST+OH solution, versus the use of just one of those solutions alone? Even better, if you could go into a little more detail on the division-of-labor between the two solutions, in conjunction with one of your Z-Wave/Smart Device setups, that would be awesome. Thanks again!
@yoyoTechKnows7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rusten, yes I was simply showing that the sensors worked equally well in both systems. In my opinion openhab can do everything Smartthings can, and then more. That being said I do still run both, but not much is done in Smartthings anymore, and the stuff that is could be moved to openhab. Glad you like the videos!
@InspiredScience7 жыл бұрын
@yoyoTech, thank you for the clarification, that makes perfect sense. Could you clarify, based on this updated information - are you running a Z-Wave USB Stick (Aeon, Vizion, Sigma?) direcly on your OpenHAB box, and in your updated system you would typically pair in OpenHAB rather than SmartThings? Or are you still using SmartThings essentially as a networked Z-Wave adapter pass-through, of sorts? One of the reasons I'm curious, SmartThings appears to have such a large variety of preconfigured devices as a result of community involvement; however, I didn't notice this in OpenHAB. I am not experienced with OpenHAB, however, which is the reason I'm interested in your opinion. Also, if you take requests, a second video on configuring OpenHAB to either pair and serve as a master Z-Wave controller (along with an initial device/rule setup) would be awesome and very unique, I haven't found this elsewhere. Alternatively, if you're using OpenHAB to control ST and not a USB stick, that would also be a great video, either way. Thanks again!
@yoyoTechKnows7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rusten, I am running openHAB with a USB Aeon Aeotec Z-Wave Stick (link in the description) directly on my openHAB computer which is actually and old repurposed mac laptop. The basic setup with of this literally takes about 5 minutes - download openHAB, install the z-wave binding (one click) and start adding devices. I still have Smartthings around, and it is a nice product, but I just find when ever I use Smartthings I get to a point that I just can't do what I want to do! openHAB is easy to setup, and if you want to go deeper, it can pretty much do anything you want to. I will look into making some more zwave videos, I have had a bunch of requests.
@InspiredScience7 жыл бұрын
Excellent. So you don't run into problems with Z-Wave devices without profiles in OpenHAB? Or would it be more accurate to say that it's very easy to create a device profile in OpenHAB, making it a non-issue? I suppose it's easier than I'm making it out to be; however, I've been using Homeseer for 10+ years. Homeseer has a preset profile for just about everything I've paired with 50-something devices. With OpenHAB being so extensible, I'd like to make the switch; however, I have trepidation in moving such a large setup, considering the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" mantra .

alain valdes actually I ended up getting it working. I uninstalled Zulu completely. Then tried to install orracle Java. This still didn't work and gave me the same error. Then installed Oracle developers account and that worked. That's all I had to do though. No idea why this worked but found it on the forum somewhere from another guy there.

Hi There, I get so many mixed comments about music, some people like it, some don't! I run openHAB on a raspberry pi as well, its a great option but I had old mac's lying around so they make sense. I also run a number of other things on the mac that would overpower the raspberry pi. The great thing is openHAB is so versatile and runs on almost anything! Thanks for watching!
