I just finished redoing a 1979 Checkmate. I cut the back part of the cap just like ya’ll. When I put it back I reinforced up underneath and it went back just fine. But, boy, did I get a bunch of grief from everyone on the Checkmate forum. I really enjoy ya’ll’s videos.

I want to start by saying I have to blame you for my next 12-16 months of itchiness and cursing fits! I just picked up a Mako 18 to rebuild. told myself after the last 4 I rebuilt I wasnt going to do it again... you have inspired me to a year of suffering lmao! I needed a little puddle jumper to chase the Redfish around the flats in my area ( Hernando Beach crystal river area)
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating 4 ай бұрын
Sorry not sorry! We can suffer together!😂🤣 it’ll be worth it in the end. At least that’s what I tell myself! We needed a puddle jumper as well. Something we could just get up and go with. 18 mako is perfect for that! Send us some pics of your project we’d love to see it! Good luck brother! 🤙🌊🛥️

@@perfectfitboating There's a couple in your area for around 600 bucks. they arent Makos but there are some cobia skiffs and a C hawk. My ideal would have been the Aquasport flatback 222 but people want an arm and a leg for them just for the shell

I’ve seen them on marketplace. We might pull the trigger on a seacraft sceptre if all goes well. Gonna try and see it this week. Full restore with a pilot house build. It never ends!

I feel your pain. Many years ago I tore down a speed boat that I got for a real good deal. Many many hours and pains later I got it back together. Truth be told I had more money in the rebuilding than what I could have bought a decent ready to use boat.. Keep the faith.

I LOVE the OLD small hulls. 15 to 17 run-a-bout. Before floatation and multiple additional compartments. A friend took the entire cap off of his 15 Glastron to redo transom, stringers and floors. Being able to remove the cap and gut the whole boat made the restoration so much easier and more complete. I've heard some say to stay away from marine grade plywood when rebuilding the structural elements of a boat. Something about the chemicals used prevents good adhesion when laminating the boards in. They feel that a better bond between the wood and the fiberglass is more important than the water resistance of the wood you are using as core material. Have you heard this or seen it to be true. What type of wood do you use when using wooden members ?
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating 2 ай бұрын
I haven’t heard of that. But, I know Grady switched from regular marine plywood to a treated marine plywood after 99 but I don’t know if it’s because of what you speak of. Either way we will be using composites for this build.🛥️🌊🤙

Verified by the fact I kept saying “f&$king boats “ and “f$&king foam” throughout the vid. lol. In all seriousness though, This boat is going to be badass when you’re done! keep on keeping on! Cheers

That boat belongs to my dad’s friend. Someone gave it to him as form of payment for a job. It’s got twin outboard merc 250 efi on an aluminum bracket. At first glance, it looks like a great project. Upon further inspection, it was a hurricane boat from last year and the entire floor in the cabin along with the stringers are soaked. I’m trying to convince my dad’s friend to part it out and give us the trailer! 🤙🌊🛥️

Bad transom just = more content! Seriously, 90% of boats in the world have wet transoms. Unless they're made out of plastic or are less than 5 years old, they're all rotten. Have you considered, since this is a much smaller transom, cutting the old one off and making the new one out of coosa and new fiberglass? Looks like you could probably get by with 2 sheets of coosa. That way you *know* it's done right, rather than a repair job of pouring a new transom.
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating 4 ай бұрын
Hey Elle! Yep! More content = more itching 🤣. At this point I’ve come to the conclusion that any boat with an original wood transom has some water in it. It’s inevitable. Scuppers crack, thruhulls leak etc. It’s gonna happen. This transom is so small, one sheet of 3/4” k cell (composite board) will be enough to get two pieces sandwiched together. The worst part of doing this is ripping off the wood that’s already there because it hasn’t rotted yet and is just wet. I’ll be comparing the different ways to go about this and what the most efficient way is! 🤙🌊🛥️
@ElleDelSol

@@perfectfitboating I'm not sure of the strength comparison between coosa and kcell or divinicell, but I can tell you from experience, coosa is super easy to work with.
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating 4 ай бұрын
@ElleDelSol k cell is the same as coosa. It’s just a different brand name. Divinicell is the foam board. Good for floors and some structural parts but not so much for transoms.
