Replace the plastic thru hulls. My 1984 Grady 22 seafarer has 6 cracked ones, they are trash and start to become brittle in the sun. Just paid 800 to swap them out

First video of yours, that I have seen. I am a boat mechanic, and you are not really going against the grain here. you are just following your dream. All boat owners should do that. I have a few questions. What are you replacing the transom with? It should be strong. Are you redoing all the wiring? Are you doing a moisture test on the stringers? (Even the foam soaks up water!) Adwises few I have. ( I got Yoda'ed!) Overkill on the wire gauge. You'd never want them to small. ((FIRE)) Allways have an extra bilgepump!! (Mounted an extra in my Windy and it has it own battery!) Consider a bigger center window that opens, and stairs that folds away. It will make your life easier when docking. A folding sunbed in the back, and a Bimini top with the pilot house would look great. Look to campers and caravans for idears in the kitchen and toilet area. Looking forward to the next video.

Hey brother thank you so much for the comment. It’s great to get advice from people like yourself who have extensive knowledge in the marine industry. The transom I’ll be replacing with coosa and a poured transom. My channel is partners with FGCI and they provide the materials for the build. I’ve done two transoms this way and they’ve come out amazing. I’ll be rewiring the entire boat. I did this to my Grady and another Grady as well. I’ll definitely be doing overkill on the wire gauges! These stringers are foam filled so I’ll have to make some inspection holes to see if they’re dry or not. If they’re not, I’ll dig them out and repour some two part floatation foam. Extra bilge pumps are a must! I’ll be making another video with my ideas for the rest of the build so I can get more valuable input like yours. Bimini too that folds up would be amazing for the Rear deck area! I think it’ll be a sweet build! 🤙🛥️🌊

Great infor, greatly appreciated...quick question is there really a big difference between composite and fiberglass boats?
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating Күн бұрын
I can see how that’s a little confusing. All these boats are fiberglass but some use wood in the construction while others use composite materials like coosa board for example. The difference would be price. Wood is cheaper to use than composite. 🌊🛥️🤙

Good info for boat shoppers!!! I rigged at a shop for years up until 2020 and it really has gone down hill from all aspects. Cheaper everything form latches to finish. We actually had Seafox and what a terrible boat, the ride was pitiful and fit and finish the same. The only good thing was they are light so they are fast'ish. We had a lot of brands from the entry level SeaFox to more expensive Southport and Black Jack. Of all of them for me the best bang for your buck was a Key West. Foam filled hull which is for the unsinkable part but also makes the hull quieter and vibrate less in bigger waves or 1 foot chop. Their center consoles and bay boats are good values.

One design defect that was common in your video was batteries in the bilge. Also, servicing them in 90degree weather is pure misery because the 50-lb battery has to be lifted out of its hole. I look for batteries installed away from the bilge and accessible. Lose your battery, lose your motor and bilge pumps.

@ that’s where the batteries are in my present boats. Years ago, I used my father’s boat. Unfortunately, the hose gave way and was allowing water into the hull. I didn’t notice the bilge pumps running more often. The battery, located in the bilge, got drained, so I took it out to charge it. When I came back the boat was essentially sunk saved only by the flotation. I couldn’t put the battery back in to run the bilge pumps without actually holding it above the bilge. I swore I would never own a boat with batteries in the bilge.

@Norm100ful scary situation. It only happens once though lol
@Norm100ful
@Norm100ful 2 күн бұрын
Good points. However, you only touched on a few of the mfg defects. Like an iceberg, 90% probably can’t be observed. I looked at off-shore boats. One had a ball valve to prevent sinking if the hose blew that was blocked from closing.
@perfectfitboating
@perfectfitboating Күн бұрын
Imagine what we couldn’t see. Did you catch the deck drains not plumbed and draining to the bilge? 🌊🛥️🤙
@Norm100ful

@ That is an Everglades 24 with open-gutter, scuppers from the deck through the bilge through the transom. The outlet is below the water line. Expensive boat that dumps deck water into the bilge, but also lets seawater in through the transom. Can’t believe any one would buy that design - death trap (as it was for three baseball players in bad weather in the Gulf.) Shearwater finally installed bilge pumps in the”castnet box” that’s below deck. No scupper in the boat. Well, not quite-there was a floating ball drain that let water in more than out, so I plugged it. I had to make my own pump since my older model didn’t have the pump and it came in handy when I forgot the castnet box drain plug.

Bayliner by name Binliner by nature. I used to be a dealer in Western Australia and also had the misfortune to be an Etec dealer. Everything seems to be put together by idiots no matter what industry or the corporations knowingly sell poor performing junk. I used to field calls from irate customers who had to put up with motors that constantly broke down even on a Sunday.

I bought a new center console Stingray right before Covid. Practically everything you pointed out was in that boat. Bad caulk, unfinished fiberglass, electrical issues, and broken hinges. The trolling motor wires were too short and the radio didn’t work due to a bad ground wire. I am a handy guy and just kept fixing stuff over 4 years before I sold it (no local dealer). Never should have sold my 2006 ranger. Frustrating.

Man this is going to be quite the project! Will be following your progress and chiming in if I can help. Going to be very interesting seeing that hull as a pilot house style boat. There are a few of these boats running around up here in the mid-Atlantic area. My buddy had a 78 that he had for several years and it was restored by a guy up in New Jersey. He loved it. I think the fuel tanks were epoxy coated aluminum from Sea Craft. Hope your going to make accommodations for the “boss” to go camping too. You could make the left cabin area extend out under a footrest for the passenger side seating area. Person could place legs into this area and still maybe get sleeping area down below for 1 person.
