the HD 8 means its 8 inch screen the HD 10 is a 10 inch screen. its not based on age the only dif would be the 16gb or 32 gb. and price will be different

Why would Amazon think it is acceptable to sell Echo stuff to resellers having cancelled them and stopped them working I can just about understand them not wanting individuals to sell them on but this big box is from Amazon themselves and they are factory sealed which would make you think they would work- sounds like a rip off
