My husband worked with a fellow who repaired drycleaning equipment.They had to change to more eco-friendly chemicals a lot of the cheaper guys in our area quit.Not affordable for them to change.

I have a few suits (retired now) and I've always just washed them on cold/delicate. Even put them in the dryer on whatever cooler low setting it is. Never an issue. None were wool though as I don't like it. Same with shirts that say dry clean only. Never an issue.

OMG I cannot believe you haven’t heard of Dryel. It’s available at Walmart and Amazon. It’s a kit to do dry cleaning at home.

Many manufacturers mark all their clothing dry clean only to protect themselves from returns. If the garment falls apart they can say, did you launder it or dry clean it. Look at the composition of the fabric and check how that fabric should be laundered then do it yourself. I hand laundered many silk, linen, and rayon/viscose blouses, dresses, slacks, and skirts with Wool-ite, hung dry, then ironed. Suit jackets and coats, dry clean. If this is too much hassle, then the choices are dry cleaning expense, or just wear yoga tops and pants, jeans and t-shirts.

Was about to say the same, I have gotten so many bargains like cheap real velvet curtains, and expensive clothing second hand that says they need dry cleaning, that's why they are so cheap. Dry cleaning in uk as been expensive for always.Put them in the washer on the proper setting, rinse and spin cycle, hang dry, jobs done. Also if natural fiber and horrible colour I'll also machine dye them, just turned some salmon pink velvet curtains into deep purple, gorgeous. 😁

I know that the wool industry has worked hard to develop wool clothing that is washable. So there is an option when looking for wool clothing. I wash my silk shirts with my regular laundry and they come out fine. I have looked to see if they were hand wash only or dry clean only.

Walmart has a dry cleaning kit that's how I clean my son's suits....it works great and it's around $15

In the UK you're looking at 4/5x that cost for dry cleaning, they hit you for using nasty chemicals, although there isn't a dry cleaner in my town anymore. They're heavily discouraged by all the net zero/green meanies.

You used to be able to get a kit that allowed you to do your dry cleaning at home. Special bag and it worked for shirts and dresses. I don't know if you can get it now, I'm retired now. 😊

Last yesr I took a cotton T-shirt dress to the cleaners. I dripped water on it and it made a ring so ... The bill was $35! I bought the dress on sale and paid $21 for it. It is hanging in a closet, not being worn. To me, THAT was price gouging.

The way they make clothes nowadays don't require dry cleaning, it's just people certain people require it, to get something delicate just do it by hand it's no big deal, and I don't believe there's that many dry cleaning places anymore they have a different way of doing that, 🤔
