The march of people to Beethoven's Ode to Joy & whose native origins were from throughout the world was a moving sight. Then capping that off with a round of "Reach Out & Touch Someone's Hand" was imho one of the most fitting moments in Olympic history.

Wow, I’ve been looking for the past few decades for a clean feed of the opening ceremonies. I was in the parade of nations for Switzerland and didn’t see much of Switzerland in the US broadcast. In this version, I saw Switzerland numerous times and myself two times! Thank you so much for this video. It brings back a flood of memories! I hope one day ABC uses the original tapes to create a full video but this one is invaluable.

@@nelimaretic8677 technically yes and no. Tito was a disciple of the USSR system, but maintained a level of independence. But the applause for Yugoslavia was because they had just hosted the '84 games, a relatively poor country that pulled that off.

@@eddiemag1799 Tito was never a disciple of the USSR systems, and basically giving the 🖕 to Stalin in 1948. Tito had different plans regarding socialism and it was fine while he was alive. He was balancing between the West and the East. And when it comes down to Iron Curtain, Yugoslavia was free. People were able to travel, borders were open, you could do whatever you want it to do. p.s. Yugoslavia died with Tito and that's the truth. Greetings from Split, ex-Yugoslavia, generation of 1963.… 🌹😉😁

Yugoslavia - what a name! It's like music to my ears. When I hear "Yugoslavia," I can't help but think of excellence and extraordinary athletes. I mean, the Yugoslavs were killing it in every sport imaginable. It's like they were born to win! The legacy they left behind is just mind-blowing. Did you know that even in 2024, Yugoslavia still holds the most world championship titles in Basketball? That's some serious domination right there! And to think that they're still holding onto those world championship titles after all these years - now that's what I call staying power! So, next time you hear the word "Yugoslavia," remember the powerhouse of sports it once was. Those athletes were true icons, setting records that still stand today. It's a name that will forever be synonymous with greatness in the world of sports.

They didn't show how Rafer Johnson on the commercial feed back in 1984. I always wondered how he got down from that precarious platform without having to slide on his butt until seeing this feed. Riding the contraption as the whole thing descends must have been scary but I whole lot more dignified.

29:14 I’m Romanian but the moment where the people were applauding the Romanian delegate has a pertinent reason: during the communist period, the socialist nations from Eastern Europe has boycotted the OG 1984, as a response of US’ boycott from OG in 1980. And of course, Romania hasn’t accepted this thing 😊, and we have participated

I'm from Poland. This Olympics was really great. It is a pity that there were no athletes from my homeland. But it happened because the communist politicians decided for them to boycott the Olympics in Los Angeles, thus depriving them of the chance to experience the most beautiful moment in their lives and the chance for Olympic medals. In those days, Poland was in the grip of communism and had to dance as her big brother called the Soviet Union played. Besides, this boycott was really a retaliation for the previous boycott of the Moscow Olympics by most Western countries.

4 wks since your comment, let me add that the sociopolitical scene in the US (the world too) is increasingly mean & toxic. Corrupt, greedy & unscrupulous too. Some of the goodwill & cultural-political normalcy of the US in 1984 & even 1984's new-entry People's Republic of China (still emerging after decades of the particular misery & inhumanity of Maoism, therefore a bit less ideological) has evaporated over the past 40 yrs.

@@irenemirela Besides Romania, several other 'communist' or socialist countries sent their delegations to the 1984 Summer Olympics, including the parade of nations in the opening ceremony at the LA Memorial Coliseum: the People's Republic of China (competing for the first time alongside Taiwan or the Republic of China, the latter taking part under the moniker "Chinese Taipei"), Benin, Congo-Brazzaville, Somalia (who'd been at odds with the Soviet Union since the Ogaden War), Mozambique, and Romania's very own south-western neighbour, Yugoslavia 🙂

The proscribed words of the International Olympic Committee, which go back decades, are exactly the way that Reagan read them. However, he flipped the ending part of the paragraph to make its predicate stronger. The conventional format is: "I declare open the Olympics games of [name of host city], celebrating the [either 'st, 'nd, 'rd, 'th] Olympiad of the modern era."
