I was not alive that time, but these 3 minutes seem to give a perfect overview of this era. still one of the best openings of any movie!

One of the best beginnings of a movie. Shows how the U.S. isn't the country we used to be and shows how we are not the best anymore until miracle happened and revived us. When college kids with little experience destroy soviet grown men who are trained just to play hockey for the rest of there life who only demand victory is amazing. They won because they learned to respect and win for the name on the front, not the name on the back.

It's kinda funny how Canada beat the Soviets 8 years before this lol
@Enrahb4 жыл бұрын
We were so beat down at this point. People forgot to love the country. “Crisis of Confidence” was spot-on. When I was a little kid, before I learned about this, I couldn’t understand what was so important about the Olympics, or this particular year’s. Once I learned I understood. When this movie came out, long after I understood, this opening sent chills up my spine. It still does to this day. So few movies based on real events to justice to the event. This is still my favorite.

@@bradwhitsitt241 Canadian professionals (stars from the NHL and WHA) beat the Soviets over an 8 game series in 1972. While some of these American players went on to play in the NHL, when this game was played in 1980 they were merely college kids. Less than a year earlier in 1979, this Soviet team beat the NHL All-Stars 6-0. Less than 2 weeks before this game, these two teams played an exhibition at Madison Square Garden and the Soviets won 10-3. For these and many other reasons, this remains the greatest upset in major sports history.
@bpeezy22544 жыл бұрын
@@bradwhitsitt241 You're right, the cream usually rises to the top in a series as opposed to a one-off. The '72 Summit Series was the first "best on best" competition between the Soviets and the West and the Canadians winning was definitely an accomplishment. Herb Brooks said himself that if these Soviet and American teams played each other 10 times, the Soviets might win 9. But that's part of the beauty and mystique of this game - there was only one chance to pull off the upset. The 1977-1980 Soviet team was arguably the best hockey team ever assembled and most had been playing together for the better part of a decade. The American team had been playing together for a little over 6 months. Most of them either never made the NHL or had short, unremarkable careers. They were simply not the same class of team. The Patriots beating anyone in a Super Bowl does not really count as an upset for me (they were actually favored in that game over the Falcons) and the 2016 Cubs had one of the highest payrolls in baseball. These are professionals playing professionals. I think a closer allegory in recent memory would be Iceland advancing to the knockout rounds in Euro 2016. I believe when they beat England, there were more registered professional players in England than there were people in all of Iceland. That said, Paul Henderson!

What this intro shows us is how the American citizens have realized that most people have woken up from the American Dream and those people have taken it hard. With the early 70s being the peak of the Postwar Period (The Anti-War protest of the Vietnam War, The U.S. Invasion of Cambodia, and the Women's Liberation protests), that was where a lot of people stopped believing in the government (Dick Nixon's involvement in the Watergate Scandal, the Soviets displaying their arsenal at their 100th mayday parade, NASA's Apollo program shutting down, and Gerald Ford's methods for beating inflation), both the people and the economy turned on each other (Niagara Falls chemical leakage, the Three-Mile Island nuclear meltdown, and the 1974 oil crisis), and America started turning to commerce and consumerism to get by (Speculation on what the silicon chip would do for the future, Saturday Night Live, Disco nights on the dance floor, America's Bicentennial Celebration, the Magnavox Odyssey, and the Billy Beer). The biggest foreshadowing towards the dark times the main characters (And the U.S.) were facing was the Olympic basketball game between Team USA and Team USSR. While there were some dark moments from the opening montage such as Elvis Presley dying in Tennessee, the Kent State University shooting, the Vietnam War, the gas rates overwhelming gas stations all over the country, and even the overall Cold War, the darkest was the aforementioned basketball game between USA and USSR. That part of the opening intro goes to show that the movie isn't just about one of the greatest hockey games of all time, or even just the huge political power struggle that both aforementioned countries had dealt with for 45 years, but about a moment in that piece of history where America had truly felt like it did before we the people had let the American Dream and the Postwar Period get to our heads.

@@bizzy24100 Completely agree. The trajectory of the US completely turned around in the early 1980s as compared to the mid to late 1970s. The American collegians re-affirmed to the nation at large what is possible with teamwork, devotion, discipline, and determination.

I agree, historically that was a dark time. But people act like the last 40 years has been so great. In instances it was. But even now, 2022 there may be peace for the most part. A country who is trillions and debt and will continue to be until the day they hit the coffin. House prices so astronomically out of reach 35 years of age is the minimum age you can afford a house assuming you’ve worked all that time. People trying to becomes more educated just to be saddled with tens of thousands of debt for a piece of paper that is becoming more obsolete by the day. Which about only 30% of adults in the US have at least some college to bachelors degree. Costs of living sky rocketing, the wealthy evidently light years away and well off than almost everyone. So I ask you and for thought what is different today than then? We have peace for the most part yes? But what about everything else? Not even a smidge and that was 40 some odd years ago the next 40 one can only hope we all get by

This movie did make this intro seem rather too busy, with both the cast and crew names, and the historical events surrounding the 70s and such, but in the end, they all shaped America and the world to be what it was, before the 80s came around. I know I wasn't around in the 70s, but I know America was still in a great deal of peril, when it came to politics, finances, wars, scandals, and even certain crimes that came through.
