Keep in mind, GRRM has stated that Sothoryos was created while he was filling in gaps in the world when creating the Maps book in 2008. So unless something changes, I wouldn't put much stock in Sothoryos playing much of a role, if any, in the main series. I could see him possibly doing some side stories in the future there, but I think he'd be more apt to do stories in the lands of YiTi, which are a little bit more fleshed out. Sothoryos, as of right now, seems like it's just a map-filler to bring more wonder to the world, and nothing more.

Yes Brandon, quite so. And looking at the larger map of the world, the names of places sometimes become homages to inspirations of GRRM. Kad'ath, and so on. A HP Lovecraft reference. Sothoryos itself has in it's spelling just the old pulp magazine influence and inspiration GRRM loved, as we all do. But the stories of those lands are, well, another story. GRRM is placing his story in the lands he's defined. The lands beyond, well, sure there could be stories. But those stories wouldn't be A Song of Ice and Fire. But hey, don't let that stop you! :)

"Sothoryos, as of right now, seems like it's just a map-filler to bring more wonder to the world, and nothing more." And boy, how much did it succeed at that! The parts describing it in TWOIAF were my favorite in the entire Song of Ice and Fire book series.

The 1st plane to fly around the earth flew for nine days with about 120 miles per hour. Now even if we say the dragon was about half that speed and only flew 4-5 hours each day, how friggin big must that planet be for it not to even reach the other end of a single continent. She returned after 3 years so its safe to assume she flew into one direction for one and a half years. That would very roughly be around 500 days. Lets say she flew 4 hours a day at 60 miles per hour. That would be 4*60*500= 120000. She flew 120000 miles. Earth equator is 25000 miles about 1/5 that distance. Considering how well though through everything in Martin's writing is I can only explain this with its Martin's way of saying women cant drive.

I think dragons can fly for much more time, they even flyed from Valirya to Dragonstone island, which means several weeks without landing. And, i think she just lied, because the air of Sothorious is toxicue for normal people from known world. So, there is two options - maybe she just lied and spent 3 years in some city, or she flyed for 3 years without landing.
@fabian19398 жыл бұрын
If history teached us something, people like to hyperbole, even in fantasy "history". She probably flew south for a couple of days, found some handsome idigenous guy, broke up with him 3 years later and returned to Valyria. After being asked what took her so long, she was embarassed because she "tainted" her bloodline by mating with someone not from her family and not even a nobleman from another family, so she told them she flew straight for 3 years.
@fabian19398 жыл бұрын
Karl Toth First, you can't walk 24h a day, only so much, which was taken into the calculation by Kalenz. So if you take like 4 hours per day (probably more possible, but you will also be slower due to the difficult terrain) you have about 504 miles, which aren't as far away from the real alps as the 3 years flying probably is from the size of sythoros.

Agreed, Especially given huge stone cities with multi-storied monuments - completely abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. Mayan inspiration. Maybe mixed in with some Africa too given its location and slave trade. I wonder if you sail west of the Iron Islands, do you eventually find Northamericos? And does the first westerosi to do so think it's Asshai? Or does Essos actually wrap right around?

There is a BIG part of me that wants to see what is lurking south of essos but there is also a part of me that reaally doesnt feel like exploring it. like cmon if what the girl with the dragon said was true and she flew for 3 yrs and westeros was just a tiny portion of the world wont that get too messy for our heads. WORSE wont that mean that the whitewalkers or Khaleesi's powers have no meaning in the undiscovered world. Like are her dragons just ants compared to the beasts south of essos, it just scares me knowing that the book of ice and fire is just a sentence in the book of the whole world

consider the fact that the Robert Silverburg's series concerning the planet Majipoor is also quite a bit larger than Earth, as much as ten times the diameter of our world... living on such a large planet does present more than a few problems such as having a light internal core, meaning the planet would be poor in metals even if it did have what would be considered a near normal gravity. i do not see Planetos being visualized as being that big at least currently....it could in fact be just a bit smaller than earth maybe around 88% the mass of earth according to some ponderings of readers or the rabid hardcore fans...more maps and reliable stories of exploration are needed to confirm or debunk many theories
@scottmantooth87858 жыл бұрын
it does seem to be an odd mix of technologies for such a setting...although the inclusion or dependence on magic might infer a primitive or superstitious projection of a more subtle technology based on biological processes... the fact that the the timeline goes back for so many thousands of years with very little advancement in these civilizations to me indicates that they are being intentionally being steered from the means that would vastly improve their existence and knowledge of their world

I believe the ASOIAF world is FAR bigger than we realize mainly because in GOT the farther south you go the hotter it gets which would mean getting closer to the equator which would mean an entirely other hemisphere. I believe that the know world of GOT is roughly 1/4 of the world being one side of the norther half of planetos. We know that there must be space including lands or at least oceans that are east of essos and west of westeros. I feel that the scale can roughly be represented by thinking of westeros as Europe and Essos as the about the size of Russia but more south

As a non-book-reader, and someone who just completed his second watch of GoT (and got sooo much more from it this second time 'round), I LOVE the map. The notion of these unexplored, ancient continents with unreal megafauna and flora is just so, so cool. Yet, it's most cool in the way that old sailors' maps are so cool-left to myth and whispers. I don't think full exposition and exploration would be fulfilling. It has to stay half a mystery, at least in my estimation. Great video! I'm a subscriber, for sure. Love it!

I personally think Asshai and the Shadowlands are much more relevant to the current story, plus the Farthest East in general is just so ridiculously crazy and fantastical that not mining it for stories would just be criminal. I'd definitely want to read more about the Corpse City of Stygai, the Vale of Shadows, the Ash river which looks black by day but glows a pale green at night, fabled Yi Ti and the land of Leng, the Five Forts, the Dry Deep, endless plains where only ghost grass grows, the City of K'Dath by the Grey Waste and the Mountains of the Morn.

The whole point of Sothoryos is "There be Monsters". That is to say it is supposed to be fantastical and not understood, the same way maps were made and tales were told in ancient times before the world was understood. Though there likely actually are monsters in Sothoryos in this case, there is no way that any author could actually represent it accurately without disappointing the reader. Just as the Clone Wars sounded so cool to us as kids before the Star Wars prequels came out, but then those grandiose stories we imagined in our minds were ruined when it just turned out to be a bunch of dumb clones that looked like knockoff Storm Troopers, and most of the war was bland and nonsensical. Sothoryos, the wastes to the East, and other parts of Planetos that are only talked about vaguely are exciting and interesting only because we cannot and should not ever know the actual reality of them. This is classic storytelling in the Lovecraftian style, which is to only imply or allude to details and specifics, while actually leaving most of the storytelling to the audience's imagination. It works because our imaginations are vague, and much more grand and interesting than it could ever be once codified into text or images. A world of horrors and monsters becomes much more mundane once you realize that John Doe lives there, eats there, shits there, and survives against those monsters and horrors on a daily basis. By necessity it becomes normalized and natural, rather than horrific and unnatural. So no, Sothoryos should not be written about by GRRM or anyone else, unless George has a really good idea for it, because I trust his judgement.

What about Ulthos
@theethanchung7 жыл бұрын
Ok some analysis and thoughts after watching the new trailer a couple of times: I think the mysterious landmass is Ulthos. Knowing the show runners are pretty devious in dropping subtle hints from very early on in the show about the asoiaf world, it's very interesting to see how the map of Westeros is for the first time depicted rather realistically in the show. @0:21 The region in the North right above Blazewater Bay, from the Stony Shore to Sea Dragon point appears joined to an unfinished landmass in the map. This is very intriguing piece of information as it coincides with what was implied in the books that Planetos is actually round, can this unfinished landmass be part of the Lands of Always Winter or even the mysterious Ulthos (far to the extreme east of Essos) which is mostly unknown except that it is covered in dense jungle - similar to the dense jungle of Wolfswood in the North? Can this mean that Essos and Westeros are possibly (once) connected but identical to the breaking of the arm of Dorne, suffered receding coastal lines from rising sea levels. And that the travel dist between these two continents is actually much closer than expected. Winter is coming, and would this geographical revelation provide a hint towards the direction of the wars to come in both the show and the books? Would Danerys come across this map after conquering King's Landing and realising that she is able to fulfill Quaithe's prophecies for her to travel to the mysterious Asshai and finding out the origins of her dragon eggs? And perhaps finding a solution for the impending doom that is the whitewalkers and the Long Night.

They were probably binge watching your videos and didn't want to sit through it each time - but as a fan that watches daily I enjoy it. Keep up the great work and don't change a thing! :-)

I was just thinking about something, remember when Arya said she wanted to see what was west of Westeros? I think that is going to play a big part in season 7 or maybe even season 8.

She isn't much of a sailor. If Euron Greyjoy doesn't know what's out there not many others could even get a sniff. House Farwynd are some odd Ironborn who claim to have been out there.

Trigerman333 I think she may go exploring after the events of the series, if she survives.

That's what I was thinking about. I'm surprised he didn't mention it.

what do you know about it? there's not a whole lot of information out there.

Mitch Hop I know, that's why I asked what he thinks is over there.

the full world map has been my obsession as of late. While i don't think it would do any good for the story to bring the current characters of GRRMs stories to Sothyros or Ulthos, or even any further into Essos, I do hope that after Martin is done, he will allow other authors to tell stories in his world of Planetos.

it obviously represents africa. or a combination of south america/africa.

Scott Glennon ooh there is plenty of monsters and strange species in africa...
@dr.embersfield15518 жыл бұрын
I would really incline to South America rather than Africa. Because of the jungles and the ancient mayan-looking civilizations.

so the "dragons" are already wyverns but there are even more wyvern wyverns?

@DanielPCline7 жыл бұрын
The dragons in GOT are Wyrvens, or more correctly the Wyrvens in GOT are Wyrvens. dragons have 4 legs and wings . Wyrvens have 2 legs and wingarms
@lurkenskanal4057 жыл бұрын
no, dragons don´t exist so they have as many legs as their creator wish, there are no rules to define how many legs a dragon must have
@MikeTall887 жыл бұрын
Oh, you define the name of these creatures in this universe?:p Then I'll add, the children of the forest are actually elvs.
@thatelmoguy19116 жыл бұрын
you're technically right, but ASOIAF lore states that the wyverns of Westeros are different than those in the uncharted world. I think the main difference is fire breathing. The wyverns outside of GOT don't breathe fire, ice, etc.

Congrats on 100G subscribers!! An anime style with great artwork would be cool too!! I think they would be able to do more with the story and not limit to what people and CGI are capable of. also because I enjoy fantasy anime lol
