An opening day walk around the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.
I walk through the midway past numerous rides, games and food stalls and eventually find my way into the Food Building. This was the first CNE since 2019.
Recorded in 4K at 60 FPS on Friday, August 19, 2022.

CNE was a family tradition when I was young. We would get a free admission voucher from school. Times have changed though. No more free samples or 25-cent bowl of Lancia pasta, LOL - I miss the good old days 💁‍♀️ Thanks for the tour, Johnny.

Aww The CNE. The unofficial end of Summer We used to keep a family boat at Ontario Place. We’d walk over the bridge to CNE. We’d go to the food building and the building with all the world place.s. With goods I think the international building Went to a few concerts. At Exhibition stadium I’m like you Johnny. I used to love the rides. But They make me sick now I remember a ride. The polar bear express they played loud music with the music of the day And say. Do you wanna go faster I’d play the games too Great Memories. Thanks for the tour. Lisa

@Ken’s PAD I remember they were some of the most fun adventures I had growing up. That was such a beautiful time with my parents at the Ex. It was a joyful experience but now? The only good thing was there was an amazing Heart cover band. I stood there and enjoyed the exceptionally talented band! And then the best part of day was going home. I actually had to meditate walking through these crowds. It’s only way I could handle it.

Thanks for the tour Johnny. I greatly enjoyed it!!! Yesterday I had said to my wife they need to do a walking tour of the CNE and today I decided to check, and lo and behold... Food and rides/games seems the major attraction now. I haven't been there in some 40 years. I always loved the food building when I was young. They actually gave out samples. When I went in my 20s, I found a booth that had the best peameal sandwiches on earth. I once went just to eat some of them. The booth was at a corner of the building, off the beaten path. Those were the days of the automobile. The new models were all on display, and all the companies gave out free hi gloss brochures of each car. We would go home with a shopping bag full. The shopping bag was free as well as logoed yardsticks and book covers and I can't remember what all else was FREE! In the Better Living Center, they would be selling appliances like sewing machines and showing off new appliances, etc. Do they still have the Agricultural or horse buildings? The signage was a lot more subdued back then. It wasn't all in your face and bright! But it was always crowded and it didn't start as early in August as now. The entrance fee certainly wasn't $25.00 though. It brought back many memories... Thanks again Johnny!

I believe I got barred from more games than anyone else alive. Snooker on a pool table, darts, putting, rolling a bowling ball. I was healthy before April 1997 and a former 6 time world pinball champion. I told them back when they actually had a pinball arcade (before Johnny's time) at the CNE if there was gambling on pinball I'd own the keys to the exhibition. Then there was just two pinball machines at the Carlsberg Pavilion.

The colours of the CNE are different now. It is all aqua and magenta. The CNE now lacks the greasy, long-hair guys who used to run the rides. For example, the Polar Bear Express used to play heavy Metal (Ozzy Osborne "Crazy Train"). I figure that is why Conklin lost the contract. It is more "family friendly" now. But the loss of the sleaze was matched by rising prices. I have photos of myself at the CNE from 1974 as a child. I didn't notice the dirt and sleazy bits. But I know even kids like me who lived in Regent Park could afford to go.

I used to love going to the CNE as a kid. Back when I was really young there was a parking lot on Queens Quay near the Fleet street. We would drive down in our blue 1987 Honda Civic and park around there, then walk over to the gates. Later when they got rid of the parking lot we parked near Bathurst and King and took the street car down. My top memories of the CNE involve the first time I had a ham and swiss subway kids sandwich that came on a round bun, and the first time I tried Clearly Canadian sparkling water. Once when I was 6 years old I went into a phone booth while walking with my family and they didn't notice that I was stuck inside. My mom was panicking and eventually a police officer brought me back to them. Good times!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and observations about the CNE's return in Toronto, Canada. It's a lot of stuff to digest (pun intended)! Aside from the food and shopping at the CNE, my favourite part is the commute to/from the CNE is by GO Train (aside from the TTC). In case you didn't know, there's a hotel situated within the CNE grounds called "Hotel X". Although I haven't stayed at that hotel, I sometimes get something refreshing at Starbucks (at the Hotel X site) - that's something that I had discovered back during the 2019 edition of the CNE. Talk about convenience if you ask!

Rigged my arse, the pool tables were warped but everyone knew it so you just pumped the balls in. The golf balls were buggered they were two piece balls back when I putted. You had to put the ball square on the ground where the two piece ball went together. The darts were house darts made of plastic put I practiced for about 100,000 hours with plastic darts. I was a world class snooker player and world class darts player. I putted on the Professional Putters Association. Was a former two time world youth mini-putt champion. Nothing was rigged when I played them. I didn't get barred from everything because they were rigged but because I won everytime.😁

Some are rigged by simple physics. The one with the ball on a string where you have to hit the back of the bottle will go on the other side of the bottle. I think the ones where there is a pole with a plastic ring on the end of a stick and you have to lift a beer bottle isn't rigged. Watch them do it then wat h the people. The people don't even come close to matching the needed technique.

The old girl is past her prime. $28 to enter the grounds .$15 for a funnel cake? $39 for a frickin' pizza? $10 for one play of Whack-A-Mole? $7-8 per ride. How does a middle class family not burn $300 for the day? Fire Hall closes at 4pm. Better Living Building is a casino. Queen Elizabeth Building was closed. Not the CNE of my childhood. Even the iconic Alpine Way has been 'pussified' to half the height and half the distance it used to be. Sad.

Long lines, rigged games, high prices. Why on earth would anyone want to waste time there? I used to go with my mom when I was a kid. There were many interesting exhibits of technology companies, airshows (with one crash), and even a P-51 Mustang firing at a barge in the lake. Very loud. We took home many brochures and trinkets. All free. I don't remember any rides or games. It sure has changed. Even in my small town of Midland (16,000 people), we have three carnivals each summer. I won't bother with CNE ever again.

What isn't nowadays. It would cost as much as an MLB or NHL game with food & drinks.

I went to Ex yesterday and hated every minute of it. The noise pollution was just deafening. The ear piercing screams from some of the rides. I had to press my thumbs right into my ears. My husband is handicapped. The ppl cutting him off and walking too close. I got so angry. Do ppl lack the respect for ppl in these situations. Then the food building was so hot. It made sick to watch these fat/obese ppl in their walkers and scooters stuffing their face. I couldn’t even eat anything. This place has changed too much for me to enjoy myself. I don’t think we’ll go back for a long time. This was just too much.
