Only recently discovered this... Can't wait for the 4k release. Gene not playing his usual kind of role but is absolutely captivating. Shout out to Cazale, wish we had more time with him.

Such a brilliant intro to a film, such a powerful establishing shot where your mind is in a race against itself to figure out who you're supposed to be looking at. The mime is probably one of the nicest touches I've ever seen in a scene, good enough to turn it into one of the strongest film openings to me. The cheerful big band jazz juxtaposed with this tense, unclear atmosphere is such a powerful thing. Coppola is a damn genius.

@locksh.. Very nice observation. Excellent comment. Thank you so much.. It's 3 o'clock in the morning here in Vegas. I've had a few drinks and remembered this movie. I came looking in the comments for something.. Something deep. And you sir, nailed it on the head. Thank you so much.

Although uncredited on the print because Mr. Coppola subsequently terminated him during production, this brilliant title sequence, among several others in the body of the film, was shot by Haskell Wexler.

The shock at the end when the endlessly replayed "He'd KILL us if got the chance" becomes "He'd kill US if he got the chance," after the audio if finally cleaned up enough.

At the same time this opening scene was being filmed a young man on the other side of the world was doing street performing in France, Philippe Petite. Just like the mime in this movie, he did all kinds of street performing. Exactly one year later on the morning of August 7, 1974 he would be walking on a tight rope across the towers at the top of the World Trade Center buildings and go down in history as the only person to do so..

The incomparable Robert Shields. This film is so damn good and such an amazing time capsule.

Nice touch, adding Robert Shields the mime to the scene. Makes the scene far more active/interesting.

una metáfora inquietante e intensa sobre el poder y la intimidad. Una obra maestra más del gran Coppola.

I wonder who's in that park these days. How many shoppers. How many musicians, mimes. How many non-homeless.
